An eruption just started near the crater from the 2021 eruption in Geldingadalir, Iceland, like I had promised, I was close by and this is some of the first footage shot from there but it was windy so I didn't have full range with the drone so I'm leaving a link to close ups images shot from a plane just now. And live cam links of course. The fissure is longer than then opened up during the 2021 eruption but this is so new that I'm not sure if the area will be evacuated, but it's possible until the scientists see how this plays out, like with gas pollution, and in case the issuer will extend to both or south. As it looks not, the lava will flow to Merardalur valley so this looks like the best case scanner now. A volcano has erupted on a mountain near Iceland's capital Reykjavik after days of rising earthquake activity in the area, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said on Wednesday.

New (*Meradalir) fissure opens up near Fagradalsfjall volcano about 20 miles (about 32km) south of Reykjavik. This occurred around 1pm on the 3rd (local time) and has continued and is bigger then the previous one. It will change in a week and for how long it will erupt is anyone's guess. The Fagradalsfjall volcano stopped some 8 months ago and the fault line and lava is expected to flow either north or east, but we shall have to see how this develops. e shall have to see if a volcano forms and what they will call it. *The (Meradalir) fissure (volcanic) lava flow is an unofficial name, I just using for now (as it has been used online elsewhere by others (including some geologists). I was lucky enough to start watching this (live cams they have there, just after the fissure opened (a few hours later) after the region experienced 10,000 tremors and then the fissure opened up.

Fagradalsfjall, which is just 20 miles outside of the capital, began erupting on Wednesday - just eight months after its last eruption ended. The volcanic event reportedly occurred at Fagradalsfjall’s Geldingadalir volcano in the largely uninhabited Reykjanes peninsula, near the legendary Blue Lagoon geothermal spa in the country’s capital of Reykjavík. An accompanying livestream by the scientists depicts a 100-meter fissure in the black ground, where magma is burbling to the surface like something from Mordor in “The Lord of the Rings.” Fortunately, at present, no lives appeared to be endangered by the lava flow, according to Iceland’s Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management. The country’s main transportation hub, Keflavík Airport, was briefly alerted, as is standard procedure during eruptions. However, the facility didn’t cancel any flights and operations are continuing to run on schedule. Hjorleifsson predicts that the eruption will have little effect on air traffic, as it was a fissure eruption, in which lava flows instead of explodes. This is generally less dangerous than the bombastic central variety, in which ejection of debris and lava flows from a central point, such as the ash-riddled 2020 eruption of the glaciated Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Following the latter catastrophe, more than 100,000 flights were grounded, while hundreds of Icelanders were forced to evacuate their homes, Reuters reported. Police in Iceland have arrested four people in connection with preparations for a suspected terrorist attack. It is thought to be the first time terror arrests have been made in the country. The four men are said to be in their 20s and were arrested in a suburb of Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital.
