Job was, unquestionably, in severe pain; however, he had not yet given full vent to his despair and frustration. Now, he could no longer restrain himself. He focused on his physical suffering, on the terrible symptoms of his dreadful disease. His pain was so great he could not sleep. He was hopeless and felt his life slipping away. Dr. David N. Have you ever felt completely hopeless, so desperate that you longed for death? Have you ever felt abandoned, as though everyone had forsaken you and no one cared, not even God? Have you ever found yourself accused of something you did not do, but no matter what you claimed, you were found guilty and condemned? And although you had done nothing wrong, everyone seemed to stand against you? Dr. David Smeltz Th.D.

False accusations can lead to some of the most hurtful experiences of life. They can damage and even destroy people and nations. For example, have you ever been falsely accused of misbehavior…? Job had just been falsely accused by one of his closest friends—accused of hiding a secret sin so evil that God was having to severely punish him. Job's friends had sat quietly with him for seven days and seven nights, mourning and identifying with his suffering. They wanted to show how much they cared for their dear friend. For seven long days no one had spoken a word; but after seven days, Job finally broke the silence and expressed his overwhelming grief. Imagine how hard it was for these three men to see their friend suffer so terribly. No doubt, they were bewildered and perhaps overwhelmed—just as Job was. Even so, as they sat with Job during those seven long, drawn-out days, they also began to wonder why their friend was suffering so much. Why would God allow him to go through so much pain? During the seven days of silence, each of them came to his own conclusions about why Job was suffering. Collectively, though, Job's friends believed that…

Bildad's response to Job. Most people—believers and nonbelievers alike—think they are fairly good people. They may do a few things wrong here and there, but in general they consider themselves good people. They reason, then, that good things should happen to them, at least for the most part. They may suffer some hardships along the way, accepting that difficulties and problems are a part of life. Nevertheless, their belief is that they deserve good things. This reasoning, like the arguments of Job's friends, is based on the idea of divine justice or retribution, that is, that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people. The problem with this thinking is simply that it does not hold up under close scrutiny. It is not true for everyone; nor is it true all the time.
