Dear Bands of Seattle, Thank you for all of the fuckin AMAZING MUSIC of the 1990's. This past week, Tuesday Night, I was sitting down at the VFW and talking to my Brothers and Sisters about that era of music. The greats, the fallen, the beauty in its sound, no matter that genre, From Tad to Queensrÿche. We just called it great music. Now that we're in our late 40's-mid-50s, these songs bring me back to Germany as a young married soldier with my gorgeous, then wife driving at 150+ MPH on the autobahn with the speakers cranked to fuckin 11 with the top down, to standing atop some of the most beautiful places in Europe a snowboarder could witness, to standing atop of "Freedom Radio" during Operation Joint Endeavor with the most beautiful sunsets over Sarajevo, Bosnia I'd ever seen to seeing all of these bands at various concert venues and music festivals both in Europe and the United States. Just like it was yesterday. Thank you to the parents of the artists on this show today. And my condolences to the families of Adam Wood, Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, and Layne Staley. MyFox 5 News Reporter Melissa Sander was at the Chateau Elan Winery and Resort doing a live report on a grape-stomping competition. During a demonstration of grape stomping, Ms. Sander attempts to cheat by falsely telling her competitor to stop stomping. Ms. Sander then begins stomping faster. However, her faster stomping causes her to lose her balance, and she falls off a raised platform on to the ground below. A fall on live TV is bad enough, but the audio of this incident is probably what made it so popular online. Ms. Sander is obviously hurt from the fall. The wind was also knocked out of her. Sander’s microphone was still on and captured the sounds of her groans on live TV: “OUCH, OUCH, OUCH! STOP! STOP! I can’t breathe.” It turns out that Ms. Sander suffered fractured bones from the fall and had to spend a few weeks under hospital care. The obvious lesson here is cheaters never win. If you’ve never seen the Great Lakes in Fall and the wood lines around them, you are truly cheating yourself. Autum is also knowing as “The Best of Times”. Lives born from those lost, a world on the verge of hibernation. Yet. With the times coming, the fall of leaves, the joy of family, comradery, brotherhood and sisterhood, reunions, and campfires, the days of the hunt, readying ourselves for the oncoming winter. Because the machine rolls on without you being a part of the equation, to the Army, you're a billet number, an expendable asset to be thrown into the battle to ensure Momma Country will never fall into the hands of those who wish to take her over. Yet, the real enemy to the soldier is the politician. The one who will start the problem you have to go finish. You build these brotherhoods, forged in both beer and battle, training until you can't do it anymore, yet your Brother tells you to never quit and you to him in reverse when the body doesn't wanna play soldier anymore. Bonds built in blood when backs are watched and barfights ensue, bonds built when someone tries to kill him and you in some far-off land the dolt that didn't have the balls to stand post can't even pick out on a map. A shoulder and an ear, you say nothing as you console a loss in silence together, both Brothers in Arms and your family, becomes their family. Eventually, the Army says, "It’s time for you to go someplace else." and you have your orders in hand...to go to another unit. You've being given a special going away party. The night before you're supposed to get on the plane of destiny and fly 1000s of miles from those you love as family. Brothers left behind. As you look over your shoulder, one last time before passing through security, you give a smirk of smile and a wave "Love you, Bros! We will see each other again!" you scream, and they say, "Yeah fuck you too, man! We'll see you when we see you! Love you too, Bro! That one last brave act when you turn, and the emotion rises up into you like a sledgehammer on your heart. You sit waiting for the plane to board, hungover...very...hungover. You put your face into your hands and just...let it all out. Then, a hand on your shoulder, "Hey man. I know what you're going through." as you see another soldier sit beside you. An older Noncommissioned Officer. "Gotta get it past it, Young Soldier. What you're experiencing is what we call in the Army, The end of an era. When you get to your next duty station, it's going to happen over and over, man. Where you headed?" "Fort Bragg, 82nd Airborne. Dream job. I'll be jumpin outta planes for a living, Sergeant." "Great duty station. Trust me, son. You're gonna make friends there too. And you'll repeat this until you're either retired, or dead. It's what the machine is. We're just its moving parts. Ruck up, Troop, it's what your buddies would want you to do." And he got up and walked until I couldn't see him anymore. I loaded my plane. Flew off to Fort Bragg, NC, ended up comin' in a puddle jumper. Waiting for me was my then wife. I'll keep that memory to myself. Before the internet. We only had two ways of commo. The telephone and the Post Office. That was it. No cell phones, no instant messenger, no Snap Chat or Zoom Calls, just a telephone and snail mail. Thanks to Jump Pay, it helped cover the cost of long-distance calls. Then this...CD came in the mail. AOL it said. Load it into the CD Drive of your computer and let the computer do the rest. A new age and era of communication had begun. This thing called "Email”; I didn't have to write letters anymore? Hell yes. And I was able to stay in touch with my Brothers back in Germany. We still used Snail Mail, because I recorded Headbangers Ball shows and the guys got them, every week or so, along with care packages. And that...is how today's show is today's show is about. Better to party in a safe place with a big group of people than end up on the back of a milk carton was the logic of us all back then. Best girls, best cars, best music, we had it all in the 1980s. On a Friday night, you always had a place to party. From sneakin booze into the drive ins, the movie theaters, pool halls, and arcades to cruising and hanging out at some random lake or farmer’s field. There was always a place to party. And party we did. And on the speakers, metal. But when the girls were around, you played the popular tunes. You played what was popular on MTV or VH1. And when the girls were dancing and having a good time, that kept the party going. The guys didn’t want to party in a sausage fest. Fuck that noise! Welcome to Tompkins Barracks, Building 4243, this is a photo of the barracks I'd lived in. We had the best parties, we were the kings of the barracks, we were the guys that everyone wanted to hang out with. And, we were that set of soldiers the First Sergeant told FNGs aka Fuckin New Guys "These are my troublemakers, stay clear of them!" We'd then bring the FNGs to Barracks Court and find them guilty of not drinking! From the Barracks to Metal Clubs with names like, The Out, The Underground, The Zoo, Uncle Sams and our favorite, Der Schwimmbad were frequently attended with copius amounts of alcohol and being stinkasfuckstank, while running that booze out of our systems during PT. The Brothers I've made while in the Army, we stay in touch daily. We're family. And when it came to The Pit, a bar fight, a parking lot brawl, we had each other's back. We were a rowdy bunch back then. And...when parties happened in the barracks, we had the best sound systems, the best music, the best fun for all who attended. And...we also played a lot of drinking games. 3-Man was a favorite booze game of ours and that is where the famous phrase, "Covert roll!" came from. A long and funny story.
