Job's friends had sat quietly with him for seven days and seven nights, mourning and identifying with his suffering. They wanted to show how much they cared for their dear friend. For seven long days no one had spoken a word; but after seven days, Job finally broke the silence and expressed his overwhelming grief. Imagine how hard it was for these three men to see their friend suffer so terribly. No doubt, they were bewildered and perhaps overwhelmed—just as Job was. Even so, as they sat with Job during those seven long, drawn-out days, they also began to wonder why their friend was suffering so much. Why would God allow him to go through so much pain?
