Russia has once again extended the pre-trial detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, 32, who was arrested last year on espionage charges. The court ordered that his detention be extended until 30 March which means the Wall Street Journal reporter will spend over one year behind bars as he awaits trial. Mr Gershkovich, his newspaper, and the US deny the espionage charges. US officials have called for his immediate release.

Computer programmer Eugenia Kuyda is the founder of Replika, a US chatbot app that says it offers users an "AI companion who cares, always here to listen and talk, always on your side". Other apps in the mental health sector are far more cautious about using AI in the first place. Forty-five people have died in South Africa after the bus they were in plunged off a bridge into a ravine, authorities have said. An eight-year-old girl, the only survivor, was taken to hospital. United Nations chief, Antonio Guterres, has made a renewed call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza after a visit to the Rafah border crossing. The call comes as the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 19 people waiting for aid were killed by Israeli forces. Israel has denied firing on the crowd. Mr Guterres said it is "time to silence the guns" and stop the "nightmare", as he described the ongoing loss of life in Gaza as a moral outrage. He called on Israel to give total access to humanitarian goods throughout the territory.
