There is an amazing piece of secretive history nestled in the Quehanna Wilderness part of Appalachia that runs through North Central Pennsylvania. Well worth a trip to see! Today we took our 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ to visit some old nuclear relics from days gone by. The United States Air Force wanted to produce Nuclear Powered Aircraft and looked for an ideal place to experiment. The area now called the “Quehanna Wilderness” was the area selected and they acquired 80 square miles for the project. They build several sites to test the engines, and they built two bunkers strong enough to survive a nuclear blast if needed! These relics remain to this day! We have driven past the sign for Kunes Camp many times, but never went down to see what was there; WE WERE AMAZED! Today we took our 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ to visit and old hunting camp that was built around 1900. The camp was built on State Land; then in 1955 Curtis Wright, a company that was at the forefront of Naval Aviation, purchased 80 square miles of State Land, and was contracted to explore the development of nuclear aircraft. Anyone who had camps in the area were ordered to vacate the property; thus, the Kunes Hunting Camp has been sitting vacant all these years! The entrance to the camp trailhead is located off the Quehanna Highway; here are the coordinates (41.216500, -78.172600) The walk down to the camp ruins is about a mile, and well worth the walk!
