Temperance is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23. Temperance is often translated as self-control and is essential to Christian living. It involves controlling one's desires and passions and living a disciplined life. The Greek word for temperance is "enkrateia," which means "self-control" or "self-restraint." It describes a person who has control over their desires and passions. Temperance involves living a disciplined life and avoiding excesses. The Bible teaches that temperance is essential for Christian living. In 1 Corinthians 9:25-27, believers are encouraged to exercise self-control in all things to receive the prize of eternal life. In Titus 2:11-12, believers are instructed to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age. Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of temperance. He exercised self-control throughout His life on earth and resisted temptation even when it was difficult. He lived a disciplined life and avoided excesses. Memory Text: Through the Holy Spirit, believers may know “what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:19, 20, NKJV). Human beings, it seems, are always reaching for more power. In contrast, Paul prays that believers in Ephesus, under temptation to admire the various powers and deities of their culture, will experience through the Holy Spirit the immensity of the power God makes available to them in Christ. Faith is one of the nine fruits of the Spirit, as listed in Galatians 5:22-23. The fruit of the Spirit are the characteristics or qualities that are produced in us by the Holy Spirit as we live in a relationship with Jesus Christ. The word "faith" in Galatians 5:22 is the Greek word "pistis," which means "trust," "belief," or "confidence." It is the same word that is used in Hebrews 11:1, which defines faith as "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." In other words, faith is the ability to believe in something that we cannot see or prove with our own eyes. It is the trust that God is who He says He is, and that He will do what He says He will do. Faith is essential for our salvation. In Romans 3:28, Paul writes, "For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law." This means that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our own works or efforts. Faith is also essential for our Christian walk. In Hebrews 11:6, we read, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him." Faith is not something that we can produce in ourselves. It is a gift from the Holy Spirit. In Ephesians 2:8-9, Paul writes, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast." However, we can grow in our faith by spending time in God's Word, praying, and worshiping Him. As we do these things, we will come to know God more and more, and our faith will grow stronger. Here are some examples of how faith can be seen in the lives of Christians: 1. A Christian who is facing a difficult trial may have faith that God will see them through it. 2. A Christian who is struggling with sin may have faith that God will forgive them if they repent. 3. A Christian who is witnessing to others may have faith that God will use them to bring others to Him. 4. Faith is a powerful thing. It can help us to overcome obstacles, to forgive others, and to love our enemies. It can also help us to live a life that is pleasing to God. If you want to grow in your faith, I encourage you to spend time in God's Word, pray, and worship Him. As you do these things, your faith will grow stronger, and you will be able to live a life that is full of the fruit of the Spirit. Gentleness is an important quality for Christians. It means showing care and respect for others in the way that you act and speak (Galatians 5:22-23; Philippians 4:5). To be gentle is to be tender, humble, and fair, to know what posture and response is fitting for any occasion. It indicates a graciousness, a desire to extend mercy to others, and a desire to yield to both the will of God and the preferences of other people (Colossians 3:12). Kindness is a highly valued virtue in the Bible and is often associated with Love and compassion. It is an attribute of God and is demonstrated through His actions towards humanity. The Greek word for kindness is "chrestotes," which means "usefulness" or "benignity." It is used to describe a person who is gentle, considerate, and helpful towards others. Kindness is not just about being nice to people but also about being compassionate and empathetic towards them. It involves putting others before oneself and showing Love and care for them. The Bible teaches that kindness is an essential part of Christian living. Colossians 3:12 encourages believers to clothe themselves with kindness as part of their new nature in Christ. In Ephesians 4:32, believers are instructed to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, and forgiving another as God in Christ forgave them. Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of kindness. He showed kindness to everyone He met, regardless of their social status or background. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and forgave sinners. As we study end-time events in regard to the mark of the beast, one crucial point that comes through is the difference between how God operates and how the enemy of souls does. As we have been studying, the central issues in the great controversy between Christ and Satan are loyalty, authority, and worship. The prophecies describing the beast power in Revelation 13, the little horn in Daniel 7, and the “son of perdition” in 2 Thessalonians 2 all speak of a power that usurps God’s authority, commands loyalty, and introduces a counterfeit system of worship. And it does so through the use of force, coercion, and at times bribes and rewards—all in order to compel worship. In contrast, love is the great motivating force of the kingdom of God. Rather than worshiping the beast, God’s people find their greatest joy and highest delight in worshiping Him. They are committed to Him because they know how committed He is to them. There is only one thing that will keep any of us from receiving the mark of the beast in the end time—a love for Jesus so deep that nothing can break our hold upon Him. Memory Text: “He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints” (Revelation 13:10, NKJV). In the fifteenth century, the Piedmont valleys, high in the Alps of northern Italy, were home to the Waldenses, a people determined to stay faithful to their understanding of the Bible. As a result of their steadfast loyalty to Christ, they were fiercely persecuted. In a.d. 1488, the Waldenses in the Valley of Loyse were brutally murdered by the Roman Church for their faith. Another wave of persecution came in the seventeenth century when the Duke of Savoy sent an army of 8,000 into their territory and demanded that the local populace quarter his troops in their homes. They did as he requested, but this was a strategy to give the soldiers easy access to their victims. On April 24, 1655, at 4:00 a.m., a signal was given for the massacre to begin. This time the death toll was more than 4,000. History, unfortunately, is often repeated. The “mark of the beast” prophecy is about the final link in an ungodly chain of religious persecution that goes back through the ages. Like the persecutions of the past, it is designed to force everyone to conform to a certain set of beliefs and an approved system of worship. As the sun rose over Lake Michigan and commuters battled traffic jams on the Kennedy and Eisenhower expressways, and children made their way to school, a chilling story began to emerge that struck fear into the hearts of Chicagoans. People were becoming tragically sick, and some were dying just a few hours after taking Tylenol capsules. On testing, each of the capsules proved to be laced with potassium cyanide, a deadly poison. A deranged individual had tampered with the medication. To this day, we don't know who did this. As we have seen, Revelation warns us that the "inhabitants of the earth" will drink a deadly potion called the "wine of Babylon." There are false doctrines and teachings that, in the end, will lead only to death. However, the world is not left without the antidote, the protection against this spiritual poison: the three angels' messages. In this week's lesson, we will continue looking at Babylon's deceptions, Jesus' plan (GPS - Gospel Plan of Salvation) should be our blueprint and moral compass.) to save us from them, and the death they would otherwise bring. The Jewish Encyclopedia clearly identifies the origin of the false idea of the immortality of the soul. As we study end-time events in regard to the mark of the beast, one crucial point that comes through is the difference between how God operates and how the enemy of souls does. As we have been studying, the central issues in the great controversy between Christ and Satan are loyalty, authority, and worship. The prophecies describing the beast power in Revelation 13, the little horn in Daniel 7, and the “son of perdition” in 2 Thessalonians 2 all speak of a power that usurps God’s authority, commands loyalty, and introduces a counterfeit system of worship. And it does so through the use of force, coercion, and at times bribes and rewards—all in order to compel worship. In contrast, love is the great motivating force of the kingdom of God. Rather than worshiping the beast, God’s people find their greatest joy and highest delight in worshiping Him. They are committed to Him because they know how committed He is to them. There is only one thing that will keep any of us from receiving the mark of the beast in the end time—a love for Jesus so deep that nothing can break our hold upon Him. We will explore these themes further in this lesson. Satan has many finely woven, dangerous nets which are made to appear innocent, but with which he is skillfully preparing to infatuate God’s people. Gentleness is an important quality for Christians. It means showing care and respect for others in the way that you act and speak (Galatians 5:22-23; Philippians 4:5). To be gentle is to be tender, humble, and fair, to know what posture and response is fitting for any occasion. It indicates a graciousness, a desire to extend mercy to others, and a desire to yield to both the will of God and the preferences of other people (Colossians 3:12). The Bible has many verses that talk about gentleness. Examples include: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” - Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) “Let your gentleness be evident to all. Anchor Scriptures: "O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles." Psalm 43:3, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." Matthew 5:6 In this panel discussion, we explored "Why Sunday is Not the Christian Sabbath Day" and gave 10+ uncontroverted reasons. Also, extra-biblical evidence in support of the validity of Saturday as the 7th day of the week and the Sabbath of the fourth Commandment was presented during the conclusion. At the same time, panel members focus on what the Bible has to say regarding a seemingly controversial topic. Beware of closed minds and majority rule - What should be the test of the Sabbath? Only the word of God, the infallible rule of inspired Scripture. One can be sincere and sincerely wrong. Paul and the early church, including Greece and Gentiles, followed Jesus' example (Luke 4:16; Acts 13:42, 44; 16:13) but wrongly heard that Paul had large crowds of Jewish at synagogues only on Saturdays. Modern critics say Sabbathkeepers as legalists, really; John 14:15? Remember, don't look for the most popular way, convenient way, or via political correctness, but let's look for the Bible way; it's possible to observe or keep the Sabbath in today's competitive, industrialized society (1 John 5:3; Mat 6:33), though there is economic manipulation of Saturdays to our perils temporary. Also note that without love, Sabbath-keeping, including all law, will be mechanical and miserable such that commandments keeping should be dight and relational. Panel members attempted to answer the questions below using the Bible and extra-biblical references. These questions were derived from the various justifications for Sunday observance. i. The Sabbath is part of the old covenant. We are under the new covenant of grace, so keeping the Sabbath is unnecessary. Is that true? ii. The Sabbath is for the Jews. It was given to the children of Israel only. Sunday is the Christian Sabbath. The apostles rested on Sunday, the 1st day of the week, not on Saturday, the 7th day (see Acts 20, I Corinthians 16, and Revelation 1:10). Does the bible support this position? iii. Some people believe that the law was nailed to the cross; therefore, we are no longer required to keep the Sabbath of the fourth commandment. Are we free from keeping the Ten Commandments because of the death of Christ on the cross? iv. No need to keep the fourth commandment because Jesus is our Sabbath. Is that true? v. The seven days weekly cycle instituted at creation has been lost. We cannot tell which day is the 7th day of the week. How true is this assertion? vi. The fourth commandment says we should work for six days and rest on the seventh day. Hence any day of the week can be a Sabbath day. Can we select any day of the week and observe it as the Sabbath? Memory Text: "'These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful'" (Revelation 17:14, NKJV). The great controversy theme is summarized in Revelation with the symbolism of two women: one clothed with the sun, in Revelation 12, and one dressed in scarlet, in Revelation 17. The striking symbol of the woman clothed with the sun, in the dazzling glory of Christ, is found in Revelation 12. She is faithful to her true Lover, Jesus. She is not defiled with the corruption of false doctrines. Throughout the Bible, a pure woman symbolizes the bride of Jesus, or the true church. In Jeremiah 6:2, the prophet says, "'I have likened the daughter of Zion to a lovely and delicate woman'" (NKJV). The prophet uses the expression "daughter of Zion" or a faithful woman to describe God's people. (See also Eph. 5:25–32 and Hos. 2:20.) In contrast, the Bible likens apostasy to harlotry or adultery (James 4:4). Speaking of Israel's rebellion and unfaithfulness, Ezekiel laments, "'You are an adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband'" (Ezekiel 16:32, NKJV). In this lesson, we will study these two women of Revelation and probe the conflict between truth and error more deeply. A graphic portrayal of an apostate system of religion that has a powerful influence on the world. Drunk is Always a negative in the Bible, while fornication symbolizes false teachings, doctrine, and practice. To search for an understanding of the nature of Babylon, we need to go back to its first reference in the biblical record, in Genesis. It all began on the plain of the land of Shinar, a region in the southern part of Mesopotamia, today south Iraq, called Babylonia. Remember, the men of [Noah's] generation claimed that their idols were representations of the Deity and that through them, the people could obtain a clearer conception of the divine Being.—Conflict and Courage, p. 50. True religion is obedience to all the commandments of God. We need to enter into His purpose, and carry out His will, saying with the whole heart, "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?"—This Day With God, p. 322. We must put on every piece of the [heavenly] armor of Bible Studies, arduous prayer, and occasional fasting while standing firm. Longsuffering is a quality of God's goodness and faithfulness1. The Bible provides several verses that support this claim. Principle and Definition: Peace from the biblical perspective refers to a state of harmony and tranquility that comes from knowing and following God's will. It is a state of inner calmness that transcends any external circumstances or conflicts. The Bible teaches that peace is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23) and that it is a gift that comes from God (John 14:27). Peace is not something that we can achieve on our own; rather, it is a result of our relationship with God. It's easy to take things for granted, particularly things that we have always known or experienced. How easy is it, for instance, for young children to take their parents for granted, whom they have known all their short lives. How easy for us, too, to take for granted the sun, the sky, the air, or the ground beneath our feet. However, have you ever stopped to think about how much we take existence itself for granted? That is, how often do we stop and ask the famous philosophical question, Why is there something instead of nothing? Why does our universe itself, and all the majesty and grandeur and astonishing things in it, exist to begin with? What great logical contradiction would occur were our universe, and we who are in it, not here? According to the latest scientific theory (they tend to change), our universe once did not exist. In other words, ours is a contingent existence, and it's a miracle that we are here at all. And despite all sorts of myths about the universe arising from absolutely nothing (the Big Bang Theory), or from some kind of mathematical equation, our universe exists because God, the Creator, has made it and everything in it (Genesis 1:1, God bara). God's unutterable love, personality, and character, were personified in Christ, our Creator, our Sustainer, our Redeemer, our Mediator and our Glorifier. It was at the cross that mercy and truth met together, that righteousness and truth kissed each other. —6T, p. 59. The night is far spent, the day is at hand" (Romans 13:11, 12, NKJV). Several years ago, National Geographic magazine described a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park in the United States. After it ended, forest rangers trekked up a mountain to assess the National Geographic magazine described damage. One ranger found a bird literally burned to ashes at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. Three tiny baby birds scurried from under their dead mother's wings when he struck it. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. What a picture of the believer who is safe in Christ! The fires of God's judgment burned themselves out on Him at Calvary, and all who are in Christ are safe forever beneath His wings. At the cross, Christ was judged as a condemned sinner so that we could be judged as righteous citizens of the heavenly kingdom. He was judged as a criminal so that we could be set free from the destructive fires of eternal loss, both figuratively and literally. Christ was treated as we deserve, that we might be treated as He deserves [Reflecting Christ, p. 45]. Unfortunately, in individual families, the church, and the world all over, people are in a steep and deep spiritual stupor, and lurgy, moral, and social decline is becoming unprecedented, surpassing the Antediluvians and People in penta-cities in the plain. As the sins of the people were anciently transferred, in the figure, to the earthly sanctuary by the blood of the sin offering, so our sins are, in fact, transferred to the heavenly sanctuary by the blood of Christ. And as the typical cleansing of the earthly was accomplished by the removal of the sins by which it had been polluted, so the actual cleansing of the heavenly is to be accomplished by the removal, or blotting out, of the sins which are there recorded. This necessitates an examination of the books of record to determine who, through repentance of sin and faith in Christ, are entitled to the benefits of His atonement. The cleansing of the sanctuary, therefore, involves a work of investigative judgment. This work must be performed prior to the coming of Christ to redeem His people, for when He comes, His reward is with Him to give to every man according to His works.
