Chinese zoo gives up trying to make fat leopard lose weight
They say a leopard never changes its spots. It also, apparently, can’t change its enormous weight. ‘Officer Clawhauser’ who got the nickname from the equally rotund, equally leopard character in Disney’s foxsploitation flick Zootopia, is, according to park staff ‘old and fat.’ Nothing they can do about his age (yet), but his weight, well, they tried.
They failed.
Officers at the Panzhihua Park Zoo decided to put their best science hats on and devise a diet and exercise regime that could finally put an end to the leopard obesity epidemic. They gave him more room to exercise. They restricted his feeding schedule. They cut his calories. Officer Clawhauser, however, was above the laws of pardine dietetics. After two months of ruthless dieting, Clawhauser had lost a grand total of 0kg. If anything, it looks like he might have put on a little. Therefore, the park boffins have come up with a new, even more foolproof plan: they’re going to give up. ‘All is fine as long as he is healthy and happy,’ said one of the staff. He’s probably happier now he’s not having to drink all those funny tasting milkshakes and watch endless reruns of ‘Sweating it to the Oldies.’

IDF uses trebuchet to hurl fireballs at Lebanon
Footage has emerged on social media appearing to show Israeli troops using a trebuchet to launch fireballs over the border with Lebanon, in order to start fires on the other side. It’s thought the troops were starting fires in an attempt to clear brush and thick vegetation, in order to stop potential combatants hiding.
According to Israeli state broadcaster KAN News, the IDF responded to the footage, claiming that it was ‘a local initiative and not a tool that is widely used,’ and that the dense growth on the other side presents a ‘challenge to the IDF forces deployed in defense.’

Russian scientists extract a billion-year-old rock from Antarctica
Russian scientists extract a billion-year-old rock from Antarctica
In a groundbreaking achievement, scientists from St. Petersburg, participating in a joint Russian-Chinese research project, have extracted a rock estimated to be around a billion years old from beneath Antarctica’s ice for the first time. The team extracted a continuous core of Antarctic ice as well. They were studying a magnetic anomaly that has so far defied scientific explanation, and hoping to quite literally get to the bottom of it. According to VNIIOkeangeologia, the drilling operation was conducted 30 kilometers south of the Progress coastal wintering station.
In addition to shedding light on one of Antarctica’s mysterious magnetic hotspots, the ice core retrieved alongside the rock sample will provide invaluable insights into the climatic and atmospheric conditions in Antarctica over the past ten thousand years. This research forms part of a collaborative effort between Jilin University, the Chinese University of Geosciences in Beijing, and the Russian Antarctic Expedition of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of Roshydromet.

Protests and clashes ahead of key Argentinian govt vote
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Congress in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, as Argentina’s Senate began voting on a state overhaul and tax bills proposed by President Javier Milei. Protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails, overturned cars and started fires, until police used rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gar to disperse the crowds. Police said that 20 officers had been injured in the clashes, while several opposition lawmakers said they were hospitalized after police pepper sprayed them.
The new bills, proposed by President Javier Milei, contain harsh austerity measures, privatization and economic deregulation, and would hand legislative powers to the president in energy, pensions and security matters. They were ultimately passed in the Senate, but will now face further votes.

Russian combat engineers clear landmines with robotic system
Even after a battle is over, there are dangers lurking everywhere. For example, the landmines scattered around Avdeevka, waiting to claim unsuspecting victims.
A team of Russian combat engineers have been painstakingly sweeping the area around the city for mines, with the help of armored mine clearance vehicle Kort-B and robotic complex Uran-6. Footage released by the Ministry of Defense shows the equipment in action, clearing roads and creating safe passages for troops.
The engineers have been able to neutralize various types of mines, both Soviet and foreign-made types, as well as ‘booby traps’ and unexploded elements of cluster munitions, all while working from a safe distance.
