Fort Christanna 2023 with Robin on the Road, Your Concierge for all things Travel.
Join me Robin on the Road as I take you on a walk at Fort Christanna. Located in Brunswick County, VA outside the town of Lawrenceville. Fort Christanna in a Historic site and part of the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail (B4). Fort Christanna was built in 1713 by then Royal Govenor Alexander Spottswood to protect what was left of the Siouan Indian Tribe. He builds a school at the Fort in order to teach the Anglican Religion and English to the 15 native tribes who live around the fort. Believing this will help with relations and trade, the fort does protect the Saponi people from the colonist and the Iroquois. Fort Christanna will close in 1722. This was the edge of the colonial wilderness. In 1924 the Dames of Colonial Virginia acquire the land a place monument honoring the fort and the Native Americans who lived and traded at the fort. The Learning Circle is a gift to the fort and its design represents the Saponi Indian Village. Teachers, students and the public are invited to talk about the people who lived here.

Dining was at Jack Browns, try the Gregg Brady located in Downtown Charlottesville.
There are three location s to park for the Saunders-Monticello trail, at the bottom of the mountain, there is also the Kemper lot after you turn left to head up the mountain or you can park for free at the visitor center and for a walk down the mountain.
Michie Tavern is located on the drive up the mountain. They only serve fried chicken with several different sides. I highly recommend reservations.
Photos and videos are all taken by Robin on the Road. My information came from the interpretive signs located and Monticello and from "Monticello the Official Guide to Thomas Jefferson's World produced by the National Geographic Society and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.
