NASA's journey to the Moon began with the Apollo program, a series of missions in the 1960s and 1970s. The iconic Apollo 11 mission, in 1969, marked the first successful landing of humans on the lunar surface. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, while Michael Collins orbited above.The Apollo missions used powerful Saturn V rockets to launch astronauts into space. After reaching lunar orbit, the lunar module separated from the command module and descended to the Moon's surface. Astronauts conducted experiments, collected samples, and planted the American flag during their lunar stay.Subsequent Apollo missions continued to explore the Moon, with Apollo 17 being the final mission in 1972. These missions provided valuable scientific data and insights into our closest celestial neighbor, advancing our understanding of the Moon and the universe.
