In this milestone episode of FAIRtax Power Radio, we take our first look at congress.gov for 2022. As usual, what some of the Congress Critters want to put in the tax code make the best arguments for pulling the whole thing out by the roots and replacing it with the FAIRtax. Then, the Guys dig into something truly unbelievable—IRS Publication 17. It started with a meme on social media purporting to be an excerpt from an official IRS publication. The idea is so preposterous everyone thought it was fake, but it’s not. It’s real. 2023 had promised to be a watershed year for the FAIRtax. In order to secure the Speakership of the House, Kevin McCarthy had to promise to bring the FAIRtax up for a vote—something that hasn’t happened since the FAIRtax was first introduced into Congress in 1999. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and Kevin McCarthy is no longer Speaker. It remains to be seen whether or not Speaker Mike Johnson will honor the promise that McCarthy made and allow the FAIRtax to be voted on in this session of Congress. So, as 2024 begins, the FAIRtax Guys take a look at the state of the FAIRtax. Some of it’s encouraging and some of it, not so much.

The FAIRtax has become a hot topic in the media, be it broadcast media, print media or social media. While it’s generally a good thing that the FAIRtax is getting this attention, there’s a lot being said about the FAIRtax that isn’t the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The FAIRtax Guys’ series “The Rest of the Story” seeks to fill people in on various aspects of the FAIRtax that are being either suppressed or distorted in the media. Part two of the three part series deals with a theme that’s been brought up time and again—that the FAIRtax hurts the poor.

There’s a lot about the FAIRtax in the media that’s just not true. Some may be due to unfamiliarity with the FAIRtax and how it works, but most of it seems to be deliberate misrepresentation in an effort to turn people against it. This week, the FAIRtax Guys tackle two particularly prevalent deceptions—the FAIRtax rate itself, and how much of your income you’ll actually pay in FAIRtax. People who have learned about the FAIRtax largely from the elite media will be pleasantly surprised when they hear the rest of the story.

Congressman Mo Brooks from Alabama is a well-known figure in American politics. He is also a very strong FAIRtax supporter having been a cosponsor of HR-25 from the very beginning of his tenure in the US House of Representatives. Congressman Brooks is running for the US Senate in 2022. He was the first, and so far, the only Senate candidate to sign the FAIRtax candidate pledge in this election cycle. FAIRtax Guy Bob Paxton recently spoke with him on a variety of topics. In that conversation, his message was loud and clear—FAIRtax supporters need to do a better job electing candidates who will replace the income tax with the FAIRtax.

When the FAIRtax Guys decided to do a series on what the media will either suppress or distort about the FAIRtax, they thought it would take two or maybe three episodes to cover it. They examine the effect of the prebate on families of different income levels and also tackle the question of whether or not it’s fair to give rich families and poor families the same prebate.

This past March after the FAIRtax had been promised a vote in the House of Representatives, Brookings Institute, a long time member of the Washington establishment, published an article supposedly analyzing the FAIRtax. Like many others before it, Brookings had to twist the FAIRtax into something it isn’t in order to muster and argument against it. Like many others before it, the article was full of opinion presented as fact.
