It is very similar to purple sweet potato varieties and is frequently confused with them due to their similar color and taste. Purple yam, on the other hand, has a moister texture and a higher anthocyanin content than sweet potatoes. Purple yam can be used for both sweet and savory dishes. Because of the high concentration of anthocyanins in it, it turns dishes a vivid violet color.

Purple yams contain two anthocyanins, cyanidin and peonidin, which may protect against lung cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer.
