Torrential downpours caused flash flooding in parts of southern Spain on Sept. 23. The flooding left homes inundated and cars submerged. Video showed cars being washed away by the flood waters in Almendralejo and Lepe. As much as 100 mm of rain accumulated in parts of Huelva province over a 12-hour period, according to the Andalusian Meteorological Agency.

Record-breaking rainfall has pounded Spain's east coast, triggering massive flooding across the Valencia region which is on Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast. It recorded more than 200 millimeters of rainfall in a 24-hour period, this is the highest daily figure.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was in Malaga to visit the Reception and Assistance Centre for Ukrainian Refugees, which opened in the Palacio de Ferias Congresos on 6thof April. He explained that one more module measuring 5,000 square metres is to be added in the adjoining car park, to provide prefabricated housing with bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and a small living room. Refugees will be able to stay there for a few days while more permanent accommodation is being found for them, which may be elsewhere in Spain. In the two weeks the centre has been opened, it has handled nearly 2,000 applications for temporary protection and has issued 1,300 Social Security numbers for those who want to find work.

Sheep replaced cars on the streets of Madrid on Sunday, as shepherds led their flocks through the centre of the Spanish capital following ancient herding routes. The annual event, which started in 1994, allows shepherds to use traditional routes to herd their livestock from northern Spain to more southerly pastures for winter grazing. Locals and tourists alike lined the route and watched as thousands of sheep were herded through the city, with bells around their necks as part of a centuries-old tradition passed on by Spanish farmers. Just a few centuries ago, the route would have taken them through quiet countryside, but today it has them traverse some of the busiest streets of the city. Many onlookers were surprised by the unexpected sight in a city usually thronged with traffic. "I've never seen anything like it. It was a great way to learn about Spanish history and Spanish culture," said 22-year-old English teacher Maria Kouriaalis, who has been living in Madrid for a month.

Colombian naval officials monitoring a sunken Spanish ship laden with treasure have discovered two other historical shipwrecks nearby, President Iván Duque has announced. Bastille Day fireworks celebrations were banned in France as a state of emergency was declared in Italy, where daytrippers fled to the beaches. In Spain and Portugal there were forest fires, as health warnings were issued across many European countries struggling under the oppressive heat. In the UK there were warnings the NHS could buckle under the pressure of the heatwave.

Thousands of trade union members rallied in the Spanish capital Madrid on Thursday demanding higher wages to cope with the soaring cost of living.

Spanish prosecutors are looking into a group of male university students who were caught on camera in Madrid yelling vulgar, misogynistic insults at female students. Then, in a planned action, students from the Colegio Mayor Elas Ahuja building across the street pulled open their curtains and began yelling and making animal noises. There was an instant reaction to the Complutense University students' video that went viral on Sunday night.

Parts of western Europe have been experiencing extreme heat under a wave of hot air that has moved north from Africa. Temperatures in both Spain and France have broken records, putting pressure on hospitals and energy grids.

A massive clean-up operation is under way in the Spanish city of Valencia after record-breaking rainfall. Dozens of cars were submerged as floodwater surged through neighbourhoods of the city, leaving homes and businesses waterlogged. The severe weather forced authorities to close the city's metro system and several roads, and a team of ambulance workers had to be rescued from their vehicles.
