5 Most IMPORTANT Woodworking Rules
I wish I had asked someone what some of the most basic rules of woodworking was when I got serious about woodworking many years ago, it would have saved me hours or work and frustration, but instead, I learned these the hard way ... simple things like picking wood the wood for my projects and why knowing moisture content is so important, then the whole thing on tools and why accurate measuring tool quality is so important in machine set up and checking woodworking joints and joinery, and of course woodworking safety, which I did know, but things have changed a lot of the years for much better woodwork safer tool use.

What the Pros Won't Tell You, What's Best, Wood Dye or Wood Stain?
Choosing what woodworking finish to use is key to getting excellent results. Wood dye can be a great alternative and in many cases can be far superior to wood stains, but it really depends on the wood you are using, where the wood project will live and what it's purpose is; for example a wooden fence that lives outside, subjected to rain, wind, snow and sunlight is not a good candidate for wood dyes, on the other hand most Luthiers (custom guitar & violin makers etc.) will seldom use stain because of the "grain blocking" features of wood stain; when finishing any woodworking project to it's best, knowing what finishes to apply is just as important as knowing what woodworking tools to use.

Did I Invent a New, Foldable Woodwork Work Bench??
I needed a foldable, moveable and easy to set-up work table for the workshop but all I could find were foldable work benches that are attached to a wall, I need one on wheels, there were also TONS of flip top work benches with portable planers or grinders on them, but not what I was looking for so I worked backward from what I needed and designed this work surface, on wheels, constructed with a Birch Plywood top and cabinet plywood base, all standing on dry, solid pine legs that will easily support 200 pounds of weight, and with a 3' x 3' top it can fold down to under 20 inches and easily maneuver around my table saw, bandsaw, planer and jointer and even into other room if I need. It's super solid and tough as nails and I even invented a catch system so you can't accidently collapse the table without unlocking the switch ...

Create an Accent Table That "WOWS" Your Living Room!
Crafting a birch wood accent table for the living room is an intricate dance of woodworking tools, techniques and wood, each playing a crucial role in shaping raw timber into functional art. The table saw cuts basic shapes of the wood while the jointer and planer fine tune the edges. A wood router takes over to make the rabbet for the insert, Bird's-eye maple veneered top that is surrounded by the aniline dye framed wood giving the table it's distinctive look. The tapering jig guides the table legs through the saw, giving them an elegant taper and a touch of sophistication. A protective finish of Osmo is applied that gives the wood a low sheen that does not disguise the grain of the wood, but enhances texture and gives the wood rich appearance, a perfect accent table that seamlessly marries functionality and artistic allure for the living room.

Woodworking: Break-Down and Prep the Wood Like a Pro
Building woodworking projects requires understanding of how to break-down and prepare the wood, another form of "good woodworking practices"; Most wood we purchase at lumbers stores, even wood that is is kiln dried, is often only partially dried, a moisture meter will confirm this quickly; cleaning the wood before jointing and planing is crucial to keep blades sharp and not pitted and for discovering embedded metal in wood like the lead I discovered deep inside this board; Warped, twisted and bent wood needs special attention in order to get the most from your purchases and to work safely on your table saw, bandsaw and other woodworking tools, all of which makes wood preparation an important first step to making woodworking fun.

Pro-Level Wood Joinery: This Tool Changes Everything!
The Dowelmax joinery jig has been my "go to" woodworking jig for many years, it is easy to use and provides a quick way of making very strong joints that are extremely accurate and I have used for many different joints like edge grain to face grain cabinet making, very accurate board glue-ups and even for making furniture and cabinet doors, but one of my favorite uses is in table making for coffee tables, end tables, dinning tables and even bedside tables, the doweling jig provides a full range of uses and for me, replaced my biscuit joiner, and a mortising machine and gives me quicker end results and can I talk about how easy dry fits are now, this is easily the most versatile woodworking tool I have in my shop.

Master Cabinet Builder Reveals His Secrets
Nothing is more inspiring for woodworkers than spending time with a furniture craftsman who has a wide breadth of knowledge and evidence of his quality shows in his woodworking products and Paul McCuish is one of those people, that I had the pleasure of spending time to closely view his cabinetry, his boats, tables, cupboards, cutting boards and more. His table saw, bandsaw, jointer and wood planer are older, quality production woodworking tools that he has fine tuned for precise results. His wooden kayak and 14 foot rowboat are only the beginning to what has become a woodworker with an awesome suite of outstanding quality pieces of furniture.

All About Wood Burls Including the Crime Scene Connection
A wise old woodworker once told me that wood burls were the gemstones of woodworking because they were hard to find, beautiful to look at and each one is unique, and I have come to believe him because I have only stumbled upon a few burls in my lifetime and I want to fully use each one of them. Burls are highly sought after by wood turners for bowls, pen blanks and more, but for furniture makers, the most sought after (and probably most expensive) wood is burl wood, and most of that comes from Burl Veneers, where we can get the most coverage with the lease amount of waste. But there are other things we can use burl wood for, like door and drawer pulls, inlays on guitars and other musical instruments, highlights and a details on all kinds of furniture with inlays like leaves, flowers, birds or even strips of burl for edging or facing boxes like jewelry boxes all made from thin burl pieces, but somehow I think there must be more and I am looking for ideas and thoughts on using burl wood and would love to hear other peoples ideas and suggestion in the comment section.

Beyond Expectations: The Incredible Surprises of Crafting this Wooden Foot Locker
Making boxes is fun and easy, and if you make one a little larger it called a Footlocker or Boot Locker and it is one of the most fun projects I have made in years, I used Pine for the main box and laminated Cherry Plywood for the top and made is small enough to easily pack around but large enough to hold items, often of value, that many people might get attached to like Baseball or Basketball Cards, Books, Pictures, Clothes, Jewelry and even Collectables and Family Heirloom items, and so many ways to make a mini trunk like this like Box Joint or Dovetail Joinery, Butt Joints of Dowels, and how to decorate the Footlocker, hand painted pictures, laser etchings, carved designs, CNC cut designs ... list is endless, and these wooden boxes will last forever unlike plastic totes that become brittle, crack and break over the years, this wooden footlocker will last a lifetime ...

Woodworking Techniques: 5 Expert Ways for Building Cabinet Doors
Making cabinet doors is not as hard as it seems and there are a number of different ways of making them, starting with pocket hole jigs and a table saw to more robust cabinet frames using router based mortise and tenon bits, and even doweling jigs to get even stronger cabinet frames that might be needed for heavier insert panels, but there is even lap joint cabinet doors that can be made on the table saw, the with a bit of route rabbeting the insert panels can be made, but easiest, but not necessarily the most attractive cabinet doors are the "slab" doors that could be made from double sided melamine, Plywood, including double sided, Cherry and more, or even natural woods like Oak or Maple, many different options for woodworking and furniture making of cabinetry. And for all the DIY people who simply want to replace doors on existing cabinets, anyone with basic woodworking skills and a bit of time can save thousands of dollars by simply changing kitchen or bathroom cabinet door fronts, many, many options.

STOP Making Out-Dated Table Saw Sleds, Do This Instead
New woodworking tools come in many different ways, sometimes people invent wonderful new ideas for tools, other times an old design can take on a whole new look by some simple re-building like a my newly modified Crosscut Jig for the Table Saw; years ago I made (or over made) a Table Saw Sled that would last a dozen lifetimes, but it was huge and cumbersome, so a couple of years ago I made a simple cross cut jig on the same principals, but it as a quarter the size and weight and worked faster and more versatile, so much so the prototype I made kept getting used more and more until I was finally convinced to make a Permanent Jig, with Baltic Birch Plywood, Laminated Fence and I even got to use the old metal Mitre Bar from and long since dis-used Mitre Gauge that came with my saw. Now I have the ultimate cross cut jig, it fast, light, easy to use and SUPER accurate for make very wide cross cuts which comes in handy for furniture and cabinet making.
For More Detail on the build, including Tools and Parts like Plastic Mitre Gauge Blanks, check out the article on woodworkweb.com, the link is below.

Butane Torch in the Workshop!
This was a re-purchase for me because I had one of these torches up until about 6 months ago when it quit. I fiddled around and tried to fix it but there are sealed parts and I finally gave up trying to repair it. This unit happened to be on sale for around $12 and for that price was easily worth the money. I don't use these torches a lot, but they sure come in handy when I need some instant heat on some project. The filling is easy, you hole the nozzle of the Butane tank over the receiving nozzle on the bottom of the torch (holding the torch upside down) and in 6 seconds the torch is full and ready to use. Open the Butane valve on the torch, hit the striker switch a time or two and now you have an adjustable blue flame for all sorts of chores like
smaller soldering, even copper water pipes can be repaired in a pinch ,prevent fraying with plastic/nylon rope, burning wood on things like picture frames, small boxes, and other similar items. Watch the full video of me using this butane torch here: https://youtu.be/is4OF-pCI4s

Best Brush for Polyurethane!
While I was at Lee Valley, I also noticed a brand new item they have just started carrying, yes I'm talking about a plain old paint brush for things like Polyurethanes, Varnishes, and even some waterborne finishes that I use from time to time. I noticed that my "special" paint brush which is even labeled "Varnish Only", ended up being used for some painting chore by another family member, and did not get cleaned properly now it works well as a hammer and very poorly as a paintbrush.
What caught my eye on the brush is not only the bevel cut, which is hard to find in paint brushes, but also the thickness of the brush, which means it "loads" (varnish) quicker, and the load stays further down the bristles, making it easier (and more thorough) to clean. I tried this brush with some waterborne vanish and loved how the thin bristles lay the varnish out, smooth and even, and for the final sweeps, a very nice even layering.
If you use Polys and Varnishes, you NEED a good quality paint brush and if you are using foam brushes, you are likely getting bubbles in your finished work ... quit using them because most people try to use them like a paintbrush which ends up getting tons of bubbles on the surface and making a mess of your finish. Get yourself a GOOD, fine bristle, paintbrush and watch how easily a good finish can be applied. #shorts

Important News from Colin Knecht about WoodWorkWeb!
Due to new circumstances, changes are coming from Colin Knecht and the Woodworkweb woodworking channel which will mean, among other things a bit of a drop in the number of videos being released and a bit of a change in video topics with a bit of a leaning away from woodworking Tips, Tricks, and Jigs and closer alignment with some larger woodworking builds, and things that interest Colin more and are more closely related to building with wood than simply talking about tools, techniques and ideas and probably some travel involved for Colin, so make sure you subscribe because he may be headed for a visit in your neighborhood ...

Unlock Your Woodworking with These New Tools!
Everyone loves new woodworking tools, even if they are small items, they can still be invaluable in the workshop, like the mini Angle Brackets I just bought, these should be perfect for small box making by helping to align the sides making quicker and more accurately wooden boxes, the quality of paintbrush you use can make a huge difference on the kind of finish end up with especially if you use Polyurethane, Varnish in either water-borne or oil base and some of the newer synthetics are at least as good as the old natural bristles that are now hard or impossible to find; and I finally got around to replacing my old broken Mini Butane Torch, which realized I use a lot in the workshop because after it broke, I realized how much I miss it ... and the new one has an "air collar" which means I can adjust the flame even more ... lots of new woodworking hand tools to try out.

Transform Your Tools Instantly! Plasti Dip Revealed
I can't believe how many tools and tool handles and BLACK, and if you haven't noted, black does not stand out, it tends to blend in with other tools making black-handled tools harder to see. I purchased "Plasti Dip" a thick liquid plastic for specifically coating tool handles and other items like the DRILL PRESS KEY, which does not always get put back on the magnet of the drill press magnet column. I decided coating it RED with a plastic covering would be one way of helping the tool to stand out more and be easier to see, and USE ... but after I coated it, I was so impressed I decided to try other tools with black handles, like my wood router wrenches, the special screwdriver for my Incra Mitre gauge, some of the knobs for my wood jigs and even the handle for the fence on my table saw, WOW, what a difference it makes, all these tools now stand out because they are RED and not black. They are easier to use with better gripping plastic-like coating. So, in this video, we look at how to use Plasti Dip for tool handles to give them an easy-to-see rubber grip.
