017: Behind the Facade: Impacts of Government Regulations on Home Construction with Shane Wenzel
Get ready for another episode of 'Dialogue over Division' as we welcome Shane Wenzel, President & CEO of the Shane Homes Group of Companies. With years of experience navigating the intricacies of development and housing, Shane brings a wealth of knowledge about this subject that often seems overwhelming for the average citizen.
In this episode, we dive deep into the impact of government policies on the housing market. Shane has been involved in providing policy advice and publicly shedding light on how government regulations impact the homebuilding process. One key takeaway from our discussion? Despite the rhetoric and photo ops, it's clear that no level of government is directly involved in building homes. Instead, they contribute by crafting rules and regulations that can either facilitate or impede home construction and consequently the housing market.
Particularly striking is municipalities' approach to understanding housing development complexities. Whether they're in over their heads or simply misinterpreting the nuances, municipalities seem to struggle to grasp their role and jurisdiction, the realities of development, and the direct impact it has on the housing market.
Join us for this episode, airing just in time for Calgary's big town hall on April 22, 2024, where the topic of blanket rezoning will be in the spotlight. We're here to equip you with the knowledge and insights you need to navigate these crucial conversations and fulfill your civic responsibility. Don't miss out - tune in for an insightful discussion with Shane Wenzel!

015: Youth in Action: Alexa Posa's Civic Engagement Journey
Welcome to another episode of Dialogue over Division. In today's installment, we're excited to introduce Alexa Posa, a young lady who embodies the essence of proactive citizenship.
Alexa's civic journey commenced unexpectedly when she was suspended from college due to not disclosing her vaccine status. Rather than sit back passively, Alexa took matters into her own hands. She made the decision to engage civically, seizing every opportunity to attend events, talk to others and try to find some answers.
Driven by her curiosity about Edmonton's 15-minute city policies, Alexa took steps to gain clarity about the city's proposals. She organized meetups and arranged interviews with city councillors and other city officials, in an effort to gain clarity on behalf of her community.
Indeed, Alexa is a shining example of seizing opportunities and refusing to wait for others to take action. She underscores the simple truth that all it takes to be a citizen journalist is a phone and probing questions. So, let's take Alexa's example, pick up our phones, pose some tough questions, and witness the impact we can collectively make.
I look forward to witnessing Alexa's continued journey, and I hope her story inspires you to play an active role in fostering positive change within your own community.

014: Driving Civic Participation: Landon Johnston and the Recall Gondek Campaign
Welcome to another episode of "Dialogue over Division" with Landon Johnston, the driving force behind the hugely successful Recall Gondek petition. When I say "successful," I'm referring to how the Recall Gondek petition has ignited civic engagement in Calgary, something all Canadians should take note of. Regardless of whether the petition achieves its goal, citizens of Calgary are sending a message to elected officials and are actively participating in democracy.
For those who may not be familiar, Jyoti Gondek is the mayor of Calgary. With her approval rating at an all-time low and her advocacy for controversial policies affecting Calgarians, Landon recognized the widespread disapproval and felt compelled to take action.
It's worth noting that Landon is a tradesman—an ordinary, good-hearted, and honest individual who saw an issue and decided to act. Motivated by his concern for justice and fairness, he launched the Recall Gondek petition, which quickly gained momentum. However, Landon and his team have faced numerous hurdles and endured many attacks along the way, from navigating administrative hurdles to responding to vandalized signs. But nothing stopped them.
At a time when civic engagement is more crucial than ever, initiatives like the Recall Gondek petition highlight the importance of ordinary citizens actively participating in the democratic process. It demonstrates how individuals like Landon can effect change and hold elected officials accountable. It is worth noting that Mayor Gondek has already accounted that she will not be seeking re-election, this is not a coincidence.
In my view, to ensure our democracy remains robust, we should actively encourage civic engagement. So, what are you waiting for? You have four more days to get involved!
