You probably know the classic 1983 Al Pacino, Oliver Stone, and Brian De Palma Miami Gangster classic of the same name, but not many have seen the classic prohibition era take. From Howard Hughes and Directed by Howard Hawks. Staring Paul Muni with Ann Dvorak, Osgood Perkins, and Boris Karloff. We go back in time, almost a hundred years to a pre Hayes Code era film of action packed violence, scenery chewing acting, and a solid story that always holds up fine. We are going back to good ole 1978 to check out, for the first time strangely enough. The Hanna Barbera made for NBC TV film, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park on a Vintage Cinema Review show. I'm joined with my good pal, Buddy Corley as we sit outside in the mountains on a nice warm summer day to discuss this epic film. Something that we have talked about doing for a good long while and a movie we both had yet to actually see, even though we are huge Kiss fans for many years. Fun times were had in a classic watch, then review old school podcast. Seeing the nostalgic look of the Six Flags Magic Mountain Theme Park. Which has always been a big deal for us in California and I believe with many other states. That was the whole cross country journey location for Walley World in National Lampoon's Vacation. Here you get an awesome old school 70s Kiss concert in the park. Interesting song choices, hilarious dialogue, and a much different main villain than expected from the title. It's not a great movie by any means, but it is still fun, goofy, and something of rock and roll history to be experienced for sure. Dazed and Confused, the all time classic hang out picture that just makes you want to be there on that end of school, start of summer vacation night. It's like the 70s version of American Graffiti and filled with probably one of the top tier soundtracks of all time. I know I watched the living daylights out of this movie in the past, especially during my high school years. Richard Linklater the director and writer captures the magic of that pocket era that is still relatable to this day, even if it is now almost a half century back. Weird to think about it that way. This film also introduced tons of later day big stars, like Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Milla Jovovich, and Parker Posey to name a few. Talking all about the classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller, action, comedy film, North By Northwest of 1959. Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, and Jessie Royce Landis. A spy thriller of a mistaken identity and a continual chase across the country. With all sorts of fantastic locations, dazzling special effects, and quite a bit of witty comedy to boot. This is the film that inspired the way James Bond 007 movies would emulate, starting with Dr. No and From Russia With Love. You can totally see that here in the North By Northwest. It also reminds me a lot of a pre Coen Brothers style too with a normal character being thrown into extreme situations. We are going way back in time, to good ole 1935, and reviewing one of the greatest swashbuckling pirate flicks of all time. Captain Blood! With Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland in their first major cinema roles. Plus, the great Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes and the Sheriff of Nottingham) collides with Errol Flynn in a marvelous sword fight on the beach. Directed too by Michael Curtiz of Casablanca, to name a small film. You just don't get that same kind of high adventure glory these days. And if you think that the 1930s of cinema may be a little archaic, well you just need to dive back in time and find out how sophisticated and dialed in the motion picture industry was at this point. They don't call it the golden age of cinema for nothing. Fantastic sets, battling miniature Manowar ships, stunts galore, artistic cinematography, solid pacing, and acting to just put a smile on your face. Batman The Adventures Continue Season 1 Graphic Novel is the Animated Series continuation from original TV writers Paul Dini and Alan Burnett. Bringing together pretty much a season 5 but in comic book form with never used in the show characters and returning classics too. What makes this work so well compared to other series later days stories is by still having the original guys write the script. So the story never has that uncanny fan fiction feel to it that just makes some other classic shows just feel off in comic book form. All 8 of these issues are really something special and pair up nicely with some of the top tier episodes of the 90s cartoon show. Bringing in new characters that never appeared in the original show like Deathstroke and Red Hood Jason Todd. Then also creating some brand new ones too that just feel like they fit in perfectly. Plus of course all sorts of returning villains that one might and might not expect. Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Mad Hater, Scarface, Clayface, Lex Luthor, Killer Croc, Penguin, Firefly, and Clock King just to name a few. There's just so much going on in here that it almost needs a good 2 reads to catch all the well dialed in references. Catch back up with Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennywise, Barbara Gordon, Clark Kent, and Tim Drake (Oddly Dick Grayson is missing but there is two other graphic novels in the series) with us in this perfect example of nostalgia done right. We are talking all about the latest X-Men cartoon up on Disney Plus. X-Men '97, a continuation of the 1992 animated series of what I would call the greatest generation of all time for animated series. Batman, Spider-man, Dragon Ball Z, Swat Kats, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pirates of Dark Water, The Simpsons, and X-Men just to name a few of the glorious shows from that early 90s era. Stories and animation were firing on all cylinders, making programing that appealed to a large audience beyond just kids. X-Men 1992 was such a huge deal to me as a kid, as it has been throughout my entire life. So, going into this new version is always going to be an interesting ride. All in all, they do a pretty good job here. With only a little bit of cluster in the certain section of the episodes. Mainly just jamming in too much but never anything that would be considered poor quality. This could be the new era turn around for the Marvel Disney world. If you ever get some nagging injuries in your shoulders, wrists, or elbow joints from straight bar pull ups. Or also from other repetitive motions like utilizing the keyboard and mouse or even driving too much. A great way to ease any pain from the workouts and still keep on your pull ups, is to change to a ergonomic style grip for a while. Let the body take it's sweet time in healing up and continue your pull progress. Then, when the time is right, you can return to the standard straight bar pull ups if you would like. Want to balance out your wrists, forearms, and fingers from all that gym oriented grip work? Well, add in the ever classic push up to your regime or maybe the hand stand press if you are feeling ballsy. You don't even have to go that far. A good plank hold or yoga moves like downward and upward dog can do the trick too. The whole idea is just to make sure you work the opposite of all the grip type work going on in life. I've had some wrist issues throughout time and a good balance of work has really helped out. Let me know how your workouts have treated you and until next time, train hard in Midgard! I love me some good ole walker dips and I go through the whole experience of using one of these medical grade devices in your next calisthenics workout. It's a cheap to free way to get yourself a home dip machine and I would say I enjoy dips off of a walker more than most other applications. It's portable, safe, and ultra practical. Combine it all with some pull ups and you can have a beyond solid upper body workout experience. Don't mind the rain and wind here. Seems it just had to hassle me a bit till I was close to finishing. But let me know your experiences with using one of these walkers. Or if you are curious about giving one a go. Just in the mail from all the way down under, the Super Mario Bros 1993 Glorious 4K Blu Ray box set. With not only a new, first time 4K transfer of the classic film, but special features galore. Including behind the scenes books, the original scripts (which are amazing to take a look at by the way, we talked about them before on the podcast), and a whole ton more. Talking all about the original Star Fox Comic/Manga series from the old Nintendo Power issues of 45 - 55 and having a grand ole time with the material. This Star Fox run is going just off the first game and adds in a feel of the Heavy Metal movie on top of it. I hear some Cheap Trick and Sammy Haggar playing over the read. On our big 500th episode we decided to go back in time with the 1st draft script of The Last Action Hero. on one of our Unproduced Scripts segments. Unproduced as in, the version before Arnold Schwarzenegger was even attached. This script came out in 1991 by Zak Pakk and Adam Leff also before Shane Black came in to put his groove on the storyline. Now we love the Arnie 1993 take we got best but this original draft is a very interesting, alternative take on the whole concept. Which to me, Last Action Hero has the best concept of any story out there. I mean, who would not want to go into their favorite movie, tv show, cartoon, video game, and so on now? This episode is an audio only one. This script keeps the core concept of Danny getting sucked into an action flick but beyond that it starts going in different paths, with alternate type characters, locations, and leading into a completely different 3rd act where the story goes almost twilight zone like. Plus there's material in here that would be tough for any studio to get behind and not feel a responsibility problem in the near future. Playing out almost like it was a PG-13 Roger Corman or Tromaville film. Very interesting stuff here. So come on by and join us for the good times as we go through the entire script. Relive a classic in a different stroke. Last Action Hero was a action flick way ahead of it's time, easily lost over by Jurassic Park at the time but finding it's audience in the Danny aged target demographic. And funny enough, nowadays you see knock offs of this style. Other great flicks like Forbidden Kingdom, Ready Player One and even Tropic Thunder. And LAH is never a bad concept to knock off now too.
