Tony Matthews: The Thoughts of Scrapin' Suzy
The Suzuki Association of the Americas aspires to improve the quality of life in the Americas through Suzuki education. They seek to create a learning community, which embraces excellence and nurtures the human spirit.
They provide a means whereby beginners can learn the violin without having to worry about reading music at an early age. One of those pieces, in the first book, is the Perpetual Motion; a fine piece for using all four fingers on the D string.
However, after seeing a performance of it, my heart went out to the pianist who had nothing to do but play a sotto-voci, tonic-dominant oomp-pah accompaniment for 3 or 4 minutes straight....
I cracked and wrote this.
Performance Notes
This piece would work as a stand-alone Violin and Piano comedy piece, as the piece works as is. However, in performance subtle, physical indications could be enacted to indicate the thoughts and emotions of the players.
I see no reason why there shouldn’t be a third person, to narrate the thoughts.

Tony Matthews: Violin Sonata No 3
A dramatic, passionate work, five years and two countries in the making.

11:00 3rd Movement - Romance (Andante appassionato)

Tony Matthews: Tuba Train (for Euphonium or Tuba & Piano)
Originally written for the Tuba, this work has been performed far more on the Euphonium.
The movements of this work are all self-contained and work when played as stand-alone pieces. However, the real power of this music comes when the work in played as whole and the train of thought, that presents itself, is taken through worlds of turmoil, despair, love and finally, joy.
The solo part can be performed on both Euphonium or Tuba. Where the notes are out of range or tricky for the Euphonium, the Tuba variation is shown as an ossia in the full score. There are full parts for both instruments.
There are six movements
0:00 1. Dreams: More of a nightmare actually.
2:51 2. Chase: Fast and Frenetic. A wild flight leading to a frightening end.
4:47 3. Wasteland: A barren land, a void of eerie winds and sounds.
6:20 4. Ballad: A pop ballad with a twist.
10:26 5. Waltz: A light romp, with a twinkle in the eye and absolutely no wrong notes.
12:40 6. Speed Wrap: A fast, lively finale, where previous themes help to wrap up the whole work up to make an exciting and exhilarating conclusion.

Tony Matthews - Flute Sonata No.1 (Fly Now, Strong and Free)
A substantial work for Flute and Piano that travels from a wildness to beauty, from beauty to drama to peace.
The "Fly Now, Strong and free", subtitle is from a song that fits the free, wild and abandoned mood of the whole work perfectly, and it taken from a love song between a father his son, from our musical "Theseus and the Minotaur".
1: 0:00 Presto
2: 6:04 Andante expressivo, Allegro expressivo
3: 11:57 Allegro con brio

Tony Matthews: Birthday Thoughts
Seven short piano pieces, all derived from the "Good Morning to All", written by Patty and Mildred J. Hill, in 1893. Many years later, the lyrics were changed to "Happy Birthday etc.", and the rest is history.
Sometimes obvious, sometimes not:
Happy Birthday’s chopped a lot!
All the main themes are derived from parts of that tune. In short, it's in there a lot more than you think. Oh, by the way, there are a couple of guest tunes as well.
0:04 Hammerversary
0:57 Night Before
2:44 La Folia's turning 40 experience at St Anthony's Birthday!
3:42 18th Century Disco
4:05 Bygone Anniversaries
5:24 All together Now?
6:06 Three Old Friends Fugueing it.

Tony Matthews - Twinkle Variations for Orchestra
This is the work that won the UK Songwriting Contest in 2008. I have always been fascinated how different composers have made use of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".
This piece was commissioned by "The Learning Orchestra", an amateur orchestra, which tackles "proper" works such as Beethoven Symphonies. The orchestra premiered the work in September 2007.
Score is available on

It has since be performed by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and also by the Phoenix Symphony and, I believe, others as well.

Isaac Albéniz - Asturias (Leyenda) arr. Tony Matthews
Asturias (Leyenda) "Legend" was written by the Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909).
The piece was originally written for the piano and set in the key of G minor. It was first published in 1892 as the prelude of a three-movement set entitled Chants d'Espagne. The version here, is derived from it's later publication, as part of the "Suite Espagnole" Op 47 No.5

Beethoven - Choral Fantasia Op80 : Arr. Tony Matthews - Piano Quintet
This Fantasia (or Fantasy) for piano, vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra, Op. 80, was composed in 1808 by a 38 year old Beethoven.
The Fantasia was hastily written to serve as the grand finale for a (personal) benefit concert on the 22nd December 1808 which included premiers of his 5th and 6th symphonies, the 4th Piano concerto and the Mass in C. Beethoven took the opportunity to use the forces available to make this comparatively short piece for piano, orchestra, and a choral finale where he, the soloist, could showoff just how good he was.
Sadly, this work is seldom performed because who wants to hire a choir for just 2 minutes of music and an orchestra for not that much longer. This quintet version addresses this by allowing a much smaller ensemble to enjoy performing this utterly delightful work.
The piano part is basically what Beethoven wrote, however it has been suitably modified in places to allow the piano to fit into the overall ensemble.

Schubert Trout Quintet. Arr. Std. Piano Quintet
An arrangement for the usual Piano Quintet line-up of the popular Trout Quintet, this being the fourth movement of the Piano Quintet in A, D.667, Op.114.
Why the unusual arrangement in the first place?
Rather than the usual piano quintet lineup of piano and string quartet, the Trout Quintet was written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. The composer Johann Hummel had rearranged his own Septet for this combination and the Trout was written for the group of musicians coming to play Hummel's work.

Tony Matthews - Passacaglic Conversations for Solo Percussion and Orchestra
A Short Percussion Concerto. A dialogue between the un-pitched percussion soloist at the pitched orchestra. A kind of pitched battle...
Work was premiered at "All Ears Festival" in London, UK on the 27th September 2008
Soloist : Gerard Rundle
Orchestra: London Contemporary Chamber Orchestra
Conductor: Alan Taylor
Originally written, by request, for solo percussion. That version proved impossible to play. However, it seemed a shame to waste the material, so, this version was born. The melodic parts (vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel) were used as the basis of the orchestral parts.
