Photographing Anglesey's Hidden Gems Capel Lligwy The 12th century saw the cessation of Viking raids on Anglesey and, as a result, increasing prosperity and stability. At this time many of the old Celtic churches, originally built with timber, were replaced by stone buildings. Hen Capel Lligwy (Old Lligwy Chapel) is one of these. The Din Lligwy Hut Circle is an excellent example of a fortified hut group, dating from the latter days of the Roman occupation. Coins and pottery found here have been dated from the 4th century AD, although excavations and finds of earlier structures suggest that it was in use long before that. It is thought that the wall was built around the village at this time; the decline in the might of the Romans towards the end of their occupation meant that raids against villages became more commonplace. Can You Photograph In The Middle Of A Summer's Day part 2 A little below the Snowdon Mountain Railway’s Hebron station are the remains of Capel Hebron, where residents of this valley worshipped before the area was depopulated. Calvinist Methodists erected Capel Hebron in 1833 and improved it 1859 and 1871. The chapel, c.275 metres (900ft) above sea level, seated up to 120 people. It was the valley’s only communal building. Slate quarrying, farming and tourism dominated the local economy in Victorian times, and many families moved to the growing village of Llanberis. Changes to farming practices in the 20th century further depleted Cwm Brwynog’s population, and Capel Hebron closed in 1958. The final service was held outside – because the key to the chapel was missing! Abandoned Through Time part 2 The ruin of Fferm Cwm-uchaf Farm Cwm-uchaf (upper cwm) was the highest habitation in Cwm Ty-Du. The ruin is connected to the Llanberis-Waunfawr 'road' by a green lane, though in the vicinity of the ruin the track is muddy and wet. Abandoned Through Time Garret refers to the highest area of Dinorwic Quarry, which runs to nearly 2000 feet high. The highest house on the Ordnance Survey plan of 1891 was Tan y Garnedd, but by 1914 its name had changed to Tan-y-Garret. The farmer who used to own this land, who bought it from the Vaynol estate when it was dissolved in 1947 for a nominal price, was very particular about his ownership and put up various signs (whitewash on slate naturally) stating no road, no entry, etc, which is technically correct, even now this is not land subject to right to roam legislation. A few of these houses were still inhabited after 1947, so that planning consent isn’t needed for them to be resuscitated. Landscape Photography...Merlin's Pool According to legend King Vortigern wanted to build a castle on top of Dinas Emrys, but every night his castle walls would fall down. Merlin (the wizard) claimed there were two dragons fighting beneath the hill that caused the walls to fall. Therefore Vortigern and his men dug into the mountain and released two dragons. The red and white dragon fought, eventually the white dragon fled and the red dragon returned to his lair. Vortigern’s castle was built and named Dinas Emrys in honour of Myrddin Emrys (Merlin), and the red dragon has been celebrated ever since.
