THE LARGEST DAM IN THE WORLD HISTORY
The largest dam in the world, both by volume and by structural volume, is the Three Gorges Dam in China. It is located on the Yangtze River and was completed in 2012. The dam is 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) long, 185 meters (607 feet) high, and has a structural volume of 39.3 million cubic meters (51.4 million cubic yards).
The Three Gorges Dam is also the world's largest hydroelectric power station, with a total generating capacity of 22,500 megawatts. It was built to control flooding along the Yangtze River, which has been a recurring problem in China's history, and to generate electricity for the country's rapidly growing economy.
However, the construction of the dam was controversial, with concerns raised about the displacement of people, environmental damage, and the risk of landslides and earthquakes. Despite these concerns, the Three Gorges Dam remains one of the most impressive engineering feats in modern history.
