I converted my old non-working 2-wire 12 si alternator into a single wire. After a new voltage regulator (D33), brushes and diode trio, it still wouldn't start. It had been sitting for a while, the residual magnetism in it went away. This caused the alternator to not start, even with a good battery connected. My solution is to add a jumper wire directly to the positive field bolt at the brush, thereby kick starting the field in the rotor and bringing the alternator back to life. I did this on a Delco Remy 12si, which is a very common alternator that is used on a lot of heavy equipment and GM vehicles. This should work on a lot of alternators. Before you modify anything, research it.
