We need more farmers!
I had the opportunity to sell some piglets to a local high school for their agricultural program and it was really encouraging to see young people getting exposure to farming so early on.
I didn’t know about how many government regulations penalize small farms until I started participating myself and getting more people involved is the only way to make changes so that we have the opportunity to compete with massive producers and grocery chains and make healthy foods that regenerate the earth in an ethical way available for everyone!
Start now. Don’t make excuses to wait. It’s a process of problem solving and the more people who take an active role in our supply chain, the more it creates opportunity for us to grow. It’s easy to doubt if you have what it takes to raise animals and wait for things to be more perfect.
special thanks to the Kimball Union Academy (website below) crew and Blaine Kopp for putting this program together and running it!

The hardest part of farming
Farm talk
Farming is supposed to be easy, right?
As luck would have it, farming is quite difficult and the hardest elements are often the least obvious and foreseeable. This is all based on my experience as a first generation homestead farmer, so perhaps my experience isn’t the same as yours but I’d love to compare notes.
Time management, and all the things that have to be done before the FARMING gets done—that’s the hardest part! Dealing with all of the failures and lessons and being durable enough to handle that repeatedly is the backstop to success. Can you go the distance? That is the question I have to answer daily and I know I’m not the only one.
I am sharing my process of learning farming to encourage and improve what we are doing to grow food and families together. Farm talk is my show and Rowan Ridge Farm in SW New Hampshire is my home!
