Down with Skool
Down with Skool! & How to Be Topp
Nigel Molesworth is a fictional character, the supposed author of a series of books about life in an English prep school named St Custard's. The books were written by Geoffrey Willans, with cartoon illustrations by Ronald Searle.
Molesworth is arguably one of the funniest comic creations in British literature. A superbly satirical chronicler of 1950s England, he influenced a generation with his anarchic take on life.
These wonderfully entertaining recordings show the self-proclaimed ‘curse of St Custard’s’, at his very best. Down with Skool! & How to Be Topp are based on the first two Molesworth books and are performed by Griff Rhys Jones. Molesworth gives us the lowdown on the Head Beak, masters, bullies and lessons - and offers his inimitable advice for tiny pupils on how to survive the first term …
Based on the books by Geoffrey Willans
Abridged by Wendy Cope
Performed by Griff Rhys Jones
Produced by Susan Roberts
First broadcast BBC Radio 4 in August 1991

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times".
Charles Dickens story tells of the redemptive powers of love in the face of cruelty, violence and neglect. Written and published in weekly instalments in 1859, it's set in London and Paris before and during the violence of the French Revolution.
The story follows several characters through these events, notably Charles Darnay, a French former aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution, and Sydney Carton, a dissipated English barrister who tries to redeem his ill-spent life out of love for Darnay's wife, Lucie Manette.
The events span eight years, the plot builds powerfully from the moment the story opens, with the coded rumours of Dr Manette being 'restored to life' and Dickens brilliantly orchestrates the wider political picture behind the story of Lucie, Darnay and Carton.

Black Butterflies by Priscilla Morris
A story of domestic family life upended and fractured by inconceivable events which seem, even now, both far away and close at hand. The story begins in the spring of 1992 in the city of Sarajevo, as political tensions are mounting and barricades begin to appear in the streets.
Fifty-five year old Zora is married to Franjo, who is fifteen years older than her. Her daughter lives in Wiltshire, England. Zora’s vocation is her work as an artist, notably a painter of landscapes and the bridges that span the river of her beloved Sarajevo. She teaches art students, but in the afternoons retreats to her studio high in the eaves of the city’s magnificent public library to work on her canvases.
When violence finally spills over, Zora sends her husband and elderly mother to safety in England to stay with her daughter. Reluctant to believe that hostilities will last more than a few weeks, she stays behind to paint and teach while the city falls under siege.
War does not come suddenly: it creeps. Familiar daily life collapses slowly by degrees - first the phone is cut off, then the electricity and finally the water. As the assault deepens and everything they love is laid to waste, black ashes floating over the rooftops, Zora and her friends are forced to rebuild themselves, over and over. Theirs is a breath-taking story of disintegration, resilience and hope.
Written by Priscilla Morris
Read by Fenella Woolgar
Abridged and Produced by Jill Waters
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March 2024
Priscilla Morris is of Yugoslav and Cornish parentage, she grew up in London and spent her summers in Sarajevo. Black Butterflies is her first novel and was shortlisted for the 2023 Women’s Prize for Fiction.

The Laxian Key by Chris Larner and David Gilbert
Stephen Hawking once warned us that our species could soon be wiped out by plagues, asteroids and our tendency to destroy ourselves. The solution, he suggested, was for us to colonise other planets. But Chris Larner and David Gilbert's sci-fi comedy drama sees the truth as being a little more complicated.
Set in the year 2150, Arnold and Gregor work as planetary decontaminators via their own firm, AAA Ace Eco-Friendly Interplanetary Decontamination. Their job is to clean up polluted planets to make them habitable for humans. One such place is Planet Party, where several space tourists have died when landing there. With a big cash award given to anyone who can clean it up, it looks like Arnold and Gregor might do the deadly job.
However, they soon get side-tracked by an alien music box they buy cheap from Joe the Interstellar Junkman which discharges a strangle liquid that dissolves anything it touches. It’s not long before the 87th floor of a skyscraper in Streatham starts to melt, followed by London, and ultimately the entire Earth.
According to the song in the music box, the only thing that can stop the melting is something called "The Laxian Key".

Jane Eyre (1962) Saturday Night Theatre
Jane Eyre is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë, published under the pen name "Currer Bell", on 16 October 1847, by Smith, Elder & Co. of London. The first American edition was published the following year by Harper & Brothers of New York. Jane Eyre is a Bildungsroman which follows the experiences of its eponymous heroine, including her growth to adulthood and her love for Mr. Rochester, the brooding master of Thornfield Hall.
The novel revolutionised prose fiction by being the first to focus on its protagonist's moral and spiritual development through an intimate first-person narrative, where actions and events are coloured by a psychological intensity. Charlotte Brontë has been called the "first historian of the private consciousness", and the literary ancestor of writers like Proust and Joyce.
The book contains elements of social criticism with a strong sense of Christian morality at its core, and it is considered by many to be ahead of its time because of Jane's individualistic character and how the novel approaches the topics of class, sexuality, religion, and feminism. It, along with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, is one of the most famous romance novels of all time

When their friend Keith Brandon is charged with murdering a policeman, Gemma, Liam and Andy decide to bunk off school and go to his trial. Although Keith had a knife, a motive and has confessed to the crime, they're sure he didn't do it - so when he's found guilty, they can't believe it.
Determined to prove Keith's innocence, they take their story to the local media, but no-one will take them seriously. Then Gemma comes up with an unorthodox way of appealing for new evidence: setting up their own pirate radio station...
But someone's trying to warn them off. First they receive a letter telling them to 'stop looking', then Andy's mum - a police officer - is suspended from the force. Unafraid, they keep broadcasting - only to uncover sinister surprises and dangerous secrets.
Can they find out the truth about PC Johnson's death, before they're shut down for good?

Six Suspects By Vikas Swarup
Seven years ago, Vivek - Vicky - Rai, the playboy son of the Home Minister of Uttar Pradesh, murdered bartender Ruby Gill at a trendy restaurant in New Delhi, simply because she refused to serve him a drink.
Now Vicky Rai has been killed at the party he was throwing to celebrate his acquittal. The police recover six guests with guns in their possession: a corrupt bureaucrat who claims to have become Mahatma Gandhi overnight; an American tourist infatuated with an Indian actress; a stone-age tribesman on a quest to recover a sacred stone; a Bollywood sex-symbol with a guilty secret; a mobile-phone thief who dreams big; and an ambitious politician prepared to stoop low.
Swarup unravels the lives and motives of the six suspects, offering both a riveting page-turner and an insightful peek into the heart of contemporary India. Audaciously and astutely plotted, with a panoramic imaginative sweep, Six Suspects is the work of a master storyteller.
From Vikas Swarup, the author of the international bestseller Slumdog Millionaire comes a richly-textured tale of murder, corruption, and opportunity.

Luther By John Osborne
Luther
A psychological study of the religious reformer Martin Luther, who is portrayed as an angry man struggling with self-doubts and his desire to believe. With the Pope using the sale of indulgences to fund his own obsessions and works, Luther had begun to see the church as corrupt. Luther reputedly hammered his 95 theses on the door of All Saints Church, Wittenberg - starting what became known as the Reformation. He was excommunicated in 1521.

Dombey And Son by Charles Dickens
Paul Dombey is the owner of Dombey and Son, a successful shipping company. The wealthy business owner dreams of having a son to take over the family business one day. He neglects his first child, a girl, because she is not the boy for whom he had hoped.
Dombey’s wife dies shortly after giving birth to his namesake son. This leaves both his newborn son and his six-year-old daughter, Florence, motherless. Dombey hires Mrs. Richards, whose nickname is Toodle, to serve as a wet nurse to Little Paul.
Little Paul Dombey grows into a frail child who is often sick. For his health, his father sends him to the seaside city of Brighton, which does him good. Little Dombey receives an intense education in Brighton at Dr. and Mrs. Blimber’s school. At school, he becomes friends with schoolmate Mr. Toots. Alas, Little Dombey’s health gets worse, and he dies at the mere age of six years old.
