We deserved it": France fans lament after losing World Cup final to Argentina
France fans said they were "disappointed" as they left Lusail Stadium in Qatari capital of Doha on Sunday after watching their team get beaten 4-2 by Argentina in an extraordinary World Cup final.
“We deserved to win, we don’t like Argentinas,” one fan said while waving the French flag. "Messi got the World Cup he wanted, I don't want to say I'm happy for him but very good journey for him," another said.
French President Emmanuel Macron comforted Didier Deschamps' squad at the locker room of Lusail stadium. He said he shared in the sadness of French people, and that they should "remain proud of this team."
In Paris, dismayed French soccer fans hoping to celebrate on the Champs Elysees avenue instead headed home in disappointment, after Argentina snatched a penalty shootout victory in Sunday's World Cup final.
Some accepted the results, despite feeling sad that after a match that was all Argentina for the first 80 minutes before a Kylian Mbappe-led comeback left the French thinking they might steal an unlikely win.
