CONTINUING DANGEROUS CONDITIONS AT BEACH/1ST STREET
Conditions as of 5-18-24. The barricades have been removed as of 5-21-24 but bollards are still in the street causing a road hazard for cars/trucks AND bicycles. These corner refuge islands are NOT a good idea for Fort Worth. Hopefully this project will go back to using the less invasive, safer bike corners that were installed on 7th Street.

Bicycle "Corner Refuge Islands" Create Hazards For Long Trailers
This video clearly shows the traffic hazard created by taking away right turn lanes and giving them to bicycle traffic. This truck is eastbound on E. !st Street and making a right turn onto Beach Street. Even without the traffic cones, trucks will have difficulty negotiating this turn. The white stop line for left turning traffic will have to be moved very far back from the intersection to keep trucks from getting stuck. Moving the stop line for traffic that far back from the intersection makes it much more difficult for Beach northbound cars turning left onto E. 1st Street to estimate the timing to make a turn. This whole problem could be avoided by simply routing the bike traffic up onto the existing curbed corner - freeing up this turn lane for motorized vehicles and giving curbed protection to the bicycles along with easy access to the traffic buttons on the pole.

E. 1st Street Bicycle Lane Solution (Fort Worth, Texas)
Good for cars and bikes! Does not take away the right hand turn lane from auto traffic. Curb protects pedestrians and bicycles. No need for separate island that just causes problems for long trailers/trucks making that turn. Much simpler, Safer for bikes and less expensive.
