Sandy and I fitted Norman in his new harness, hooked him to his new cart and took him for a two-mile spin. We’re just working out the bugs, ended up adjusting the seat further forward, and are still seeing buckles to adjust as we work out the fitting foibles.

When you get a new horse, you often wonder what kind of background he has, is he playful, is he smart. Norman is very smart.

We had Norman evaluated as a driving horse by a friend at our place. Now it’s time to take him away from our horses who continually whinny to him and distract him. He drove like a champ.

Often I wonder if there is something else I can do, than just throwing out a handful of scratch. It didn’t take any time, and I do mean ANY time at all for them to understand this concept. He bucked and caught a tensioner on a smooth wire fence. The hook went in and tore the deep flexor tendon, putting a Speer injury into the tendon. I put him on herbs from For Love of the Horse, and the proud flesh started to go down and be resorbed by the body. The vet said she was astounded and thought maybe it might just close up, which it did. The last picture shows my thumb next to a small scab. There is no scar now.

Kenai was being trained to pull me on skis using a travois. The travois was secured to a surcingle and the grab bar of the travois was snapped to a belt. The “snap” was a quick release clip that had a string to my wrist. If I fell down, the natural motion of my arms trying to arrest my fall would pull the pin and release me from the travois. This video was the early stages of Kenai’s training. He has since been retired and I have a new horse to train. But at its best, people use these travois’ at a canter or a fast trot through the fields and forest trails. There are many videos you can watch on stupidTube. It is for the most part a sport in Europe.

I’ve been around a lot of horses but Scout is one in a thousand, maybe one in a million. He doesn’t just play with the water hose. He actually drinks from it.
