Chicken Wire vs. Hardware Cloth #shorts
Chicken wire is not for chickens but there's more to it than just the safety of your flock. Hardware cloth is much easier to install and if you're a DIYer it will save you lots of time, make for better-looking results, and leave you with a safer home for your birds.

Can you use Lime in Your Barn? First Saturday Lime First Impressions {Barn Cleanout}
Is lime safe for your farm animals? We’re using First Saturday Lime in our goat stall to prevent smells and odors and to keep pests like flies and fly larvae down. Our review and first impressions of First Saturday Lime, as seen on the TV show Shark Tank.

Why might you consider adding lime to your barn stalls? Smell prevention and pest deterrent are the two main reasons.
The two most common varieties of lime are hydrated lime and garden lime. Hydrated lime is potent; highly effective but caustic, when mixed with water (like urine) it can cause burns. Garden lime is safe but not especially effective.
That’s where First Saturday Lime comes in. First Saturday Lime claims to be the best of both types so it’s effective like hydrated lime but safe like garden lime. We first learned about this product from the TV show Shark Tank and we purchased it with our own money. We’re excited to put it to work on our farm and are hopeful to see good results.

Did We Screw Up? // VLOG
One lesson I’ve learned the hard way is that while it is good to be ambitious with your goals it is also important to be flexible and allow for plans to change. What do you do when your best laid plans begin to fall apart? My thoughts on that, plus we spend some quality family time with the kids doing chores around the farm.
One of the goals we set for our farm is to grow as much of our food as possible. We do our best to keep a garden, we plan to start meat chickens soon (later this year?), and this is the third summer we’ve kept a beef steer. This time we decided to be ambitious and keep two steers, hoping to make a little extra money for the farm since we’re already growing the grass.
You may know about all the grief these two knucklehead cattle have caused us since arriving on the farm and Big Ears in particular is not getting any friendlier. Are we doing to have to take him to the auction before he makes into our freezer? How do we overcome the stress of all this?
We don’t – at least, not without serious help from the Almighty.
Since it was such a beautiful day we spent some time doing chores with the kids. They were a huge reason we decided to buy the farm; we wanted them to grow up outside, learning to care for God’s creation and having an appreciation of where food comes from. They love getting to help out with tasks and as they continue to grow they’re becoming better helpers. But they really seem to enjoy what we’re doing and I’m sure when they’re older they’ll look back with great fondness on these memories.
Thank you for watching this video! If you haven’t already please consider subscribing to the channel, we really appreciate you supporting what we’re doing around here. See y’all soon!

How to Make Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls // Top Notch Breakfast
These fluffy, delicious cinnamon rolls are the perfect icing-topped breakfast treat! Incredibly sweet and easy to make from scratch, follow this step-by-step tutorial and you’ll be eating mouth-watering cinnamon rolls in no time. The recipe we followed is linked below – cheers!

We love sourdough bread. Loaf, pretzels, cinnamon rolls, desserts; we don’t discriminate, they’re all incredible. Master Chef Megan (she won’t call herself that but I will) fired up the KitchenAid mixer and made a double batch of these cinnamon rolls for our Easter breakfast at church and they were amazing. I wasn’t even the least bit disappointed that we came home with an entire pan!

Goat Birth Goes Sideways FAST! Can We Save Her?
BIG PROBLEM! Our excitement for new baby goat kids faded quickly when we realized our Nigerian Dwarf doe had a prolapsed uterus. Will she survive?
Brandi Carlile (the goat) is the next doe to kid here on our farm. After our buck, Benji, Brandi and her doeling, Annie Oakley, were the next dairy goats we brought onto our homestead in February 2020. This is Brandi’s first kidding since then and we’re eagerly awaiting a baby or two. Brandi comes from @Anne of All Trades Nashville homestead and has a great milking pedigree, so with two does in milk at the same time we are hoping to ramp up the goat milk production.
On Sunday (Palm Sunday, if you care), during our routine morning chores, we were shocked to find that Brandi had kidded early – one healthy doeling, and one stillborn. We were so excited, until we noticed that something was wrong with Brandi. After a few phone calls and emails back and forth with our vet our fears were confirmed, Brandi had a prolapsed uterus and needed to go into the vet.
It was nerve-wracking experience but we are happy to report that the veterinarian believes Brandi will be able to have babies again and that this shouldn’t be a recurring issue.
Thank you for watching our channel – we really appreciate your support! We hope you take a moment this weekend to enjoy the Easter holiday and remember the great sacrifice that God made on our behalf. God loves you. We’ll see you soon!

Tornado Cleanup // Making Firewood & How to Pull a Fence Post
Mayfield, KY – cleaning up debris from the December EF4 tornado at my friend Travis @Trav & J Outdoors house. Turning a downed tree into firewood with Dad’s Stihl 041 Farm Boss chainsaw, then pulling fence posts set in concrete with a Hi-Lift jack. Doing things the old school way with old school tools.
I have a lot of fond memories of times spent around this chainsaw. If I remember the story correctly Dad bought it as a graduation gift to himself and used it for many, many years. We heated our home with a wood-burning stove and so much of childhood was spent with the sound of this saw running in my periphery. Dad has gone home but the Stihl is still here, still making firewood, running as good as ever. I just sharpened the chain (first time I’ve ever done so) and I’m very pleased with how it turned out.
Travis and his wife are getting a new fence installed after the tornado relocated half of it to another zip code and a Hi-Lift jack made short work of pulling the remaining posts, even the ones set in concrete. Wrap a chain around the base of the post, set the jack on a block of wood so it doesn’t sink into the soft ground, and start cranking. If it comes up at a bad angle you may have to reset but it beats the heck out of digging the post out by hand.

INFERTILE GOAT? Nigerian Dwarf doe Diagnosis & Treatment
How can you tell if your goat is infertile? Can it be treated, and what are your options?
One of our Nigerian Dwarf does has been in with our buck for 6 months and has not settled (been impregnated) yet. Though it is incredibly uncommon for a female Nigerian Dwarf to be infertile it is possible, but there are other factors that could be affecting her fertility.
While at the vet we took three of our bucklings (Kayce, Oscar, and Kash) in for disbudding. We were here for this purpose with two other kids only a few weeks ago but all three boys were slow developing horn buds; we brought them in today so we won’t have to worry about that going forward.
To close Megan talks about our doeling, Jolene, who died late last week. Jolene had been struggling for a time and was unable to pull through. It’s upsetting but animals come with problems and while we do our best to care and provide for them sometimes it just isn’t enough.
Thank you all so much for watching this video, and if you want to see more on our goat herd be sure to subscribe to the channel. We have more goat kids coming in a few week and when we get Annie sorted out (positive thoughts!) we’ll have even more coming later in the year. Even without babies being born there’s no shortage of things to do around here and we hope you’ll join us on our journey. See y’all soon!

Unload Rounds Bales by Yourself – No Tractor Required! // VLOG
Unloading big hay bales out of a pickup truck without a tractor front-end loader or other heavy equipment can be done, even without any extra help. Bonus points for creativity.
The spring season is winding up and though the grass is growing we still need hay to feed our goat herd and to keep our beef steers’ guts happy (they cannot be on pasture as it is too close to their butchering date – that, and they have proven themselves untrustworthy). As our herd has grown a lot in the past year and because the beef steer timeline became accelerated we were running out of hay and had to track some down in a hurry. The best deal we could find were these two round bales.
Typically we feed square bales since we only feed hay in the barn and because we don’t have a good way to handle round bales. But since this is what we could get on short notice we’re going to carve off chunks of hay as we need it and take it to the barn for the critters.
With our current equipment (a pickup bed and a 5x8 tilt trailer) we can haul two round bales. Unloading the trailer is the easiest task; the truck was a little more difficult but gravity is always on (it’s the law) and with a conglomeration of straps and chains we got the second big bale unloaded without injury.
Once that was done we took a moment to go the barn and fix the new gate we just put up in front of our bulk feed tote. When we installed the gate it was about 1-1/8” too far over and the gate would latch closed. We plugged the gate hardware holes and drilled new ones, reinstalled the gate, and everything worked out great.
Coming up soon Megan is going to talk about her trip to the vet with one of our Nigerian Dwarfs does who is having trouble getting bred. Be sure you’re subscribed so you’ll see when that goes live. Thanks for watching our channel – see y’all soon!

BAD BEEF! They JUMPED the Fence!
Our new freezer beef steers jumped the fence and ran off! This story is crazy. Remember the nursery rhyme “Hey diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon”? She was probably a Charolais.
Some days go better than others, and this past weekend was full of “others.” Recently we purchased two beef steers to finish on our farm before they head to the butcher for processing. We kept them in the barn for a week so they would calm down and get used to us (and the feed bucket) before we turned them out on pasture. However, 30 minutes after they left the barn for the first time, one of them jumped the fence and ran off, and the other steer was close behind.
It made for a really bad day full of stress and worry, and that bad day stretched out into the whole weekend, and then it bled over into the first of the week as well.
The first steer (“Little Richard”) jumped in the field with the neighbor’s cattle and he settled down quickly. Three days later we had a couple cowboys wrangle him into a trailer and bring him back to the homestead. However, steer #2 (who we have named “Big Richard”) didn’t quit running until he was miles away from the house. When he was finally captured down the road he had travelled nearly 5 miles. Big thanks to Shad Seals at Seals Quarter Horses & Livestock for his help throughout this process – it’s good to know people who can help when things get a little (okay, a lot) crazy.
Thank you for watching this video, and if you haven’t already please consider subscribing to the channel so you won’t miss the next video. It can get a little hectic around here but this is our life and we want to share it with you. I will leave you with the following lyrics from the Corb Lund song “Cows Around”.
“What else can make the bishop swear like a sailor might?
What else can cause such tension between a man and his wife?
What else could ever bring all these enhancements to your life?
May you always have cows around.”
