White sharks in the family Lamnidae are ambush hunters that surprise their prey.
White sharks in the family Lamnidae are ambush hunters that surprise their prey. In deep waters, their gray backs blend into the background, making it difficult for seals to spot them from above. Most sharks are cold-blooded, but these sharks--including great whites -have evolved to keep their bodies warmer than the surrounding water. They can capture the heat generated by swimming and keep it in their bodies through specialized blood vessels.
Thanks to efforts to bring back the gray seal, a favorite prey, the great white shark population in the North Atlantic is also bouncing back.
