Water is essential for life, but it is also a source of many challenges and opportunities. Climate change, population growth, and human activities are affecting the availability and quality of water on Earth. How can we better understand and manage this precious resource? The answer is SWOT, a new Earth science mission that will survey the planet's salt and freshwater bodies with unprecedented detail and accuracy. SWOT stands for Surface Water and Ocean Topography, and it is a collaboration between NASA, CNES, CSA, and UKSA. In this video, you will learn how SWOT will measure the height of water in lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and the oceans, and how this data will be used to improve flood forecasts, monitor drought conditions, detect new ocean features, assess freshwater resources, and enable data applications for various sectors and communities.
