A video discussing the question, is anti-racism actually racist? This is the fifth episode in my series on divisive definitions, and I try to answer questions like ‘what do anti-racists think’, ‘what do anti-racists believe’, ‘what do people mean when they say anti-racism’, and ‘should I be an anti-racist?’ So I do my best to try to define anti-racism, as well as talk about the complexities of the new definitions of racism, the difficulties of activitsts trying to redefine words, what people mean when they say ‘equity’, and how anti-racism is used to justify some crazy diversity trainings. So am I saying that people who push anti-racism are always racists in disguise? No. But I see some pretty racist things being done in the name of anti-racism, and I’m a big fan of judging people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Reasons to Vote for Each Candidate: a Conservative Breakdown Here are reasons to vote for each candidate, specifically a conservative breakdown. The US presidential election is here, and in order to get my thoughts straight on who I am going to vote for, I decided to make a list weighing my options, and I thought it might make a good video! Trump hasn’t seized power during a pandemic and has helped with peace deals in the middle east, but he also has a loudmouth and won’t get off Twitter. Biden seems to be a good guy who respects the constitution but evades important questions and picked Harris of all people as his VP. You probably have different thoughts or priorities than me, and that’s fine. This is a response to Sarah Z, a response video because I think she made a bad video essay on debating. Well, I should say a good video essay on debating with very biased examples. Sarah talks about why we debate, and what one can truly learn from a debate, and there I think she did a really good job! It takes a turn for the worse when she cherry picks and attacks both Ben Shapiro and the Quartering. Cinema Wins deviated from the usual review videos he does with one entitled “Silence”, and I’d like to talk about it. He talks about how silence is easy, but I disagree, silence isnt easy. Everyone thinks they have the right answers, and I feel like CinemaWins was both sincere and did a great job discussing the hard subject of racism, but I also feel like he missed the mark in places. Everyone thinks their cause is important, and they usually are, but right answers are complicated, and I just feel like CinemaWins video had some oversimplified and contradictory messages, and I hope this video will sincerely add to the discussion and make it more realistic and nuanced. A video essay that covers why black lives matter is controversial. Specifically, black lives matter is semantic overload – people use the same phrase to both represent an idea and the BLM organization. We have many assumptions about racism against the black community here in the US, but we agree on a lot, and just have different ideas of why things are the way they are. Because we all have different ideas about racism, is it a surprise that we ask why don’t people agree that black lives matter? The organization Black Lives Matter is controversial, and there are many people who agree with the statement that black lives matter, but understandably don’t want to be associated with or confused for the BLM’s actions. So can we all please stop pretending like there is a significant portion of the population that thinks that black lives don’t matter, or that there is a large group of people who think there was nothing wrong with what happened to George Floyd? A mini video essay about how Gaston wasn’t a bad guy. Kind of, specifically how the mob was right and morally justified in Beauty of the Beast. The morality of mobs is hard to pin down, but after taking a closer look with me, I think you might agree with that conclusion if you consider the villagers point of view and circumstances. The snowflake doesn’t blame itself for the avalanche, and mobs are destructive, so how responsible are the members of the mob for all that went down? A video discussing the meaning of dog-whistle politics, and why I think reading political double talk can easily lead to increased divisiveness. I don’t like attributing racist dog whistles to others because it tends to just turn into racist accusations and the boy who cried racist. There are definitely people who disguise racists things in double talk, but I would also say that some people read racism into everything they hear. I just think if people stopped assuming bad intentions and dog whistles from others less people would get burned at the stake, and we could have far more useful and meaningful dialogue in the realm of politics. A video on hipsters, millennials, and a girl with a love for goats. The idea is that I think hipsters have faded from public perception and are now lumped into the millennial tent, which I can understand, but I think is a little silly. I also think hipsters hate mainstream, but they went mainstream, so that’s a little ironic. Ultimately, I feel like hipsters try to be unique, but in flaunting their unique hobbies, they end up as part of a stereotype, rather than a unique individual. And the people who are truly interesting and unique don’t need to flaunt it, because they are happy with who they are and what they like. The second episode of Divisive Definitions: Political Vocabulary Defined. This episode covers the terms ‘your truth’, ‘believe all women’, ‘Latinx’, and ‘hate speech’. A response video to Rhett and Link’s Spiritual Deconstruction podcasts they did on Ear Biscuits. Rhett and Link are famous youtubers, probably most famous for their show called Good Mythical Morning, and previously they were fairly forward with their faith, but recently on their podcast they did a deconstruction on their faith. They invited others to tell their story, so here is mine. I talk about faith in Christ and belief in God, and then go through examples of things Rhett and Link said that I’ve also heard other people who have left their faith say. A response video to Knowing Better’s Manufacturing a Better Foot: Running Shoes. In his video, Knowing Better says that running is the most egalitarian sport when it comes to the sexes, but the fact still is that men run faster. I verified that men are faster runners of both marathons and ultramarathons, but I ended up doing research to find the most egalitarian sports. I think it is really cool to find that there are physical sports that are truly egalitarian where men and women compete, I was just disappointed to be sold on distancing running being among those sports when it’s not. Bias can blindside you, especially if it’s your own. In this video I discuss bias in news sources and use Vox (and Carlos Maza) as an example of obvious bias blindness. I pull on a video from Viva Frei on the difference between opinion and bias, and then explore Allsides.com. Allsides breaks down news sources by bias, and I highlight popular news sources and where they fall on the bias chart. Just because someone is biased doesn’t mean they can’t be trusted, it just means you need to take things they say with a grain of salt. Or a heaping spoonful, in some cases. A response to the change.org petition that condemns the greeting families of missionaries returning home from the Philippines at the Salt Lake City Airport. What it comes down it, people make bad choices when they’re mad or scared or stressed. Should they have gathered and greeted their family like they did? No, it wasn’t very safe. But also, who can blame families for bending the rules a bit because they were anxious to see a child return home safely after so much time apart and so much uncertainty and worry? As usual, it’s complicated, and there’s two sides to every story. A response video to Pop Culture Detective on the subject of the prevalence of combat mechanics in video games. Contrary to the original video, I think combat mechanics work well for the medium of video games: there is large variety in genres and applications of combat mechanics – they are everywhere, and they are fun! A short argument against the term, “people of color”. A breakdown of the ethnic demographics of the US is given, and a look at who qualifies as a “person of color” (as far as I understand). A look into the November and December Democratic Presidential debates, and in specific, a response Andrew Yang gave to a question of being the only person of color on the stage. Ultimately, I think the term is overinclusive and limits the world to a literal black and white point of view. Yes movies are art, and art can be interpreted however you want, so maybe the whole pirates series has a rich queer subtext and that line was referring to Jack’s sexual orientation. A response video to Shaun on the free speech debate. At the end of a video on racism, Shaun makes an off handed argument for censorship to people who say hateful things. This doesn't make any sense for me, because as Andrew Klavan has said, 'There is only free speech, and speech allowed by the powerful'. Individuals and companies definitely have the rights to ban or not listen to those whom they chose, but free speech is hard on the feelings - free speech for only those who you agree with isn't actually free speech.
