How To Correctly Fit A Dog Training Collar To Stop Pulling
What is the best way to put on a Canny Collar? Here are detailed instructions on how to properly fit a Canny Collar on your dog so that it is secure and comfortable.
The soft, sturdy slip line over your dog's nose adjusts effortlessly to fit the contour of your dog's face. Your dog can easily breathe, pant, and even hold a ball or toy in her mouth because it is merely one light piece of webbing. As a result, when meeting other dog owners, it will never be mistaken for a muzzle. The collar is composed of high-quality, padded, cushioned webbing that is both robust and comfortable to wear around the neck. Your dog will be much more open to training if she is happy.
The D rings on the slip line are where your lead is attached. This functions independently of the collar and provides you with a direct link to your dog's steering. The slip line prevents your dog from tugging and lunging by delivering gentle pressure when he pulls and releasing it as soon as he stops. Just like your dog's standard collar, the collar part stays in place.
Secure the Canny Collar around your dog's neck, making sure the buckle is directly behind his ears at the back. Any excess collar should be folded and tucked beneath the buckle's mouth. As indicated, the Canny Collar should be worn higher on the neck than a traditional collar. Any dog training collar must have a secure fit to prevent it from falling off your dog while walking. Try to take the Canny Collar off your dog's head while facing him; if properly fitted, this should not be feasible.
Attach your lead to both 'D' rings at each end of the thin slip line by pulling each end behind your dog's head. Pull the slip line through the small yellow plastic guider at the front of the Canny Collar and place it over your dog's snout. It may be easier to do this before attaching the lead with some breeds. Before slipping the slip line over your dog's snout, take care not to twist it.
Make sure the plastic guider is tucked under your dog's chin. This is quite important. The Canny Collar will not work well if this plastic guider is not kept under the chin. You're now ready to take your dog for a walk.
When walking your dog, your lead should be kept short but loose so you can control him quickly and easily. An extendable lead, or similar dog training equipment, is not recommended for use with the Canny Collar as the slip line may not remain in place on your dog's snout.
When your dog starts pulling on the lead, apply gentle backward pressure. When he quits tugging, the pressure is released instantly. This pressure and release system is the key to using your Canny Collar correctly as your dog trains himself to stop pulling. Within a short time, walking your dog will become a pleasure again as he begins to walk happily by your side on a loose lead.
Some dogs may resist the first time you put the slip line over their face and try to paw it off. You must continue to walk and lift your dog's head by raising your lead. The Canny Collar can be used in conjunction with common positive reinforcement dog training methods such as clicker training or food-based reward training to help very difficult dogs accept it more quickly.
Instantly release the pressure on the Canny Collar by lowering your lead when he stops resisting. Once the initial resistance has stopped, release all pressure. Keep walking while giving him vocal praise, then stop and praise him lavishly.
When letting your dog off lead, the Canny Collar can be left on him by removing the slip line from his snout and pulling it out fully. Cross the slip line behind his head and drop it on either side of his head as shown. Bring the D rings together to meet underneath his chin and use one or two of the optional carabiner clips to secure the D rings together
