At 6 months Zip and Zap are under control on lead and I have basic control over direction of livestock.

Zip and Zap learning to yield to the handler on stock, a major component to admission into The Society. At this point I only try to physically control direction. I don't worry about puppy enthusiasm because they are just learning to manage stock. The more they can learn on their own the better. My operation requires a strong dog so I don't ask for any distance off stock until much later in training. I don't add verbal commands until the pup is comfortable working stock and a bit more deliberate on sheep. I'll build on what they do naturally. The really really boring stuff that I can't live without is teaching a dog to stay put. A dog is worthless when he's tied to a fence or boxed in a truck so I teach mine to stay somewhere when I tell them regardless of what's going on around them. It all starts here. I start by putting them on something easy to hop on or off of and just keep putting back up until they give up and quit jumping off. No corrections or fussing at first, just keep putting them back till they get the idea. It'll take a while. I've been called pathetically patient. I use pressure and release to train because I've never seen a food reward more attractive than a squealing pig or a goat kid. But here's a challenge. If a trainer out there finds the reward that a dog will choose over a thrashing squealing goat kid I'll personally elevate your status in the Texas Urban Ranch Dog Society to MASTER BAITER.

This exercise teaches the dog to yield to pressure from the handler. Note; NO LIVESTOCK NEEDED FOR THIS EXERCISE, the forward motion is constant, the pup is allowed a clear path to walk after each yield, no voice commands are used.
