AK NEWS Report on Indian Election 2024
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party has suffered a devastating blow.
Though Modi is claiming victory, his party is seeing major losses in the country's general election.
Some are touting his opposition's unexpected leads as a win for democracy.
For a decade, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held a decisive grip on his country's politics.
But as election results rolled in Tuesday, it appeared Modi's grip may be slipping.
Modi, who leads India's Bharatiya Janata Party, is claiming victory for a historic third term as the country's prime minister. But even though Modi will hold on to his position, his party didn't do as well as he'd predicted.
India wrapped up counting the votes in its general election, and Modi's party lost its majority in Parliament. That's a big blow to Modi, whose party was long expected to win a majority.
Now, he'll have to gather enough allies to form a government.
The BJP's main opposition party, the Indian National Congress, performed better than expected.
The Indian National Congress had set a goal to double its 52 seats in Parliament, and as of Tuesday evening Eastern Time, it had won 99 seats.
In an election that saw record voter turnout — with 642 million people voting, according to Al Jazeera, in the seven-phase process that began in April and ended Saturday — the surprise results indicate that voters' trust in the BJP is waning.
The BJP's Hindutva ideology promotes Hindu nationalism, which critics have accused of stoking anti-Muslim hate and right-wing extremism.
Modi has even accused the Congress party of plotting to redistribute India's wealth to the Muslim minority, Business Insider previously reported. Modi has denied targeting the Muslim minority to win the favor of the Hindu majority, Reuters reported.
Though Modi is still popular across India, some see him as an authoritarian leader, and his opponents on Tuesday called signs of his fading power a victory for democracy.
The president of the Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, called the election a "moral and political loss" for Modi, PBS NewsHour reported. "This is public's victory and a win for democracy," he added.
Raghuram Rajan, a former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, echoed Kharge's sentiment in a LinkedIn post.
"The Indian voter has spoken," Rajan wrote. "And what a wise decision! This is a win for Indian democracy and a win for the Indian economy. Regardless of what happens over the next few days, we will have a strong opposition that forces the government to change course."

Russia threatening participants of Peace Summit, but it will not be able to disrupt it
Russia threatening participants of Peace Summit, but it will not be able to disrupt it – Says by Zelenskyy
The Russian Federation is threatening participants of the Peace Summit with destabilization; however, this will not prevent the summit from taking place, states Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"We are preparing our diplomatic responses to Russia's attempts to undermine the Peace Summit, which will start in two weeks. Russia will not be able to disrupt the summit, despite its efforts. It is pressuring leaders and openly threatening various countries with destabilization," the head of state said.
He emphasized that these actions by the Russian Federation are a consequence of the world giving the terrorist state too much time.
"Unfortunately, evil knows how to adapt and is now using its resources to divide the world and prevent Russia from being forced into peace. But we already have nearly one hundred countries and international organizations joining the global efforts," the president stressed.

A Jewish school is targeted by gunfire
News from Montreal where a Jewish school is targeted by gunfire
Montreal police say a Jewish school in the borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce has been hit by at least one bullet.
Const. Véronique Dubuc, a spokesperson for Montreal police, said investigators were called Wednesday in the late afternoon about a possible shooting outside a school on Hillsdale Road near Van Horne Avenue.
Police were on the scene by 6 p.m., established a perimeter, and determined that at least one bullet struck the school, she said. Police are still in the early stages of the investigation.
Politicians and Jewish advocacy groups were quick to respond to the incident.
Yair Szlak, president and CEO of Federation CJA, and Eta Yudin, vice-president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs Quebec, issued a joint statement Wednesday, saying the shooting took place sometime in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday.
"We have had enough. Another Jewish school shooting in Canada," the statement says.
"Once again, and thankfully, no one was inside the building. We know that when decisive action is taken by leadership at the municipal level, this can end."
The statement calls for an end to intimidation and fear-mongering in Montreal and calls on all citizens to use their voices to end the hatred.
The Montreal police service has assured, as a precaution, there will be increased presence in front of all Jewish schools in the city, the statement says.
Outremont MP Rachel Bendayan said on X, formerly Twitter, that she spoke with school administrators and community leaders about the incident.
"This must stop. This is not who we are," she wrote.
Last week, Montreal police announced they arrested a suspect in connection with shots fired at a Jewish school back in November. Two Jewish schools were shot at in November

IHOP is opening in Mississauga
One of the world’s biggest breakfast chains IHOP now open in Mississauga
The city’s Erin Mills neighbourhood is now home to one of the world’s best-known breakfast chains after months of eager anticipation from diners who wondered when the location, which had been undergoing renovations for some time, would finally open its doors.
According to IHOP (yes, the famous International House of Pancakes that you had to travel to Brampton or Niagara Falls to enjoy), it is now open in the old Panera Bread location at 2575 Eglinton Ave W., just across from the Erin Mills Town Centre parking lot.
The Panera Bread location closed its doors for good about three years ago.
The Panera Bread location closed its doors for good about three years ago.
Much like the Brampton location, this one also serves Halal options.
The restaurant is known for serving a variety of breakfast dishes, including pancakes (think blueberry, Mexican tres leches, cupcake, New York cheesecake, strawberry banana and other varieties), waffles, eggs Benedict, omelettes, crepes, sandwiches and shredded hash browns.
The expansion of IHOP into Mississauga isn’t surprising, as the brand has been growing its Canadian footprint for some time now. Recently, the Toronto-based K2 Group of companies announced plans to open at least five IHOP restaurants across southern Ontario. IHOP opened a location in Brampton in 2022.
According to an earlier news release, the Canadian expansion is part of a non-traditional development agreement with Dine Brands International, a full-service dining company that franchises IHOP and Applebee’s restaurants in the country.

369 stolen vehicles from Ontario worth $33M recovered, many at Port of Montreal
HELLO ,WELCOME TO AK NEWS
369 stolen vehicles from Ontario worth $33M recovered, many at Port of Montreal
Peel Regional Police say hundreds of vehicles worth $33.2 million have been recovered in a major auto theft investigation — with 37 containers worth of cars found at the Port of Montreal.
Det. Greg O’Connor told reporters on Monday that in October 2023 police began a large-scale investigation called Project Odyssey after receiving information about stolen vehicles within a shipping area in Brampton, Ont.
Officers first recovered two stolen vehicles there, O’Connor said. In December 2023, he said police were informed about a transport truck loaded with stolen vehicles in Mississauga. Police were able to intercept that truck in Brampton and the driver was arrested.
A BMW X6 valued at $110,000 and a 2023 Ford F150 valued at $86,000 were recovered, O’Connor said.
O’Connor alleges a local trucking company run by a family was identified as being “responsible for facilitating and loading the transportation of motor vehicles.”
“These individuals were facilitating the shipment of stolen vehicles through local intermodal hubs within the Greater Toronto Area and travelling the (Highway) 401 corridor to the Port of Montreal,” O’Connor said.
The vehicles were intended to be exported to the ports in the United Arab Emirates and the Port of Oman.”
O’Connor says police believe the trucking company owners, workers and operators were “fully aware and complicit” in the shipping of stolen vehicles.
Investigators then travelled to the Port of Montreal, where 37 containers were opened with the help of the Port Authority and Canada Border Services Agency.
Police said 114 stolen vehicles were recovered at the Port of Montreal as well as three transport trucks and two stolen Bobcats.
Another 255 stolen vehicles were recovered throughout Peel Region, police said.
In total, through Project Odyssey, O’Connor said 369 vehicles worth $33.2 million were recovered before they were “destined out of the country.”
Sixteen people have been arrested and charged with 322 auto-related offences. However, police have identified 26 suspects in connection to the investigation. There are 10 outstanding suspects on arrest warrants.
Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said more than half of the accused were already on a former release, or bail, for auto theft-related offences.
“This is a highly-orchestrated criminal operation where several individuals were responsible for stealing the vehicles through various methods, many of which we have come to know, that include violent carjacking rings as well as other methods of stealing vehicles for the intention of shipping overseas
