Raise Your Own Beef: Our FIRST 5 Mistakes!
Raising your own beef is an excellent way to put your land to work and provide food for your family. These are the first five mistakes we made in raising a beef steer. We’re sharing so you don’t have to make the same ones!

We raise our own beef because it allows us to use our property to feed our family. Homegrown beef is AMAZING and by selling half of the steer it allows us to offset some of the costs of purchasing and finishing the animal.
We buy a weaned calf from a local farm and raise it until it reaches its final desired weight. By taking this approach we incur the cost of purchasing the animal. If we were a full-blown ranch and kept a herd of cows and a couple of bulls obviously we wouldn’t have to buy the calves. We don’t have the space for that, and we don’t have a desire to keep a bull around either, so we buy the calves. I would say it works out to be more expensive than raising mom and dad, but this is what works for our family.
This is the third summer on the farm and this was Attempt #3 at raising beef. Now that we’ve established WHY, let’s talk about WHAT we’ve done wrong and how we’ll be doing it differently in the future.
1. Feed them!
2. Make sure you are equipped to handle them (fences, property, trailer, etc)
3. Find a reputable butcher and schedule your processing date EARLY
4. Get the right breed
5. Buying one that hasn’t been handled much
6. Bonus: Once you get your system figured out, try to buy another one
In the coming weeks we’ll be making another video about how much meat we got off of a half beef. If you have specific questions please feel free to drop them in the comments below and we’ll be happy to address them.
Thank you for watching our channel! If you haven’t already please consider subscribing so you won’t miss the next video. See y’all soon!

Why Didn’t My Guinea Eggs Hatch?
Hatching guinea fowl eggs in our incubator, but did we have a bad batch of eggs? I need your help to figure out what went wrong with our guinea egg incubation. There’s a silver lining in this story, too, and I’m excited to share that with you.

It’s always fun to load up an incubator and hatch your own chicks, and there’s a certain joy and satisfaction I get watching the baby birds break through the shell and emerge into the world. However, when things don’t go right it can leave you scratching your head wondering what went wrong.
While these eggs were in the incubator we were also putting our broody hens to work; if they want to sit, let them sit on guinea eggs. Six of the seven eggs were hatched by two surrogate momma hens and aside from the first one seemingly abandoning her hatch things have gone great so far. And because we already had the incubator going and the brooder ready we grabbed the three abandoned keets and got them situated in a warm, controlled environment.
If you have any suggestions or thoughts on why we may have had a bad hatch in our incubator please put them in the comments section below. And thank you so much for taking the time to watch our channel – if you haven’t already subscribed please consider it so you won’t miss the next video. See y’all soon!

Butchering Meat Rabbits with @Sage and Stone Homestead
Learning how to process meat rabbits with our new friends at Sage and Stone Homestead. Rabbits are a great way to raise meat for your family whether you live in the city or in the country and the butchering process can be learned quickly. Rabbits are great homestead animals for a variety of reasons: they grow quickly, are easy to process, and their droppings are great fertilizer for your garden. And they’re delicious, too!
Part of the reason we purchased land is the ability to raise as much of our own meat as possible. To some people this may look cruel but these animals are treated humanely and live great lives from birth to death (our philosophy is “Only One Bad Day”). Taking the life of another living being should not be done lightly and we are thankful for what these animals provide for our families.
Thank you for watching this video! It was a great day and we learned a lot – I hope you learned a little along the way, too. If you’re new around here and want to follow along on our homesteading journey please consider subscribing to the channel. See y’all soon!

Visiting Sage and Stone Homestead {Farm Tour} // Meat Rabbits, Dairy Goats, & More!
Heather and Levi with @Sage and Stone Homestead were kind enough to open their farm for a visit so after our morning farm chores were done we loaded up the family and headed down the road! We recently traveled down the road to Sage and Stone Homestead for a rabbit butchering day. It was a great opportunity to learn, meet some great folks, and put a little food in the freezer. Heather and Levi have a lot going on – besides raising meat rabbits they also keep dairy goats, a garden and greenhouse, Kunekune pigs, bees, and much more.
The story of how we met is a pretty funny one. They found our video on First Saturday Lime and commented. In my excitement that another homestead channel found one of our videos (small channel things) I realized they were located nearby. After reaching out and corresponding a little they invited us over for a rabbit butchering day, and here we are.
Getting connected and building a community is very important and it was great to meet a few fellow homesteaders. If you’re new to our channel please be sure to subscribe – we’d love to have you be a part of our journey. See y’all soon!

Planting Triple Crown Blackberries // Spring 2022 Orchard Update
Triple Crown blackberries are thornless and bear HUGE fruit. Is that enough to make them the best tame blackberries you can grow? Keeton and I also provide an update on our orchard that we planted last year.

Megan has been keeping an eye out for thornless blackberries to add to our orchard and during a trip to the local Amish greenhouse we came across this Triple Crown variety. Triple Crowns are thornless (a necessity in our house), semi-erect (adding a trellis may not be required), and they bear gigantic fruit (YUM). With that knowledge in hand we plucked up two plants and got them in the ground.
When transplanting trees or bushes its best to dig a hole about 2x the size of the pot the plants are coming from. This helps the roots grow and become established without any extra hindrances. Also, do not plant your plants any deeper than what they are in the pot. Any extra soil piled up around the base of the plant could choke it out and cause it to die.
Blackberries – like a few other plants, including blueberries – like slightly acidic soil. We added pine needle mulch around our plants to bring the pH of our soil down as the needles decompose. We’ve heard peat moss works great for this as well so you can try that if it’s necessary.
Our orchard has done great since last year and we’re all excited to enjoy the fruits (pun intended) of our labor. Our pear tree will require another heavy pruning in the fall/winter but when you’re working to promote the plants to grow in a particular shape that’s just part of the job. Spring is such an exciting time on the farm and we thank you for being here to be a part of it. If you haven’t already please consider subscribing to the channel so you won’t miss the next video. See y’all soon!

Fill Your Garden Beds for CHEAP! Modified Hugelkultur Gardening
Filling our new raised garden beds and saving money on soil costs by using sticks and grass clippings as part of a modified hugelkultur approach. Plus, installing a cattle panel bean tunnel trellis for cucumbers, pole beans, and luffa gourds.

We started with putting cardboard in the bottom of our beds as a weed barrier; it helps with the initial fill up and breaks down over time so our deep-rooting vegetables have access to more dirt than what is in the bed now. Then we added sticks, grass clippings, and other natural lawn debris to the beds – things that will compost over time but allow us to save some money on the soil fill-up.
Once our beds were as full as we could reasonably get them we added topsoil we purchased in bulk from a local store. Soil is much cheaper if you can buy it by the scoop rather than the bag and if you are filling multiple large beds those savings add up quick.
Finally we added a cattle panel trellis for pole beans, luffa gourds, and cucumbers. We see these things everywhere now and they always look so good when they’re grown up. In the future we’ll add more but for now this is a great start.

Time to Say Goodbye
Our meat goats, Bonnie and Clyde, are leaving the farm and heading to auction. Why are we selling them?

When we bought our home several years back Bonnie and Clyde, two Savanna X Kiko meat goats from Shirley Family Farm (Taylorsville, KY), were the first two farm animals we brought to the homestead. We had very high hopes that they would help clear some of our fence rows and keep our fields a little mowed down. However, it wasn’t long until we changed gears and moved in another direction (dairy goats) and Bonnie and Clyde just didn’t quite fit in.
It was a bittersweet day for a sentimental guy like me but we raise livestock, not pets. If an animal doesn’t fit into our plans like both we and the animal need to move on to the next chapter of our lives.
