* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Akron, Ohio — On Saturday, July 1st, 2023, just before 7:00 p.m., Akron Police officers performed a registration check on a vehicle that possessed a temporary tag. The report back was the plate was expired and warrants for 31-year-old Jordan Ely Sr. were linked to it. Officers verified the warrants were still active, but lost sight of the vehicle for a short period of time. The car was found in the parking lot of Family Dollar, 970 Copley Rd, with the driver standing next to it. As officers pulled up and exited the cruiser, the driver and suspect, Ely Sr. reached towards the open car door, and then started to turn away as one of the officers attempted to grab his left arm to prevent him from fleeing. Ely began to back pedal while officers were attempting to gain control of him. One officer grabbed Ely by the waist and took him to the ground.
Verbal commands were given to Ely to put his hands behind his back and to stop resisting. Ely did not comply, and officers continued to try to separate his hands to safely handcuff the suspect. Videos taken by witnesses at the scene show the officers struggling with the driver, with one officer appearing to strike the man in the face several times. Once Ely was handcuffed, he was moved to a seated position and EMS was called to the scene for an evaluation. One of the officers discovered a small child inside the vehicle. The child, Ely's 1-year-old son, was released into the custody of the boy's mother. Inside the vehicle, officers found a baggie containing a powder that field tested positive for Fentanyl. Ely had warrants for felony drug possession, domestic violence, and contempt of court warrants for several other charges. He was additionally charged with Obstructing Official Business, Resisting Arrest, and felony possession of drugs.

LAPD Cop Use Bean Bag Round To Arrest Man Armed With Spiked Lawn Edger
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Los Angeles, California — On June 2, 2023, around 11:15 a.m., Wilshire Area patrol officers received a radio call of an Assault with a Deadly Weapon suspect at the medical offices in the 5900 block of Venice Boulevard. As officers arrived, they observed the suspect, later identified as Uriah Sanders, holding an approximate four-foot spiked lawn edger in his hands. Officers ordered Sanders, who appeared to be suffering from a mental illness, to drop the edger, however Sanders failed to comply. Additional units, a supervisor, a Mental Evaluation Unit, and a less lethal beanbag shotgun were requested. A tactical plan was formulated to take Sanders into custody.
Throughout the 30-minute interaction with Sanders, officers made several attempts to gain his voluntary compliance. Without warning, Sanders began walking towards the officers while armed with the spiked edger. Officers advised Sanders that a less lethal beanbag shotgun would be used if he did not stop, and he failed to comply. Sanders continued towards the officers which resulted in one officer discharging a single beanbag shotgun round, striking Sanders in the upper right chest. Sanders fell to the ground and was taken into custody without further incident. Sanders was taken inside the hospital at that location and was treated for a bruised lung, pulmonary contusion and two rib fractures. Due to Sanders injuries, he was admitted into the hospital. No officers or other citizens were injured during the incident.

Surprise Police Officer Shoots Man As He Reaches For His Gun
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Surprise, Arizona — On March 28, 2023, The Surprise Police Department received a call of a male refusing to leave the parking lot of a local business. The officer walked up to the vehicle and spoke to the man, 28-year-old Joseph Martin through the open driver side rear door. Martin began yelling at the officer, as the officer asked him questions. At one point, the officer asked him if he had any weapons in the vehicle and the man yelled, "I am the weapon", and later began to yell "you are all pedophiles". The officer told Martin several times, that he needed to leave the parking lot. The officer requested another police unit, to respond to the call.
While the first officer continued to try and speak with Martin, a uniform Sergeant arrived and the sergeant also attempted to engage Martin in conversation. Soon thereafter, Martin began to scream at the officers and tried to close the car door, while he was still inside the vehicle. The officer and Sergeant, prevented the door from closing and attempted to remove Martin from the vehicle. As the first officer reached towards Martin, he yelled that he had a gun. As he yelled this, Martin reached his right hand, toward his waistband, at the same time Martin grabbed the officer's holster. This is when the officer-involved shooting occurred. Martin was removed from the vehicle and officers attempted life-saving measures, until the fire department arrived. Martin died at the scene. During the investigation, a handgun was found in the man's right front pants pocket.

Sergeant King shot and struck Richardson with one round. After Richardson’s gun was secure, aid was rendered to him by officers and AMT Ambulance. Richardson was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he later died. As Richardson was running from the vehicle, he dropped the gun three separate times. Cranston Police Officers Shoot Homicide Suspect Who Pointed Gun at Them
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Cranston, Rhode Island — On May 23, 2023, Johnston Police were called to Ligian Court for a complaint of suspicious activity. When cops arrived, 44-year-old Thomas May, reported hearing banging noises on the walls outside his home near his daughter's window. May informed police that he'd raised the window blinds and noticed his neighbor, 52-year-old James Harrison, standing outside his house with a ladder. Harrison lived just next door to May. Harrison ran back to his residence. Officers found no evidence of attempted forced entry through the bedroom window and were unable to locate the ladder May claimed seeing. May asked to file a trespass order against Harrison. Officers knocked on Harrison's door and called him, but he did not answer.
Officer Scott Hopkins returned on Wednesday, May 24, in another attempt to reach Harrison and issue him a trespass notice, but when he arrived, he saw Harrison operating a dark blue Buick Encore. Hopkins attempted to turn around to arrest Harrison, but he saw May's 15-year-old daughter laying on the front yard of the house with an apparent gunshot wound, and stopped to aid her. Thomas May was found in the garage with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. May's daughter identified Harrison as the shooter, prompting law officials to issue a "Be on the Lookout" bulletin. The injured girl was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, where she was treated for significant but non-life threatening injuries.
Officers entered 4 Ligian Court, which belongs to Harrison's mother, 83-year-old Janet Harrison. She was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. A police dispatcher called the Cranston Police Department at 9:30 a.m. to report that James Harrison's vehicle had been seen near St. Ann Cemetery. Officers tracked the vehicle through various jurisdictions before it crashed on Plainfield Pike in Cranston, near the Interstate 295 overpass. Police ordered him out of his vehicle, and the video shows officers scrambling into position behind cruisers and other obstacles before drawing their service weapons. Harrison then got out of his car and pointed a gun at the officers. Police immediately began firing at Harrison and his vehicle, killing him. After about 10 seconds, the gunfire subsided and police rushed over to a visibly bloodied Harrison before putting him in handcuffs. No officers were reported hurt, although some went to a hospital to be evaluated.

Border Patrol Agents Shoot Man Who Hit Another Agent With a Wooden Club
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Las Cruces, New Mexico — On April 2, 2023, at around 8:37 p.m., a Border Patrol agent observed a white Nissan Rogue sports utility vehicle circumvent a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint located on Interstate 10, approximately 23 miles west of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and began to follow. After traveling approximately 7.6 miles west on C001, the driver of the SUV approached a closed vehicle gate near a residence on the Burris Ranch. The driver turned his vehicle around and stopped the SUV facing east toward I-10 on C001. Agents exited their vehicles and approached the SUV with their weapons drawn. Agents ordered the driver to show his hands and exit the vehicle, but he did not comply. Agents attempted to open the driver side door by pulling the handle but were unsuccessful. An agent then struck the driver side window with his collapsible straight baton; however, the window did not break.
At that point, the driver of the SUV drove away from agents and travelled east on C001. Agents requested assistance from additional personnel via radio and the deployment of a vehicle immobilization device. Responding agents successfully deployed an immobilization device on the SUV. Three of the SUV’s tires came into contact with the device. After traveling approximately 1.4 miles north on C003, the driver of the SUV stopped and exited the vehicle on foot. The body worn cameras showed the driver of the SUV moving north on foot on C003, away from the three agents, as they repeatedly ordered him to stop. The driver was holding a shirt in one hand and a wooden club in the other. The driver was approached by several agents at gunpoint. The driver then swung the club three times in close proximity to one of the agents, who holstered his weapon and moved backwards to create distance.
The driver once again began to walk away from the agents who repeatedly instructed him to stop and to drop the club. The driver once again swung the club three times at an approaching agent. An agent attempted to deploy an electronic control weapon twice over the next minute after instructing the driver to stop and drop the club. The driver appeared to prevent the taser from successfully deploying on both occasions by blocking the prongs with a shirt he was holding. The driver continued to walk away from the agents, who continued to follow and order him to stop and drop the club,. As the driver continued to walk along a fence line, another agent arrived in a marked unit and approached the driver with his extended baton in hand. This agent ordered the driver to stop and put the wooden club down.
The driver swung his club as the agent approached, making contact with the agent’s baton, and swung his club a second time but did not strike the agent as the agent fell backward. The driver continued advancing toward the agent, who was now on the ground, swung the wooden club a third time and struck the agent. The driver struck the agent a second time as he stood over him and was preparing to do so again when three other agents fired their service weapons, striking the driver. The agents fired approximately 16 rounds. The driver fell to the ground a few feet from where the agent had fallen on his back. Agents then approached the driver, removed the wooden club from his hands, secured him and then placed him into a recovery position. An agent checked the driver for a pulse while other agents requested an ambulance along with medical assistance from emergency medical services. The suspect died at the scene and has only been identified as an adult man who is a citizen of the U.S.

Bodycam Footage Shows Moment Arizona Trooper is Shot By Suspect
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Phoenix, Arizona — On Monday, June 19, 2023, shortly after 11:30 a.m. Trooper Sean Harkins stopped the driver near 21st Avenue and Thomas Road. The body-cam video of Trooper Sean Harkins shows him walking up to a dark-colored Kia four-door sedan. That’s when the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Luis Mateo Jacobo Borja, leans out his window, says, “Gotta go bro,” and shoots Harkins in the leg. A startled Hawkins stumbles to the ground before retreating to the side of his own vehicle to report that he had been shot and that Borja had fled south on 21st Avenue.
He grabs what appears to be a tourniquet from a recess on the driver's side door when another law enforcement officer arrives to render aid. The officer repeatedly tells Hawkins to "stay with me" as he helps him lie down with his back to the ground and reports on the radio that Hawkins had been struck in the left leg and requested immediate assistance. Harkins was taken to the hospital and later released that night. Police say Borja shot at police twice before he crashed into a wall near 36th Avenue and Thomas Road. One officer was hospitalized after being hit by shrapnel but was released Monday night. Borja was found shot to death in his car. Police did not disclose whether the wound was self-inflicted or caused by the officer who shot at him with a rifle.

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Marion County, Florida — On June 16, 2023, at around 6:00 p.m., Deputy Robert Bosnyak initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling in the 10000 block of S Highway 41, in Dunnellon. The driver, 34-year-old Christopher North, initially slowed down and pulled to the shoulder of the roadway. Once Deputy Bosnyak came to a stop in his patrol vehicle, North fled at a high rate of speed. Deputy Bosnyak initiated a vehicle pursuit. North fled for a short distance before coming to a final stop in the 11000 block of N Williams Street. Deputy Bosnyak conducted a felony traffic stop and maintained control of the situation while additional deputies responded to assist.
When they arrived, North was instructed to get out of the vehicle and was taken into custody. During a search, deputies discovered that North was in possession of approximately 85 grams of a green, leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana. When North was questioned, he initially stated he was not driving. However, he ultimately claimed he was looking for a safe place to stop the vehicle. North also admitted that he does not have a valid driver’s license. North was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail where he is currently being held on $4,500 bond. He is facing felony charges for fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer and possession of marijuana over 20 grams, along with a misdemeanor charge for operating a vehicle without a valid license.

Suspect Gets Tased and Arrested After Firing Shot Just Days After Jail Release
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Atlanta, Georgia — On June 16, 2023, around 1:55am, officers responded to a criminal trespass call at the location of 22 14th St. Upon arrival, officers canvassed the parking lot and located a vehicle with the window shot out, with a single shell casing round on the ground. Officers were provided a description of the suspect and continued canvassing the area until they located a male matching the description provided. Officers attempted to detain the suspect, identified as Kemeron Johns for questioning, giving loud verbal commands for him to drop the weapon and surrender.
Johns continued ignoring the officers’ commands and appeared to have discharged a round from his firearm in an unknown direction as officers attempted to engage him. Officers on scene strategized a tactical approach towards Johns with both lethal and less lethal use of force options to engage Johns. As officers closed the distance between themselves and Johns, they successfully deployed their city-issued tasers and rendered the suspect immobile. Officers then detained Johns and recovered a firearm from his person. Grady EMS arrived to evaluate the suspect before he was transported to Fulton County Jail.
Johns is back behind bars after being arrested, just nine days after being released from the Fulton County Jail. Johns’ criminal record shows that he was first arrested in Fulton County in 2011, then again in 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and, most recently before Friday morning, June 7, 2023. Related to Friday’s incident, Johns was charged with criminal trespass for being on the resident level of Icon Midtown and property damage for shooting out the apartment building’s window. He is also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, discharging a firearm under the influence of drugs, reckless conduct, obstruction, possession of a drug-related object and pointing a firearm at a person.

Denver Police Chase Ends in Shootout With Armed Suspect
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Denver, Colorado — On June 7, 2023, at about 7:28 p.m., a ShotSpotter alert for a suspected shots-fired incident was dispatched for the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Cherry Street, according to Denver Police. Two police officers responded to the scene about two minutes later. A person matching a suspect description was found at 7:33 p.m. and fled on a scooter, while police pursued in their patrol vehicle. The pursuit later became a foot chase, ending at MLK Boulevard and Forest Street.
As the suspect was running, he turned towards the officer took the gun from a one-handed right-handed grip to a two-handed pistol style grip, and discharged the firearm at the uniformed officer, striking him once. The officer immediately returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. Both the suspect and officer were transported to a hospital, where the suspect was hospitalized in critical condition and the police officer was treated and released. The suspect has since been released from the hospital and is in the custody of the Gilliam Youth Center.
Through the investigation, it was determined that the male suspect fired his handgun at least one time at the uniformed officer. The ShotSpotter system captured the exchange of gunfire between the officer and the subject, noting 10 rounds were fired at that time, and unloaded the officer's firearm, indicated he just charged his weapon 8 times. The firearm the suspect possessed was a Taurus 9 mm semiautomatic handgun. That firearm had a drum-style magazine which was capable of holding 50 rounds of 9 millimeter ammunition.
A shell casing that was recovered from the shooting scene was forensically matched to the shell casings recovered at the original ShotSpotter location near Dexter St. The officer was struck one time by the round that was fired by the suspect and after close examination it was determined that the round struck the magazine that was on the officer's duty belt that he was wearing around his waist. It appears that either shrapnel from the magazine or fragment for the bullet impacted the officer's lower left abdomen side. The officer sustained significant bruise and pain from that impact.

Florida Deputies T-boned While Responding To a False 911 Call
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Deltona, Florida — On June 8, 2023, around 4:30 p.m. 47-year-old Fabiola Robles called 911 and reported “My next-door neighbor’s kid is drowning right now.” She repeated the claim as a 911 dispatcher confirmed location and other information. While en route, a patrol vehicle traveling with lights and sirens active through the intersection of Providence and Fort Smith boulevards was struck by a vehicle in a T-bone crash. Both deputies in the car were ultimately transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment of their injuries. Upon arrival on scene, other deputies and members of the Deltona Fire Department quickly determined no child was actually drowning. At the house where the drowning was alleged to have happened, the neighbor told deputies that Robles had been complaining all day about the noise his children were making in the back yard.
There was no pool or other body of water there, only an inflatable water slide. When asked if she ever actually saw a child drowning, Robles said she didn’t. The call type was then changed from a drowning to a noise complaint. In addition to the 3 deputies and 3 Deltona Fire units who responded to the false drowning call, multiple deputies, Deltona Fire, Volusia County EMS and Florida Highway Patrol units responded to the scene of the traffic crash. Robles was arrested on Wednesday, June 14. She is charged with misuse of 911 after she made a false report of a child drowning, prompting an emergency response that led to a serious traffic crash in which two deputies were injured. Robles was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail, where she later posted $5,000 bond.

Canton, Ohio — On June 7, 2023, at about 10:07 p.m., Canton Police Officers responded to the disturbance in the 300 block of 25th Street SW, according to police. According to a 911 call, a neighbor called police to report a loud disturbance at a nearby home. As officers arrived outside the home, 41-year-old Jeffrey Neff take off running. Officer Jacob Dryden and his partner pursue Neff through a backyard, over a fence, and across an interstate entrance ramp.
During the foot pursuit, officials say one shot was fired from Neff at Officer Dryden, grazing him, but not seriously injuring him. The officer shot back, firing every bullet in his gun, as many as 17. Neff was struck multiple times. Neff's wife, Domnita, heard the gunshots and began running behind police officers pursuing her husband. Seconds later, Dryden reloaded. He and his partner, Scott Wohlheter, walked toward Neff. EMS transported Neff to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital where he died from his injuries. The neighbor who phoned police later told a detective that Neff's wife had asked her to call police, because Domnita Neff didn't want to make the call herself.

Bodycam Shows Waco Officer Shooting Charging Dog After Going To Wrong House
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Waco, Texas — On June 3, 2023, at 3:17 p.m. officers were dispatched about a burglary in progress. Dispatchers received information from the reporting party screaming a male kicked her door in and, “Please come now.” The call taker also heard a male’s voice in the background stating, “I’m not trying to hurt you,” the call was then disconnected. While Dispatchers entered the address into system, the address autocorrected with the same house number in the 3200 Block N. 20th St. but the corresponding adjacent “A” street was not included.
When officers arrived at the 3200 Block of N. 20th, they saw the backdoor ajar which corroborated information received in the initial call. Officers announced their presence, and shortly thereafter multiple dogs came toward officers who retreated. One dog who acted more aggressively lunged at one of the officer, retreated, and then lunged at the officer again. After the dog lunged a second time toward the officer, the officer made the decision to fire one round of his duty-issued weapon, striking the dog. Finn was taken to the emergency medical clinic by his owner, but he later died.
The original incident was quickly addressed by officers after realizing they were dispatched to the wrong house. No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made from the original call. To prevent this from happening again, Waco Police Department has instructed dispatchers to review any address that occurs on any of the streets that have an adjacent "A" street. The department is also working with the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system manufacturer to ensure that steps are taken to prevent this kind of mistake.
