GotBooks Ep. 12 - The Three Most Important Words with Dave Lane
Today's episode greets Dave Lane, CEO and Managing Editor of Evolved Publishing to discuss "The Three Most Important Words" in editing: "As it happens..."
As Dave reviews novel submissions for Evolved Publishing, his three most important words guide his philosophy that the scene show us the moment that matters. Dave believes we need prose that is more "visual in its presentation" and less lazy by using telling descriptors instead of what shows us the scene as it is happening.
Covered in this episode are highlights from the Evolved Publishing website's articles in Resources for Writers: https://evolvedpub.com/resources-for-writers/
Topics include: Showing versus Telling; Infinite-Verb Phrases giving readers an “Act without an Actor;" Mixing Up Your Sentence Structure without using Infinite-Verb Phrases; and Dialogue enhancement by avoiding adverbs in the dialogue tags.
Dave warns against adverbs in dialogue tags because this goes into "telling mode," while most of the time showing is better. For example, don't get lazy and tell us the character was alarmed. Show us the provocation, and how she responds will show us the character is alarmed. While adverbs will decrease word count, they also decrease the emotional impact of the scene.
Hop over to the Resources for Writers page for these articles and the examples therein. Thanks for watching and listening, we'll see you next time!

Welcome to today's update episode. GotBooks has a few interviews and special segments. I figure it's time to give a plan for this channel and who I am.
Who's this guy, Tim?
Through four pen names, he has written as:
1. Timothy C. Ward - Godsknife: Revolt and Sand Divers books. Post-Apocalyptic Scifi and Fantasy Thrillers
2. Tim Kaiver - Ciphercraft series of LitRPG Scifi/Fantasy
3. Theo Hodges - Badges of Dorkdom and upcoming, Gatekeepers series of LitRPG, Progression Fantasy novels.

New online home >>> WardBook.com where I'll share updates on any of my books and blog reading material for my favorite books to share.
GotBooks Mission: Create video content that enhances the reader experience of their authors and new ones to discover. This could be catching up with fellow authors as they release new books, or it could be topical such as writing Thrillers. I also plan to share some new books I buy and what I'm excited to read.
The goal for 2024 is to finish Gatekeepers: War Tactics and Godsknife: Revenge while reading and encouraging other authors and readers in this community of Thriller and Genre books.
A little bit is sharing how my two spine fusions have forced me to redesign how I write, including the Plottr app for its helpful Timeline, Notes, Characters, and many other features.
The best place to find my books is Amazon and Audible. Thank you for your support! Is there an author you'd like me to interview this year? What book are you excited to start reading?

GotBooks on the Shelf! Sons of War 4 by Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Tom Abrahams
In this new segment, I share why Sons of War is a great thriller series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith.
While Hell Divers is Nick’s most popular series, I’m “this” close to calling Sons of War my favorite work of his.
The mafioso and multiple POV character work is like Romeo and Juliet for Top Gun fans. When a mass casualty attack strikes US soil, gangs of LA cross with National Guard and a coup. I loved how you root for his characters and their attempts to survive.
The jet fighter scenes were intense, and the prose keeps it going at a fast pace. More than that is the emotional impact on characters we quickly care for and will be shocked at what they endure.
I just picked up books 1-3 on Chirp for $2 each even though I have the hardbacks. It’s good!
