But for Peter Obi, the North would have retained power after Buhari - Gov Wike
But for Peter Obi, the North would have retained power after Buhari - Gov Wike.
Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike has described the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, as the hero of the 2023 presidential election.
Governor Wike said the decision of Peter Obi to contest the presidential election under the platform of the Labour Party, primarily prevented the north from retaining power after the end of President Muhammadu Buhari's tenure.
The Rivers State governor said this during an interactive meeting with the Technical Dealers Association of Nigeria, Computer Dealers Association, Garrison Phone Dealers Association and Building Materials Traders Association in Port Harcourt on Saturday, March 11.
Governor Wike explained that contrary to insinuation that he did not support Peter Obi, what most people failed to realize is that the Labour Party presidential candidate remains his hero of the election.
"Obi is my hero. If Obi did not contest, power would have gone back to the North. The whole of South -South and South-East that PDP lost, if Obi did not contest PDP would have won.
The hero is this election is Obi whether you like it or not. I am not here to please you, Obi is the hero. He may not have been pronounced as the winner, no problem, the law will take its course. If Obi did not run this election, power would have remained in the North. Whether he declared a winner now or not, history will be on his side that he fought and fought well."
Wike said the reason he did not publicly declare support for any presidential candidate was because the PDP G-5 governors had unanimously agreed to ensure the emergence of a president from southern Nigeria to succeed President Buhari.
Governor Wike, said while members of the G-5 governors assiduously worked for power to return to the South, the likes of former Rivers State governor and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, mobilised votes for Atiku Abubakar.
"If Amaechi loves the Igbos, why did he not support Obi? Instead, he supported Atiku. He did not want power to return to the South because he lost APC ticket."he said

Missing 8-year-old who vanished from US in 2018 found alive and well in Mexico by FBI agents
Missing 8-year-old who vanished from US in 2018 found alive and well in Mexico by FBI agents.
An eight-year-old girl who went missing in 2018 has been found in Mexico, theFBIsaid on Wednesday, March 8.
Aranza Maria Ochoa Lopez waskidnappedat age four by her biological mother from Vancouver, in theUSstate of Washington.
"For more than four years, the FBI and our partners did not give up on Aranza," Richard A. Collodi, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Seattle field office said.
Aranza has now been returned to the States and the FBI will continue to support the child as she settles back into American life.
"Our concern now will be supporting Aranza as she begins her reintegration into the US," Collodi added.
Aranza had a supervised visit with her biological mother on October 25, 2018, the day she was taken from a shopping mall in Vancouver, Washington.
During the visit, Lopez's mother, Esmeralda Lopez-Lopez, asked to take her child to the toilet, according to local publicationThe Columbian.
Lopez-Lopez then fled with her daughter and left the scene in a stolen vehicle with an accomplice.
Aranza had been in foster care following reports that her mum had abused her.
Lopez-Lopez was arrested in September 2019 in Puebla, Mexico, following the incident, and pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping and robbery and first-degree custodial interference in 2021, landing her a 20-month prison sentence.
But throughout the entire ordeal, Aranza was never found.
When she was taken the FBI determined she had been taken to Mexico and offered a $10k (£8.37k) reward for information leading to the recovery of the little girl.
She was safely recovered by Mexican authorities in February 2023 in Michoacán, a state in western Mexico. FBI special agents took Lopez back to the US after she was found.
Officials have yet to reveal further details on her discovery, including how she was tracked down and who the child was with when she was found.
