Fusion of Old and New Architecture expressed in Contemporary Eaves
Art Complex in Pyeung Chang Dong, Seoul, South Korea. The main concept of our design is the fusion of the old and new. From the material used to the form of mass, its outcome expresses the work of art, the contemporary architecture through traditional Korean architecture metaphorically. In addition, open terraces of each function make the building more vibrant and accessible.
For more ingo, please visit: http://www.theeae.com
The materials used for the building façade are copper and silver perforated metal panels, which go under different finishing. Some copper panels have a rust finish, demonstrating the past times; on the other hand, the smooth and clean silver metal panels represent present. We will be using refurbished recycled metals and new ones, giving a more varied and random patterns for the façade design. This might be an effective promotion of environmental issues. Moreover this building itself will be educational and contributive to the environment.
The building is composed of two main types of mass and shape: the ones covered with copper panels are mimicking traditional Korean eaves, smooth curves with elegant shapes, creating a contemporary mass; on the other hand, the silver ones have boxy mass, giving a sense of modernism.
The masses interlocked, creating a complex, showing a variation of spatial quality and ideas. This is a fusion of old and new. We hope to remind people about the tradition while promoting new creations, encouraging the art center to grow in different perspectives.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art LACMA Alternative of Peter Zumthor's
Location : Los Angeles, CA, USA
Title : HILLACMA for Lacma not LACKma
Communities often comprise a diverse mix of individuals from different districts, towns or cities, considered collectively, especially in the context of social values and responsibilities or a society at large. The built form we offer is a stage for these communities to visit and use, thus foster a sense of belonging through social interactions and communication. Ultimately, it will be a new cultural platform that connects people from different walks of life.
Designing a public building allows us to explore ideas to benefit the community in the most efficient way. The existing LACMA has its value as it has served the public for over 4~5 decades despite its current outworn functionality. The experience and memories it has offered to communities are undeniably invaluable. Regarding this, the old surpasses the new – what takes us into the new development may be too luxurious or too disrespectful to the past. However, in light of the potential improvements of the current site, a transformation is deemed necessary to enhance the function of the museum in the future. In consideration of the communities’ needs on this matter, we believe the emphasis on preserving the historical value should give a way to future-proof architecture. Our aspiration that the newborn will create a joy over the old has to be proved through the outcome of the design. Furthermore, communities should be encouraged to be open to the transformation and possible changes to their daily lives.
Weighing heavily on the circumstances above, our vision assures us to move forward in creation of the new development to make better communication and interactions with the surroundings – Hancock Park, Wilshire Blvd. and associated outdoor corridors. All in all, we believe our newly proposed development will open an unprecedented cultural platform offering the best use of the museum, as well as public space altogether.

Library design proposal for Gwang Ju City main library
Library design proposal for international design competition.
Location : Gwang Ju, South Korea
Title : City Main Library G.J.
Architect : TheeAe LTD.
The city of Gwangju is the sixth largest city in South Korea. The city is a transitional zone between the west flatland and east mountainous area. By its locational and regional aspects, the city has gone through many historical events along with the rapid development of the country. As the development has started from late 1900’s until now, the modern architecture has been placed past 30 years. Hence, the urban fabric present is relatively modernistic, as it also embraces a range from small scale to large scale housings; public and private architecture; especially vast natural farmlands and mountains around. Among this context, the new downtown area as a part of the competition is centered on how nature of the city is able to offer a new story on this urban framework.
The architecture of this urban area is well clothed by the mix of modernistic and traditional form of architecture. Pitched and sloped roofs, siding panels, stone finished wall, red bricked façade, painted housing complex wall, etc. Since the new city main library is an institutional structure that is highly valued by the local community, it is a prominent location next to the main spatial landmark, Sangmu Sculpture Park, and Sangmu Citizen Park, and 5.18 Freedom Park. Its location is at the intersection of Cheon Byeun Jwaharo and Sangmu Nuriro. This adds extra importance on the new City Main Library building which will be seen by any passing through the city passengers.
The strong feature of the site is located at the front of Cheon Byeun Juaharo, a wide pedestrian zone defined by Gwangju Creek. This urban feature is the major importance for the composition concept, because it belongs to the pedestrian network that links surrounding building areas and acts as a gathering place for the new downtown of the city of Gwangju and the new library. Therefore, it becomes an opportunity for the new library building to bring this open public square in front, by fostering most of activities, events and exhibitions to communities.

A museum design : Design process revealed through writing on landscape
Location : Song Do, Incheon, South Korea
Title : Writings on Landscape - Museum of World Writing
“Writing is a medium of human communication that represents language and emotion with signs and symbols. In most languages, writing is a complement to speech or spoken languages. Writing is not a language, but a tool developed by human society.” It is a great task to trace back cultural heritages through studying and developing forms and styles from various ethnic backgrounds of each different writings and writing systems. In this immediate understanding on the matter, we are overwhelmed by the fact the expression on the museum of world writing can be too vast and tremendous. However, creating the architectural form for the Museum of World Writing will be very much rewarding historical event, if we can express, as architects, into a form of conglomeration that brings the sense and beauty of the world writings.
The location of the museum is centered at ‘The Central Park’ of the city and it provides a place for people around to relax and enjoy open green nature of the town and sceneries around the city to view from their high-rise residential or office towers. By the given context, we intended to use the landscape as a major part of the design element and wanted the museum building a simple form to reflect the surroundings together with characteristics of writings and their various systems. Hence, we simply start to draw our imagination on the site as if we are writing various written characters from countries in the world on a notebook.
Parts of written characters on landscape are vertically erected to be viewed from the horizontal landscape by preserving parking space underground to minimize waterproof issues due to excavation on the reclaimed land. Vertically standing letters are engraved to the wall. Two main rectangular exhibition areas are inter-connected through this wall which becomes bridges of two buildings; thus, they become transitional space from A to B exhibition, library to cafeteria, office to canteen, etc. giving various and continuous exhibition space in sequential circulation.
Façade materials, reflective corrugate metals, are chosen to reflect surroundings to be well mingled into the landscape. The existence of the form is invisible into the nature, yet it stands still. At the end, The architecture of the world writing is concluded as an art of conglomeration implicitly in landscape and explicitly behind built facade.

Mist and mythology are combined to create cool a neighbor in a city of Abu Dhabi
Location : Hypothetical location in Abu Dhabi
Title : Cool Abu Dhabi Challenge - Misthology
Heat is transferred between two substances at different temperatures, from the substance of higher temperature to the other of lower temperature. Heat transfer occurs by three mechanisms: conduction, convection, and radiation.• Conduction is the transfer of heat between atoms and molecules in direct contact• Convection is the transfer of heat by movement of the heated substance itself, such as by currents in a fluid• Radiation is the transfer of heat by way of electromagnetic waves. In these mechanisms, heat transfers occur through surfaces of street pavement, building façade, cars and other unknown objects from outdoor environment. To alleviate the effect of heat transfers to the environment, it is crucial to make an effort to impede such transfer process. Hence, not only shall we make sure that the new installation should not be the medium which causes heat transfer from the material itself, but also it shall create a cooling element to resist the stagnant heat from surroundings. Based on materials characteristics, the most effective substances to minimize heat generations are water and green plants. These materials could set off the standard heat gains to the lowest point. In order to utilize these materials, we designed a green wall system on one façade and waterfall system to the other. As green wall itself blocks heat gain, waterfall system will be constantly circulated in order to reduce heat transfer. Fallen water basically enters the tank underground and passes through refrigerant cooling and filtration system. This cooled and filtered water (drinkable water) shall be used for the waterfall. In addition, we employ a mist cooling system to enhance the cooling effect in a height of 3 to 4.5 meter above the ground. Also, canopies are added to block sunlight. While waterfall and green wall system would slow down heat transfers, the mist cooling system will extensively add cooling elements to the surroundings. On top of these functional strategies, most importantly, the installation shall offer a unique feature to Abu Dhabi. A tower to include the functions mentioned above can be duplicated or multiplied to create a monumental form that expresses, in this given site, mountains above clouds which we refer as a mythological image of coolness. At the end, we believe, the final installation would be an epic which generates a functional and aesthetic cooling system to the city.

Don't rely on the architect alone. Or as this small house was failed, so is yours.
The video basically tells you to hire an architect AFTER you prepare well enough. Dont simply rely on him. Otherwise, as this small house design was failed, so is yours.
In summary, it depicts the story of how well known / famous architect also can make mistake to fail the dream home. It includes story from the conception of the house design to the completion with house tour. After watching till the end, you will see what happened after years of completion. Simply a small house was built upon the ample land. The architect used earth brick to make the entire design special but it fell into a disastrous one outwardly. Furthermore, the interior space was not well thoughtfully designed to embrace the needs that the clients would need in the future.
Must watch till the end.

Vertical Forest human friendly (Milan apt.) VS mosquito friendly (Chengdu apt).
Vertical Forest - apartment, human friendly in Milan apartment VS mosquito friendly in Chengdu apartment.
Apartment in Cheung Du, southwestern China’s Sichuan province, promising “Vertical Forest” overrun by plants and invaded by mosquito infestation.
An experimental green housing project in a Chinese megacity promised prospective residents life in a "vertical forest", with manicured gardens on every balcony. All 826 apartments were sold out by April this year, according to the project's estate agent, but instead of a modern eco-paradise, the towers look like the set of a desolate, post-apocalyptic film.
The problem was the mosquitoes, they love the plants too.

2370sf 2bed 2bath Vacation home - Circular house on cliff in CA inspired by Apple’s headquarter
We designed this house as a vacation home (weekend home). Basis of the concept of the house is inspired by Apple’s headquarter as it offers a continuous view toward green nature like this house offers the view toward the ocean.
The site is located alongside the ocean of Los Angeles residential area. From this general location, we wanted to create unique home for the prospective owner. Especially, the house on cliff can offer extensive view toward the ocean in all areas, living room, bathroom, closet, kitchen and dining room of the house.
Facing to this sea, backside of the house is residential area that would not differ from ordinary house in the town. Hence, we push the house to the one level below ground with the circular courtyard in the middle. We wanted to avoid common, ordinary view of the backside of the house, and rather wanted to create privately separated scenes through the courtyard with green nature and facing to the front that the ocean can offer.
Hence, the house offers unique experience through this sunken green courtyard sloped to be looking like a hill and also the open view toward the ocean. We believe what make this house special is from these sceneries toward nature.
Its total area (at basement) is 220sm ( 2,368sf), and it is located near the beach of Los Angeles, California. The materials of design are simply natural stone, concrete polished finish and glass. We tried to keep as minimalist as possible not to intervene the beauty of nature with other colors tones.

1720sf 2bed 2bath Forest House in the urban residential area in Los Angeles, CA
The Forest House, a single detached home, is designed in the urban residential area in Los Angeles, California. (rendered by Enscape)
We love a simple design. When architects try to make complicated design plans, in many cases it becomes user-unfriendly. Thus, it will cause more trouble during the construction. Not only will it increase the cost of the construction, but also, it gets more tendencies to draw problems as you may find from this video. https://youtu.be/l3ff2zHPfSM
Nonetheless, architects need to make things harder and more difficult to earn their achievement noticeable and it will show off to others of how much they are smarter enough to make things that normal people would’ve never thought of. By doing so, they can attract the rich who admires unique design to value their properties as high as they seem to be.
No matter what, we are architects and we are in the same dilemma. At least, through this Youtube channel, we want to do things without any outside influences. Hence, for our house designs here in this channel are to be designed without any interventions of how much we need to show off. We try our best to design based on what we feel about a good house for us to live in.
This Forest House is also an example of how we design if it’s our own home. We love to live in a high ceiling house to have natural ventilation, enough sunlight but not making the house hot or cold. Warm and dark enough to take a rest and feel relaxed while staying home. Therefore, we thought of a house, for this time, that may look like a home in a forest as thinking of what if we design one in this urban residential area.
The Forest House is in total 1,722sf (160sm) as a duplex home with 2bedrooms and 1.5 bathroom. Please have a look to find more information throughout the video. We hope you to enjoy what we have designed for ourselves which may fit for your home as well.

458sf loft home – Cube 5x5x5 tiny small house design inspired by Transformers Movie lightly
This loft small house is a cube sized 5x5x5m and total gross floor area is 458sf.
It's not a design with a big plan. We simply enjoyed designing a house with a cube as an inspiration based on the moving parts of the robot in the movie, Transformers. Based on the exterior, and interior design that can be constructed in a practical and inexpensive way, we tried to find a suitable location for this house by the river.
The interior didn't take into account the big plan either. We finished it with a white paint rather than a high-end decoration and built-in cabinet, and placed loose furniture to match floor wood color. In many cases, it seems rather natural by doing so. Am I the only one who feels more humanity in that?
We have a basic idea that the value of an architectural space should start with the happiness of the users, and I tend to put a little more emphasis on convenience and efficiency, since we didn't have much obsession with interior design for this house project. Of course, if you are designing a five-star hotel, you will have to attach unnecessary decorations to fit the constraints that cannot be ignored.

1,190sf 2 story small futuristic contemporary house design inspired by Transformers Movie moderately
If the design of the previous house, ‘Cube’ was to use the feelings of the movie Transformer lightly, this time, we used it moderately employing the sense of Transformer mechanism with multifaceted forms. It becomes 2 story small futuristic contemporary house.
In a sense, this house outlook may get you feel a bit uncomfortable with sharp edges, but I think that the aesthetic beauty from dynamic angles through aluminum panels on the exterior seems to create curiosity to make you want to visit at least once.
The house is relatively small with the size of 1,190sf in total for two floors. 1st floor area includes a bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining area. Thus, there is a guest toilet with laundry room. On the second floor, I designed the master bedroom and balcony. Especially the large pane of glass in bedroom would offer you extensive view of nature.
As it is a house that exudes the feeling of futuristic, I hope it would fit well as a unique vacation home.
Please enjoy having virtual tour.
