The Premier League club have now confirmed the extend of the teenager's injury in a big blow to manager Erik ten Hag. Despite his age, Mainoo was expected to play a role in United's upcoming campaign, with Ten Hag deciding against sending the youngster out on loan. It's unclear exactly how long he will be out for, but he certainly won't feature in the Premier League for a while.

Erik ten Hag will continue his search for a new striker. Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund is the Reds' top target but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been told by owner Joe Lewis that Harry Kane cannot be allowed to run down his contract. This means he will either have to be sold or convinced to sign a new deal this summer, the latter of which looks unlikely.
