Spring 2024 Shiitake Mushroom Harvest
Shiitake mushroom harvest in early May in a Laurentian location. These are basically rescue mushroom logs that weren't producing after they were initially inoculated 3 years ago - stacked on our city property. Out of desperation, I moved the logs up north in the Laurentians at a family property, and the Shiitake fruited last Spring, and now this May too. Never say never!

#Short Water Level For Mapping Out Contour Lines
EMAIL: landwithpierre@gmail.com
Mapping out contour lines on the land. I made this water level tool in only a few hours and it works like a charm. Easy to build. Kudos to Seb for helping out and explaining how we arrive at obtaining the desired contour level.

Planting Black Currant Cuttings
EMAIL: landwithpierre@gmail.com
Planting Black Currant Cuttings. After cuttings were harvested from from black currant shrub stems & planted into pots, the cuttings were then transplanted a few months later into a temporary nursery bed, where the cuttings will Winter over until the following Spring. The goal is to nurse the cuttings until they reach the size of a small shrub for future use in other planting situations (e.g. for planting in fruit tree guilds or any other landscape and garden situation).

A Walk in the Park
EMAIL: landwithpierre@gmail.com
I discuss the transition from a former Permaculture services company partnership I was involved with, leading into my current Permaculture services project. As I walk through a very interesting and wonderful public park space, I reflect on the various situations, challenges and realities that eventually lead to the transition from the former partnership to the new project I've recently launched. It's all about learning from past experiences (positive and negative) and building upon those experiences to forge ahead with newly acquired wisdom and confidence. This is a longer form video of approximately 20 minutes; and I hope that some of the issues I brought forward here, resonate with experiences you may have encountered, and that in the very least can serve as wisdom for some of you who are thinking about entering a business partnership (no matter what type of business it is) or are involved in one already.
Cheers,
Pierre

#shorts Haskap Hedge
EMAIL: landwithpierre@gmail.com
Haskap Hedge. Mixing 2 varieties for cross-pollinization: Berry blue and Indigo in this situation. Why not stack functions by planting berry shrubs to create a screen or hedge. Haskap (or Honeyberry) make perfect hedges and are easy to trim and maintain. Haskap shrubs happen to also be deep proof. So, quite an added element to add to your planting arsenal.

FALL GOJI BERRY HARVEST!
EMAIL: info@pierreduranleau.com
Harvesting some Goji berries from one of my garden beds in an urban space. Remember, some Goji shrub stems have small soft thornes - so pay attention! The smaller green berries aren't ripe (of course), the orange color ones aren't quite ready to pick, but the plump red ones are. Enjoy your harvests!

Fall Garlic Planting

Fall Garlic Planting in an Urban Situation.
If you're located in a temperate zone, North of the equator, this is the season for planting your garlic cloves (late Sept. to early Nov.). After having planted some garlic cloves North of here in the Laurentians last week (as a zone 2-4 deer repellent experiment), I planted 200 cloves on a plot situated at our city residence this weekend (zone 4-5).
Here are the names of the varieties I planted:
Brenda, Georgia Fire, Musique & Romanian Red

American Cranberry
EMAIL: info@pierreduranleau.com
I discovered a wonderful patch of young American Cranberry shrubs during a stroll in a local urban nature park (west-end of Montreal, Canada). The location is unofficially known as the 'Turcot Yards Nature Park' (or 'Nature Corridor'). American Cranberry (Latin: Viburnum Opulus & V. Trilobum) should be part of any farmer's, off-grider's, landscaper's and gardener's plant repertoire. Classic and great berry shrub that is used either as a keynote species and/or integrated with other permaculture style orchard and/or edible planting guilds. The American Cranberry fruit is traditionally used in making jams and jellies.
Cheers, Pierre.

#shorts Goji Berries part 1
EMAIL: landwithpierre@gmail.com
Goji Berry. Getting excited about harvesting some Goji Berries very soon. The ripening of the Goji fruit happens in October around these parts in the North-East. So, a few weeks still left to go. One interesting aspect of Goji shrubs I discovered, is the vine-like habit the stems display when the shrub grows near a fence and other plants. Quite an adaptable plant and easy-to-grow fruit shrub that can be integrated to any fruit guild planting scheme.

Nature Park Wet Zone

Focusing on 4 specific plant species identified during a stroll in a local urban nature park (west end of Montreal, Canada). The location is unofficially known as the 'Turcot Yards Nature Park' (or 'Nature Corridor'). I focus on 4 wet zone plants and shrubs that are of use in a wet zone landscape regeneration and/or rehabilitation situation. These species and where they grow and thrive should be part of any farmer's, off-grider's, landscaper's and gardener's plant tool box. Classic and great species that are used as a solution to mitigate and control wet and humid problem areas on your property.
Plant list: Sandbar Willow, Cattail, Canadian Elderberry and Red Twig Dogwood.
Cheers, Pierre.
