Mastering Your Emotions: Relational Wisdom from the Book of Proverbs
Mastering Your Emotions: Relational Wisdom from the Book of Proverbs
James Long, Jr.
Message Exposition
1. Clarity: Understanding our Emotions
Eight Basic Observations about Emotions
• Emotions are built into all people in all cultures by God’s design (Psalm 32:11)
• Emotions are complex and involve our whole being (Exodus 32:19; 2 Samuel 18:33; Mark 1:41)
• Emotions drive some of our most noble and constructive behaviors (Exodus 2:5-6; Daniel 1:9)
• Emotions can also drive some of our most regrettable and destructive behaviors (Genesis 37:11; Acts 7:54)
• Emotions are not inherently sinful (John 8:29)
• Human emotions are often twisted by sin.
• We have hope for change. Through the gospel, God has redeemed us from the curse of sin (Ezekiel 36:26; Romans 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 5:17)
The key steps in redeeming and controlling our emotions are:
• To bring them to God in humility, faith, and prayer
• To examine them in the light of God’s truth
• To ask Him for the grace, wisdom, and strength we need to harness the power of our emotions so that their ultimate impact is to move us to love the Lord with all our hearts and to love our neighbor as ourselves.
2. Capsized by Out-of-Control Emotions
3. Controlling and Mastering Our Emotions (READ Acrostic)
There is hope. With practice, these six essential skills can become habits…
• God-awareness – Remember (Proverbs 9:10)
• God-engagement – Faithfulness (Proverbs 3:5-6)
• Self-awareness – Humility (Proverbs 22:4)
• Self-engagement – Discipline (Proverbs 10:17; 12:1)
• Other-awareness – Compassion (Proverbs 3:3-13)
• Other-engagement – Service (Proverbs 19:17)
READ
Recognize our emotions
Evaluate the source

4. Conquering Ungodly Emotions
• Instead of Sinful Anger…Patience and Kindness (Proverbs 14:30; 19:11; 29:22)
• Instead of Pride…Humility and Honesty (Proverbs 3:7; 18:12; 26:12)
• Instead of Unforgiveness and Bitterness…Forgiveness and Freedom (Proverbs 24:17 and 31:6)
• Instead of Depression…Hope and Joy (Proverbs 12:25-28; 15:13)
• Instead of Fear, Anxiety, and Worry…Love and Trust (Proverbs 12:25; 14:10; 18:14)
Three Necessary Attitudes and Action to Conquer Ungodly Emotions
• Honest self-evaluation
• Confession and repentance
• Learn the biblical process
5. Cultivating Godly Emotions
• Renewing our minds
• Worship
• Preaching
• Faith-building relationships
• Word and Prayer
• Reading, Meditating, and Imagination
Questions to Ponder
• What am I feeling? What are my moods and attitudes? Recognize your emotions (Psalm 42:5; Matthew 14:30; Philippians 4:6)
• Why am I feeling this way? Evaluate their sources (Psalm 73:2-3; Proverbs 20:5; James 1:13-15)
• What will happen if I give into these emotions? Anticipate the consequences of following them Proverbs 15:18; 22:3; Colossians 3:5-6)
• How can I redirect my emotions to express them in godly ways? Direct them on a constructive course (Proverbs 15:1; 25:15; John 12:27; Colossians 3:12-13)

Revelation 1 - Comfort in Tribulation: A Vision of Christ
Revelation 1:9-20: Comfort in Tribulation: The Vision of the Glorious Christ
www.jameslongjr.com
The church in John’s time was facing severe persecution. Almost everyone in the Christian faith was under some type of persecution either socially, politically, or economically. Some were being killed for their faith. John was exiled to the island of Patmos because he continued to preach the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
He is writing this letter to encourage those facing persecution to stand firm in their faith, to have courage amid the trial, and to exalt the person and work of Christ. The Lord Jesus comes to John to give him a revelation of Himself that will bolster John during his own persecutions.
Jesus is the sovereign one. He is speaking through the apostle John to encourage the churches to remember His deep love and compassion for them. The Lord Jesus Christ also encourages the Christian church to continue to live holy in an ungodly world.
In this message from Revelation 1:9–20, listen as James speaks about the comfort we can have in our trials by getting a vision of the risen and glorified Christ.

Counseling through the Psalms: Psalm 77 - Coming Out of Despair
Have you ever struggled with depression, despair, or discontentment? At those times, does your faith in God give you hope and help? Do you find confort in the principles and promises from the Word of God?
"In Psalm 77 this honest poet of Israel is remembering the past. His memories are troubling. He has a long historical memory, and he remembers how graciously God used to deal with his people, and with himself as well. He remembers how God cared for him, how he fulfilled his promises and showed him mercy. He even remembers how he used to sing about God during the long hours of the night. But there has not been any mercy for a long time now, at least so far as he can see. God seems to have rejected both him and his people, and the rejection is so complete that it looks as though it is going to go on forever. When he compares his life in the present with the past, his memories of the past drag him down, depress him, and keep him from being comforted" (Boice, J. M.).

Counseling from the Psalms: Psalm 76 - The God who is Known and Near
It is not always possible to find a reason for the psalms being placed where they are in the Psalter, but in this case, Psalm 76 follows the last psalm nicely. In fact, there are links between Psalms 74, 75, and 76. Psalm 74 looks at the violence and injustice that are in the world and asks the Lord to intervene. In Psalm 75 God speaks to say that in “the appointed time” he will act both to strike down the arrogant and to lift up the meek and afflicted. Psalm 76 celebrates a dramatic incident in which God did exactly that, utterly destroying Israel’s enemies. In all three psalms, God is viewed as the Judge before whom everyone must one day stand and with whom all must eventually come to terms (James Montgomery Boice)
In this study, hear another exposition in our Counseling from the Psalms series, from Psalm 76.
Be blessed.

Reasons the Resurrection of Jesus is Essential
Christians around the world celebrate a risen savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. But have you ever considered the reasons the resurrection of Jesus is essential?
Why does a risen Christ matter to Christianity? Did Jesus give any certainty to his resurrection? What kind of comfort can we find from the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ?
Many people today think the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is crazy, and they don’t believe it makes any sense. They may believe in the human Jesus, who died on the cross, but they cannot comprehend how He is the resurrected and reigning Lord of all.
Other people are confused. They have a sense of aspects of Jesus’s life and ministry. They have heard of His resurrection, but they do not understand why that makes a difference.
Finally, some are convinced that Jesus has risen from the grave, that He has ascended to the Father, and is soon to come back as Lord and judge. And this brings them a great sense of comfort and peace.
No matter where you are on the journey, this message will give you ample reasons that the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is essential.
Be blessed.
OUTLINE: Reasons the Resurrection of Jesus is Essential (John 11:25; Luke 24:36-48)
Reasons the Resurrection of Jesus is Essential
• The Rationale of the Resurrection (John 11:25-26)
• The Result of the Resurrection (Luke 24:36-48)
• The Reasons the Resurrection is Essential
• What is your response to the Risen Christ?

Counseling through the Psalms: Psalm 75 - The God of Justice
As the psalmist looks at the chaos and confusion of the world, he reminds himself that God is the final judge. Eventually, those that have exalted themselves will be humbled. When prideful and wicked people attack us and threaten our security, we can trust that God is in absolute and total control and will ultimately judge and destroy them.
Where do you place your focus when things are breaking down around you? Do you find yourself overwhelmed with despair and discouragement, or do you find yourself giving thanks to God, being assured by His promises, and responding in faith?

Counseling through the Psalms: Psalm 74 - Praying in Painful Times
Psalm 74 occurs likely after Jerusalem’s fall and 586 BC. For years, God had warned His people that they needed to turn away from their sin and turn to Him, and God had sent prophets to urge His people to turn back to Him.
The people turned a deaf ear to God. Because of their sin and rebellion, God allowed the Babylonians under King Nebuchadnezzar to take the city of Jerusalem.
If you read 2 Kings 25:8–15, you will read of the city’s destruction and the temple.
If you have not lived in a war-torn area, it is hard to imagine what the nation of Israel must have felt. Think about this: God’s people and the city of God have been ravaged and ransacked. The walls have been torn down, and the temple has been desecrated. The temple was the place of God’s presence. Now the people of God have been taken away in bondage and slavery. It appears the presence of God is gone from their midst.
The psalmist shares his fears and grief with God. Psalm 74 is a psalm of lament. The psalmist requests God and pleads with Him to remember His covenant with His people.
But seemingly out of nowhere, the psalmist’s mood turns. He begins to reflect on God’s protection of His people in the past and His promises to rescue His people in the future.
He remembers who God is and what God has done. He ends the song by asking God to rescue his people and remember His promises.

Psalm 73: “I Don’t Get It”: Learning Contentment in Discouraging Times
Do you find yourself feeling discouraged and sad about things that are happening in the world around you? Those who seem to be living ungodly lives seem to prosper, while the godly seem to be struggling.
Life seems upside down at times. Sometimes life just doesn’t seem to make sense.
In Psalm 73, the psalmist, Asaph, speaks about the temporary prosperity of the wicked as compared to the lasting rewards of the righteous. In the psalm, we find out that we should live holy lives and trust God for our future reward.
In the psalm, Asaph arrives at accurate perspectives on the world by voicing his complaints to God. Asaph shows believers how to express doubts, questions, or anger to God, and the goodness of God makes it safe to do so.

Ministry Focus in One Sentence: Philosophy of Biblical Counseling
Have you ever been asked to create a value or mission statement? For those of us in ministry, we are often asked to supply a philosophy of ministry or perhaps a philosophy of counseling.
About a year ago, I had a friend ask me if I could boil my ministry focus down into one sentence. He asked if I could talk about ministry and why I do what I do and what I do with people, and I can boil it down to one sentence.
Well, very honestly, when asked me, I really thought it would be easy. I thought this would be a piece of cake to boil it down, but it really wasn't easy at all. It took me a couple of weeks to really hone this down to the sentence. I will give you today, and in this sentence, I think what it's going to do is give you a sense of who I am and why I do what I do.
In this short video, hear how I boiled my ministry focus down to one sentence.

Restlessness and Anxiety: Finding Rest in God's Presence
Do you struggle with a restless heart? We live in such a broken world where there is pain, misery, and suffering. How often is it that you find rest in this restless world?
Apart from God, Augustine of Hippo found that he sought after disordered loves that left his heart hungry, lonely, and enslaved.
Perhaps you have found the same in your life.
Augustine is known for this quote, “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”
He found that true rest is only secured in God alone. Our true happiness depends on us living consistently for the purpose for which we were created, chiefly to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
If you want to find deep, real, and satisfying happiness in this life, it can be found in no other person than God Himself.
In this brief video, learn about finding rest in God’s presence.

Psalm 69 - Hated without Cause
https://jameslongjr.org/
Sundays in the Psalms / Psalm 69
Prayer for protection
In the psalm, we will hear of a man who is hated without reason and is being falsely accused.
But rather than thinking of his own reputation, he is more concerned about how other believers are being affected.
We also hear of a misunderstood man, yet a man who continues to pray. He was begging God to listen to him not because of his own goodness but because of God's mercy and kindness.
David's sorrow will encourage us to look at Jesus Christ and what He suffered for all of those who would trust in Him as the Savior and Lord.
Psalm 69 ends by focusing on the future and ends with a burst of praise.
How was the psalmist able to praise? Because he was able to look towards God's promised salvation as he dealt with the present pain.
There will be much for us to learn from this great psalm.
