The NBA Championship went to the Philadelphia 76ers, who beat the L.A. Lakers. The Kentucky Derby winner was Sunny's Halo (1980-2003). The New York Islanders defeated Edmonton to secure themselves the Stanley Cup. NCAA Basketball Championship: N. C. State beat Houston. NCAA Football Championship: Miami, FL (11-1-0). WWF Champion: The Iron Shiek (1942-2023). The Iron Shiek defeated Bob Backlund on December 26th and held the belt until he famously lost it to Hulk Hogan on January 23rd, 1984, thus began "Hulkamania." The video game "Mario Bros." was first released as a Nintendo arcade game in Japan. On Feb 28th, more than 125 million viewers tuned in to watch the final episode of M*A*S*H. The world population was 4.72 billion (in 2023 it's 8 billion!). The US population was 233.8 million (in 2023 it's nearing 340 million!) Wearing a seatbelt in the UK became mandatory.
