How to Test ABS Wheel Speed Sensors for Resistance and AC Voltage
[VIDEOTITLE] - The car in the video is a Saturn Vue 3.5L AWD 2007. However, the procedures shown in the video will apply to almost any vehicle with an ABS system!

[Parts/Tools]

Crocodile clips: https://amzn.to/3qfY9bz
[Symptoms]
ABS warning light will appear. Wheel traction decreases. Brakes locking up when braking in an emergency.
[Getting a diagnosis]
Get a tester that supports ABS codes for YOUR vehicle. All vehicles codes are different. If you have a GM, make sure it supports GM. Check the product website for your exact make and model and year before purchasing. Prices are $100 and up. Standard OBDII scanners WILL NOT work on ABS/AirBag/Transmission codes. The ABS scanner will tell you what the problem is and/or which sensor is faulty. At this stage you should perform visual checks on the sensor. Look for damage to the pins and wiring as these are the first signs of a faulty ABS sensor.
[Possible causes for sensor failure]
- Heat damage
- Contaminants damaging the sensor (oil, grease, dirt etc)
- Damage during replacement of braking components
- An internal short, a cracked housing, or moisture intrusion
[Active vs. Passive Sensors]
If a sensor is only "activated" when a supply voltage is applied and then generates an output signal, this is an "active" sensor.
If a sensor operates without additional supply voltage applied, this is a "passive" sensor.
Both passive (2-wire) and active (2 or 3-wire)
Check owners manual for which you have, a visual check cannot determine a passive sensor.
[Testing]
Most vehicles allow access to the ABS sensor harness inside the cabin, rather than having to jack the car up and take a wheel off. For front sensors, check near the inner strut towers – this is where the ABS sensor wires usually intrude into the engine bay. For rear sensors, under the rear seat cushion or inside the trunk are the common junction points.
Otherwise,
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
Disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector.
[Testing a PASSIVE sensor]
[Resistance] (Passive Only)
Measure the resistance across the wheel speed sensor (signal and ground leads)
Does the resistance measure within the specified range: 800-1700 ohms (If so, good sensor. Check owners manual for your tolerance)
If the resistance is constantly changing or increasing on the meter, the sensor is faulty.
If the multimeter indicates an open (no resistance) or short circuit, this is another indication that the sensor is faulty.
[Testing an ACTIVE sensor]
For this you will need to attach flying leads to the connector pins and then plug the sensor back in to measure the voltage!
At this point the ignition should be turned on so that power is supplied to the ABS system. Rotate the wheel, and if the voltage changes this means that the sensor is working. If the voltage does not change, this suggests that there is a problem with the wiring.
[AC Voltage Test]
Spin the wheel anti-clockwise
Measure the AC voltage across the wheel speed sensor.
Does the AC voltage measure greater than the specified value?
100 mV (Millivolts) / 0.1 volts (If so, good sensor)

----
[Struts 101]
Keeps the vehicle stable with good handling. It dampens suspension movement and maintains good contact with the road. Unlike a shock, a strut is an integral component of the suspension system. You cannot practically drive your vehicle without struts. However, with a shock, you can still drive the car, although, not recommended. (See Shocks vs Struts below for more info)
[Sign of a bad strut]
1. Car is overly bouncy (Do a bounce test to confirm)
2. Uneven tire wear (Usually around the edges). Components such as tie rods can also contribute to uneven tire wear also.
3. Strut is leaking oil / evidence of dried oil / bent assembly (Internal piston and oil inside)
4. Bottoming out/lower clearance. So hitting bumps with the car itself on lower vehicles.
5. Steering wheel can jerk/move/wobble when going over bumps
6. When Accelerating, the front of car goes up OR when braking, front of the car goes down.
TIP: Check the bushings, as it could be worn bushings also!
[Sign of a bad strut - Cautionary things]
Poor handling
body roll
Poor steering
Poor traction with longer stopping distance (Result of (6) above)
Tips:
- Replace in pairs!
- Good to get an alignment afterwards
- Check at 50,000 miles or so.
[Bounce Test]
It's hard to tell with a bounce test, despite the manual stating this, but it does work really well when the struts are really bad.
Push down on the car, it should bounce back up and settle almost immediately. If it carries on bouncing, then they are worn.
[Torque Specs]
TOP nuts/bolts
Tighten the strut to body nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
Stabilizer link
Tighten the nut to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).
Brake hose bracket
Tighten the brake bracket bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
Tighten 2 strut bottom bolts
Tighten the nuts and bolts to 180 N·m (133 lb ft).

Wild Opossum Playing Dead
We found a wild opossum!! Not far from San Francisco! Apparently opossum's can faint for multiple minutes, so it's sometimes hard to know if they are playing dead or they have fainted! It's very rare for an Opossum to have contract, although it does happen! It's also very rare they bite, unless very very frightened! They do hiss a lot and retract their gums! Typically, they just poop themselves, play dead or faint! Curious creatures!
The opossums, also known as possums, are marsupial mammals of the order Didelphimorphia /daɪˌdɛlfᵻˈmɔːrfiə/). The largest order of marsupials in the Western Hemisphere, it comprises 103 or more species in 19 genera. Opossums originated in South America, and entered North America in the Great American Interchange following the connection of the two continents. Their unspecialized biology, flexible diet, and reproductive habits make them successful colonizers and survivors in diverse locations and conditions
