These instructions show students how to locate and organize health related data from the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System & CDC Wonder.

Socioeconomics is the driving force behind resource consumption. Is it always a zero-sum game? This open-ended activity involves gathering raw data from the CIA Factbook and other sources to generate a wide variety of scatter plots that elucidate this relationship. These video snippets are taken from my participation in the December 12 MAGA rally in Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C. This follows up with the presentations that followed the Jericho March at the National Mall.

The video shows how to store a hypereutrophic water sample for several days until you get a chance to take it to the lab to measure BOD.

Students measure the effect of aeration, temperature, salinity, air pressure, and hypereutrophication on dissolved oxygen. Make sure you use a reliable oxygen meter whose accuracy is not compromised by changes in temperature.

Students learn about photosynthesis and carbon sequestration by subjecting samples of nutrient-enriched pond water to different levels of carbon dioxide. The gas was obtained by dissolving Alka-Seltzer in water.

This is relatively easy and inexpensive method for quantifying some of the most important properties of soils. These include permeability/infiltration, saturated water holding capacity, and dry bearing strength.

Activated yeast are exposed to serial concentrations of household bleach. Carbon dioxide production by the yeast is used to determine the lethal dose. This provides a fast an inexpensive means for students to apply the principle of dose-response to different pollutants. The fermentation vials were obtained from the Carolina Biological Supply (Basic Fermentation BioKit).

This provides an alternative to using a conductivity meter. Even though 9-volt batteries are cheaper and safer, their voltage may drop during discharge if they have been heavily used. This would make your readings unreliable. If you want to use 9-volt batteries they need to be fresh. Lead-acid batteries work best because their voltage only drops when they are almost completely discharged. Graphite electrodes are used because electrolysis process is very corrosive in most metals.
