The roads are excellent. The scenery is what truly captivates you. There's everything from white sandy beaches to blowholes and iron shores, as well as mountain scenery, and it's a gorgeous setting by anyone's standard. I was never certain as to the location of his farm, but lo and behold, he was in Cabrera and he was asking around and he said, hey, does anybody here know a guy named Barry a gringo? So, you know, obviously, in CABRERA somebody raised their hand and. Yeah, yeah, I know. Anyway, to make a long story short, he got our phone number and we connected. So, we went out to visit him outside of San Francisco de Macoris, where over the years he's developed a cocoa or cacao farm, which they do call the gold crop for obvious reasons. Middle-grade, organic cocoa. I don't have to tell you the cost of that, especially in places like Asia and Europe anyway. Acres and acres. The front part is a nice Vivero, a nursery that has all kinds of plants and trees and acres of cocoa all at different stages from the ripening stages to the ready-to-be-picked stages. It was just a great afternoon. Afterward, we all got together with a couple of other friends, and we had lunch at a really great place in the mountains just outside of San Francisco de Macoris, it was just, all in all, another fantastic day trip. So, I was just floored by this. They call it the million-dollar crop for a reason. Organic cocoa is quite expensive. Anyway, it was awesome. A great day. It wasn't all that long ago we ran into a good buddy of ours named Angel, and he's a member of one of the four-wheel drive clubs. I got to tell you, man, this buddy of mine, boy, does he know a lot of places. And we recently ran into him on the highway just cruising around on a Sunday, and he said, hey, hey, hey, what are you guys up to? We're heading out to a place that you might like. So, we asked him about it, and he said, Yeah, this beach is in an area not all that far from your house, and I think you're going to want to go with us and look and see how beautiful it is. And then you can tell your friends about it. Well, I hope you enjoy a few of the pictures & videos. I must admit, though, it was some of the most beautiful remote areas, that you don't see anybody and it’s very safe to go. What an ideal place to spend a Sunday afternoon picnic. It’s just a phenomenal place to enjoy a little bit of chicken, a couple of beers or, a soda and relax peacefully. It’s a great place for the kids to play because it's shallow and yet there are no rocks. Nobody's going to get injured. But have a look and you tell us. Okay, as we continued down the road, more and more we started to notice how pristine, natural, and untouched it was. You could still see a lot of the fishermen’s huts, some of the old boats that were lying around, and even some of the folks that are still fishing and that's how they make their living. It was about as unspoiled as you're going to get in this day and age. It was a beautiful afternoon, we started talking a little bit with the fishermen and then it was about 2:00 and we decided to go up and head to seek a river. We had a fantastic lunch overlooking the Yasica River, one of our favorite spots with great food & a view. If anybody wants any info or the locations of any of these places, just feel free to email. It was just a marvelous time. The scenery was gorgeous. There's just a never-ending array of places to go for the afternoon. So, anyone who thinks you must go away on three-, four- or five-day outings to have fun is sadly mistaken. I know dozens of them that are within a day's trip. Temperatures went from 102 degrees to the low 40’s. The scenery changed from ocean to lake country and from cactus to northern pine. I headed towards Jarabacoa and decided to check-in at the hotel. Whenever I’m in the area Liane and I really like staying at Hotel Gran Jimenoa. It’s a lovely place and they serve an excellent breakfast. I dropped off my belongings and relaxed while recharging some video batteries. I scouted the map and found an old secondary road called Paso Alto. With that kind of name, I knew it’s my cup of tea so off I went. Was a great hour and a half route right up until I found a locked gate at the end of the journey. I met a local living not too far from the gate and was hoping he’d be able to contact the person who might be able to unlock it. Got Lucky and ten minutes later it was opened for me. When I scouted the B&Bs on the Internet I was actually kind of excited. I must admit, I was quite disappointed to find out all these places were behind razor wire security walls averaging ten feet in height. In fact, every seaside villa was behind similar security, and you know what that means. Still, I drove around and after covering most major roads I determined this was not the place for me. I didn’t see any restaurants or places of interest that would entice me to hang around for the night, so it was time to move on. Since I was facing a six plus hour journey, I grabbed some chicken to go and began heading towards Sabana Larga. From there I began climbing to some hi altitude through the clouds overland roads and was heading towards Constanza. Wild how the temps went from near 100 to mid-40’s in under four hours’ time. Many folks have experienced the goat in this country. It’s delicious, however there’s a few areas where shortly after weening they eat mostly organic oregano. The flavor is drawn into the meat. From most locals they seem to feel that it’s the best way you can enjoy it. Local goat is one of the few dishes that offers two versions of the same meat. In many restaurants you’ll actually have a choice when ordering if you want it spicy or not. Traditionally Dominican culture shy’s away from spicy foods, of course that changes for those who’ve traveled or worked in other countries.
