3901 Three Fingers Peppermint Patty - 2019 Wild Spayed Filly Futurity
3901 Three Fingers Peppermint Patty
MEET THE 2019 WILD SPAYED FILLY FUTURITY FILLIES!
DATE OF SALE: SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 at the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Horse Sale.
Protect the Harvest presents the Second Annual Wild Spayed Filly Futurity: These fillies are invited back to the 2019 Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity to compete in their own reined cow horse division – with $25,000 to the winner. We have ten fillies that will be offered in the sale with one alternate. Like with our 2018 group, we will be following the fillies and telling their stories. All of the fillies have been spayed, and vaccinated with the Zoetis Vaccine Guarantee Program.
Wild Spayed Filly Futurity Goal: The goal of the Wild Spayed Filly Futurity is to showcase the significance and abilities of these resilient, tough and beautiful horses. It will also demonstrate their trainability and hopefully encourage more people to consider a horse from our American rangelands. A second and very important goal of the program is to help find economical, safe solutions in controlling the numbers of horses on American rangelands which will allow people to appreciate them in a healthy, balanced environment in the wild.
Benefits of spaying wild fillies: Protect The Harvest has been a steady advocate for the multiple use of Federal Lands. The extreme over population of the wild horses nationally has decimated wildlife, rangelands and water sources. Over a twenty year period, there have been many attempts to control herd populations by using the birth control drug, PZP. Unfortunately, this method has been proven ineffective, costly, and unsafe when administered. Even with application of the birth control drug, mares continue to cycle. They are bred monthly by multiple stallions and never settle. Herds have to be gathered and captured annually to administer the drugs, proving to be very costly and ineffective. The spaying procedure costs less than ONE dose of PZP and is only performed once in a mare's lifetime. After the spay procedure, mares can be returned to the wild. Once spayed, a mare can safely roam the landscape, possessing all her mare behaviors, as if she was in foal.
Protect The Harvest thanks the Burns Oregon Wild Horse and Burro program for supporting our efforts and working with us to present this unique opportunity benefiting horses of the American West.
Protect The Harvest also thanks Zoetis and Priefert for their support The fillies will be sold during the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Sale. They can be purchased during the sale in person or via online bidding.http\://snafflebitfuturitysales.com/ Like last year, they will also be available to view at the 2018 Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity. History of the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity
The History of The Snaffle Bit Futurity – A West Coast Tradition
After the Missions were established in California, to encourage settlement, the Spanish government awarded prominent men large land grants to set up ranchos. They brought with them cattle and highly skilled horsemen with their expertly trained horses to manage the great herds. The Vaquero trained his horse based on centuries-old traditions learned from developing the Spanish war horse and the skills and techniques of the Moors. It is these men that provided the foundation and traditions of the reined cow horse we see today.
At that time, the Spanish cattle in California were tough and so was the terrain. The Vaquero relied on his finely tuned mount to work the livestock and survive the land. Their training method took a horse from the hackamore, through the two rein, and then into the spade bit. Because the training and partnership of the horse and rider was so valued, the Vaqueros often held contests to showcase their horses. The contests demonstrated their horses’ bravery and cow working prowess as well as their finesse with rein work including sliding stops and spins.
As time moved on, California changed and so did the big ranchos. The Vaquero was not as common. Determined to preserve the heritage and traditions of the Vaquero and their legendary working horses, a small group of Californians founded the California Cow Horse Association and held events similar to the contests of the Vaqueros. Still today, the reined cow horse competition is the ultimate demonstration of a horse’s training and the horsemanship and skill of the showman. It is thrilling and demanding with horse and rider competing in three events; cutting/herd work, reining/dry work, and cow work/fence work. In 1970, legendary horseman Bobby Ingersoll, and a small group of volunteers held the first Snaffle Bit Futurity in Sacramento, California. The Futurity showcased the skills and training of the young reined cow horse working in the snaffle bit. In the following years, the show expanded offering classes for reined cow horses in their different stages of training; the Hackamore horse, the Two-Rein and the finished Bridle Horse.
As the popularity of the reined cow horse continued to grow and spread across the country, the California Cow Horse Association became a national organization and changed its name to the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) to reflect the growth. Additional major events were offered in different parts of the country, affiliates formed, and other reined cow horse organizations also sprang up. The venue for the Snaffle Bit Futurity moved a number of times over the years from California to Reno, then to Las Vegas and California, and then back again to Reno. However, the show has been held in Reno for the majority of its 46 years running.
Even with all this growth, for 46 years, the Snaffle Bit Futurity remained a West Coast tradition. Reno has become so synonymous with the Snaffle Bit Futurity that those in the reined cow horse world, and even those in other equestrian disciplines will typically say things like , “Do you have one for Reno?”, “How many are you taking to Reno?”
In 2016, due to a variety of factors, the NRCHA decided to move the 2017 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity to Fort Worth, Texas. There are many who did not want to see our tradition of the Snaffle Bit Futurity leave the West Coast where the reined cow horse sport was founded and they believe this event belongs. With support from Lucas Oil and Protect The Harvest and other sponsors, several champion trainers pulled together to keep a Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno.
2017 is our inaugural event, The Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity presented by Lucas Oil and Protect The Harvest.
