Wild Spayed Filly Futurity
One of our most successful initiatives so far has been the Wild Spayed Filly Futurity. This program was inspired by lawsuits filed by animal rights extremist groups against the BLM for proposing to incorporate spaying as a tool for population management of wild horses on the range. In response, Protect The Harvest stepped in to offer an opportunity to show that spaying is a viable and humane option. The program also shows the athletic and dynamic ability of wild horses to hopefully encourage more adoptions. In its inaugural year, Protect The Harvest arranged for the purchase and spay of twelve selected rangeland fillies. These fillies were offered for sale at the 2017 Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity. They sold with an invitation to compete in their own reined cow horse division at the following Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity. Winner of the competition received $25,000 dollars sponsored by Lucas Oil. The fillies competed in all three of the reined cowhorse events: herd work, rein work, and fence work. The event was a huge success and is continuing in its third year now. Since that inaugural event, the program has garnered national attention for its unique approach to wild horse and rangeland education. Additionally, we produced television episodes that aired on RFD TV in 2018 and 2019 that followed the fillies from the beginning of their training to the competition in Reno. These episodes received some of the highest Nielsen ratings for the network and are now available on YouTube and other television networks. Beyond having one of the largest audiences in recent years at the Reno coliseum, the program also reached millions of people over the course of the year. Further proving the program was successful at bringing the public’s attention to the animal welfare crisis on American rangelands. https://protecttheharvest.com/initiatives/wild-spayed-filly-futurity/

Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Horse Sale.
Protect the Harvest presents the Second Annual Wild Spayed Filly Futurity: These fillies are invited back to the 2019 Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity to compete in their own reined cow horse division – with $25,000 to the winner. We have ten fillies that will be offered in the sale with one alternate.
Like with our 2018 group, we will be following the fillies and telling their stories. All of the fillies have been spayed, and vaccinated with the Zoetis Vaccine Guarantee Program.
Wild Spayed Filly Futurity Goal: The goal of the Wild Spayed Filly Futurity is to showcase the significance and abilities of these resilient, tough and beautiful horses. It will also demonstrate their trainability and hopefully encourage more people to consider a horse from our American rangelands. A second and very important goal of the program is to help find economical, safe solutions in controlling the numbers of horses on American rangelands which will allow people to appreciate them in a healthy, balanced environment in the wild.
Benefits of spaying wild fillies:
Protect The Harvest has been a steady advocate for the multiple use of Federal Lands. The extreme over population of the wild horses nationally has decimated wildlife, rangelands and water sources. Over a twenty year period, there have been many attempts to control herd populations by using the birth control drug, PZP. Unfortunately, this method has been proven ineffective, costly, and unsafe when administered. Even with application of the birth control drug, mares continue to cycle. They are bred monthly by multiple stallions and never settle. Herds have to be gathered and captured annually to administer the drugs, proving to be very costly and ineffective. The spaying procedure costs less than ONE dose of PZP and is only performed once in a mare's lifetime. After the spay procedure, mares can be returned to the wild. Once spayed, a mare can safely roam the landscape, possessing all her mare behaviors, as if she was in foal.
Protect The Harvest thanks the Burns Oregon Wild Horse and Burro program for supporting our efforts and working with us to present this unique opportunity benefiting horses of the American West.
Protect The Harvest also thanks Zoetis and Priefert for their support The fillies will be sold during the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Sale. They can be purchased during the sale in person or via online bidding.

4036 Sweet Scarlet
MEET THE 2019 WILD SPAYED FILLY FUTURITY FILLIES!
DATE OF SALE: SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 at the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Horse Sale.
Benefits of spaying wild fillies: Protect The Harvest has been a steady advocate for the multiple use of Federal Lands.
