The Food and Drug Administration is set to ban Juul e-cigarettes from being sold in the United States, according to a report. The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that the FDA could announce the decision as soon as Wednesday. The agency had been investigating Juul for the past two years while the company sought approval to continue selling its nicotine pods. Shares of Altria Group, the cigarette maker which owns a 35% stake in Juul, were down by more than 9% as of 12:30 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday. Juul landed in hot water some four years ago when its flavored e-cigarettes, which were touted at the time as a carcinogen-free and healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, were being blamed for a surge in youth vaping.

The Supreme Court has struck down New York’s century-old law restricting the carrying of concealed firearms, its first major Second Amendment decision in more than a decade and a ruling that could lead to more guns on the streets. Writing for the 6-3 majority, Justice Clarence Thomas said Thursday that the law’s requirement of New Yorkers who want a permit to carry a handgun in public to show “proper cause” that the weapon is ​specifically needed for self-defense “violates the Fourteenth Amendment by preventing law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their right to keep and bear arms in public.” Though the decision concerns New York law, it is likely to affect a handful of other states with similar permitting regimes, including California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Months after selling his mega-mansion in Orlando, Fla., the NBA legend purchased a much smaller, five-bedroom, six-bathroom estate in the Dallas suburbs. Located in Carrollton, the final listing price of the home was $1.224 million. But it appears the actual price O’Neal paid for it must have been way above asking. While the final sale price is hush-hush, the previous listing did note that there was a deadline for final offers by April 21 — only three days after it first hit the market. The competitive housing market means O’Neal likely overpaid for the property significantly. According to the Dallas Morning News, which was the first to report the transaction, O’Neal’s expansion of his Big Chicken restaurant chain in Texas was a factor in the purchase.

The Supreme Court has overturned its 49-year-old landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion throughout the US, upholding a Mississippi law banning the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy – and leaving the issue up to each of the 50 states. The opinion by Justice Samuel Alito for a 6-3 court also overturned a 1992 case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, in which the court found that state laws restricting abortion should not impose an “undue burden” on women seeking the procedure. “Abortion presents a profound moral question,” Alito wrote. “The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives.”

Six major cities nationwide, including New York and Los Angeles, are already on track to surpass last year’s staggering rates of violent crime, data shows. Reports of homicide, rape, assault and robbery are on pace to break 2021 levels halfway through the year – with a 25.8% surge in violent crime in the Big Apple atop the list, according to a review of NYPD statistics. A total of 189 murders have been tallied in New York City as of Sunday, the latest date of available data. That’s down more than 13% from 218 on the same date a year ago, but rapes, robberies and felony assaults are all up: 15.4%. 39.7% and 19.6%, respectively. Altogether, the 19,972 reports represent an increase of nearly 26% from 2021 levels, data shows. Violent crime is also up in Washington DC, where a 12% increase in such attacks was tallied thus far in 2022 compared to the same span a year ago, according to Fox News.
