A Solar Eclipse and an Oncoming Gale | Ep. 258
Well I had hoped to sail direct to the Chesapeake Bay from Florida, but an approaching cold front is forecast to usher in gale conditions around Cape Hatteras, so Beaufort it will be. Otherwise it's pleasant sailing as I work my way north, following the Gulf Stream, and I have perfect weather to view the solar eclipse of April 7, 2024.

Handling a Gaff Rig (UPDATED) | Ep. 257
Some years ago I cut a video on handling the gaff rig and it became one of my most popular videos. Questions about the gaff rig appear in the comments section and in my email on a regular basis. Since the original video was somewhat crude I though it time for an update.

Season's End ... Already? | Ep. 256
I make it as far south as Boca Grande Key, also known as the Philosopher's Sandbar, and indeed I find myself working on another essay. But I also have plans to make it back to the Canadian Maritimes this summer, which means that it's already time to go, time to begin my journey back north.

Is the Sunshine State Throwing Shade on Cruisers? | Ep. 255
I make my way to Key West, Florida. I notice that shore access is getting rather more tricky if you are not at a marina. When I applied for a dinghy pass at Marathon they would not issue the pass until they checked that my USCG documentation was legit. Evidently the authorities are cracking down on cruisers, but to what end?

Arrive in Florida, discover a new anchorage | Ep. 253
The wind falls flat calm while I enter the Old Florida Channel. Fortunately the flooding current assists my labors with the sculling oar and takes me straight to the anchorage off of Key Biscayne. Nice. I drop anchor just before midnight, completing the passage from Bermuda in thirteen days. Following a few weeks of rest I am then headed southwest to the Florida Keys.

The Weather Models are Fighting Again | Ep. 251
I take in the Code 0 despite the light conditions as the GFS weather model is showing what looks like a gust front approaching. The ECMWF however shows a much more benign frontal passage. Soon I will find out. I conclude the video with a short memorial for my father.

From Where No Traveler Returns | Ep. 250
Mixed but generally improving sailing conditions have me well on my way to the Berry Islands, Bahamas, where I will most likely anchor while I wait for favorable winds to cross the Gulf Stream to Florida. So all is well at sea, except that I receive word that my father is in critical condition and has been moved into hospice care.

North Atlantic Won't Play Nice | Ep. 249
Sailing out through the Town Cut (to St. Georges, Bermuda) is generally more difficult than sailing in. This is because any wave action from outside will be pushing you into St. Georges. Though I have tacked in through the Cut, I've never attempted to tack out, always opting to wait for a fair wind. This time it seemed like I had a fair wind, but turned out to be a rather tricky operation nonetheless. But once out, the weather maps promised fair weather sailing for the next week. Well, as the saying goes, forecasts are what you expect, weather is what you get ...

Mid-Ocean Metropolis | Ep. 248
With boat chores completed I hop on the bus to Hamilton for some sightseeing. It's quite amazing to be walking the streets of a small but modern city sitting atop a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. I'm soon called back by that Atlantic ocean, however, by an approaching southeasterly gale which has me running for shelter.

You--Still--Don't Need an Engine to Go World Cruising | Ep. 247
A fairly mild tempest besets me on the final night of this passage to Bermuda. A night however that is moonless and black as coal and leaves me with several electronic glitches the following morning. Mischievous devils of the Bermuda Triangle, perhaps? I clear with Bermuda Radio to enter the Town Cut into St. Georges. Bermuda is one place many would say requires a reliable auxiliary to transit. I'm here to prove otherwise, and I got the video to prove it.

Departing in a Winter Gale is Fun (not!) | Ep. 246
It is difficult to find a fair weather window that will stay open long enough to sail to Bermuda from the US East Coast in the late fall. Your prospects tend to worsen the longer you wait. Typically you will end up departing on the tail end of a strong cold front, ride it to the Gulf Stream, and then hope for moderate west to southwest winds to get you the rest of the way to Bermuda before the next big system runs you down.

Bermuda Bound | Ep. 245
I will hunker down in Hadleys Harbor while another screamin' nor' easter blows through New England. Then it's on to Vineyard Haven for provisions and water. I discover that I have ice in my jerry cans due to overnight temperatures dropping well below freezing. I review the weather maps as my departure time nears.

Winter Closing In | Ep. 244
A calm morning just outside the Great Round Shoal channel becomes a brisk slog down Nantucket Sound to Vineyard Haven. There I conclude my two and a half day passage from Maine, combating the cold with a roaring fire in the Dickinson heater and a hot meal on the stove. Ah, contentment. I shall enjoy some late fall (November) cruising on Buzzards Bay while searching for a weather window to jump to Bermuda.

There's a Certain Zen to It | Ep. 234
Fast sailing from Nova Scotia abruptly slows as I approach Quahog Bay, in Harpswell, Maine. Then the breeze dies altogether and I am obliged to use my sculling to cover last quarter mile to the anchorage. I visit with my father, who lives there, and provision for the next southbound hop to Cape Cod. I depart Maine in sparkling clear weather but temperatures are now dropping below freezing in the early morning.

Nova Scotia Gives Me a Blustery Send Off | Ep. 242
Two months ago I arrived in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Now in late October it is past time to depart for warmer waters, but fair weather sailing conditions are becoming increasingly elusive. Originally bound for Cape Cod, I compromise and head for Maine, a shorter run that gives me a better wind angle. The passage starts off nice enough, but just south of Cape Sable the winds pipe up and I'm getting into a nasty chop amplified by the strong tidal currents.

Late Season Snowbirds | Ep. 241
Brrrr! The Dickinson heater is becoming a necessity. Departed Lunenberg on what looked like a fast reach to Carters Beach. Ha! Wind backed westerly turning it into a tough windward slog, delaying my arrival until well after dark. But at least I had fair winds for the next leg to Shelburne, where my Nova Scotia cruise began back in August. Those fair winds, however, came with steady rain and drizzle.

A Tightrope Without a Net | Ep. 240
I hunker down from Tropical Storm Philippe in Mark's Cove, in the lovely Ship Harbor, Nova Scotia. Brilliant sunny weather soon returns, but fair winds, even in October, are hard to come by. Returning southwest along the Nova Scotia Atlantic coast one encounters persistent headwinds. The sailor has to pick his windows.

Paradise Leased | Ep. 239
Idyllic coastline continues to stretch out before me as I move northeast toward Cape Breton. However, the weather is now turning noticeably cooler, now in early October. Then tropical storm Philippe emerges from the steamy tropics and, like Hurricane Lee before, is now on a direct course for the Canadian maritimes. I take that as the signal that my lease on paradise is up for this season. It is time to begin my journey south. But first I have to find a place to shelter from the storm.

Contrarian Cruising | Ep. 238
Call me Wrong Way Harry. I see few other cruising boats around, and the ones I do are all headed south while I am still sailing north. Can't blame them. It's almost October and it's getting chilly in these parts. But I did not sail all the way to Nova Scotia just to turn around and go home.

Rovers and Rogues Descend on Halifax | Ep. 237
Lock up your daughters. I, Alan (from Sailing Wave Rover), and friends are on the loose in downtown Halifax to cause mayhem. Crisp, cool, autumn weather has arrived, and a few days later Alan hoists the tanbark junk sail on Wave Rover II and heads south toward Cape Cod. Though it is late in the season, I continue on northeast along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, still holding out some hope of making it to the Bras d'Or Lakes.

In Halifax I meet up with Alan from Sailing Wave Rover, who has just begun his own voyage with his newly constructed Wave Rover II.

Tall Ships Passing | Ep. 233
After spending the night in a near perfect anchorage near Covey Island, I arrive at the storied seaport town of Lunenberg, Nova Scotia. The Bluenose II is docked downtown and free to visit, an offer I can't refuse. I also pay the small fee and visit the amazing fisheries museum there.
