The US homeland ballistic missile defense architecture centers on the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system, or GMD for short. It is designed to protect all 50 states from a limited long-range ballistic missile attack. Remember when I was talking about how, broadly speaking, these defense systems work by tracking, then destroying before impact? Well, broadly speaking, the GMD works like that: after detecting a missile launch, GMD’s sensors feed the data into a central control system, which then launches one or more interceptor missiles, which in turn, fly into the path of the incoming missile, release a kill vehicle and destroy the attacker’s missile on impact. But as I said, this is broadly speaking, very broadly. In truth, the GMD is a global system with 11 elements that span 15 time zones, and each element has to be precisely coordinated. And if something fails, everything can go wrong. The M2020 was first unveiled in October of 2020, during a military parade celebrating the 75th anniversary of the North Korean Communist Workers’ Party. A total of nine drove down the main avenue during the parade, sporting what looked like modern optics, armor plating, and even active protection systems. The prototype tanks were shown off along with their new rocket systems, and a mobile gun system that’s definitely not a stryker at all. But based on current information and looking at the rest of the DPRK’s tank fleet, we have a good idea of where the tank is at in production, and what its rough capabilities are. One of the first things you’ll notice about the M2020 is just how visually distinct it is compared to what North Korea has shown off in the past. Historically the country has used a derivative of Russian T-62 tank designs. Trade embargos on the country, especially in the realm of military equipment have largely prevented North Korea from obtaining modern tank technology. The tanks we do see are generally frankensteined designs incorporating a base model T-62 design, with various overlapping additions from other tanks like T-72s and Type 88s as they’ve managed to get pieces of them. Currently North Korea fields three designs, the Chonma-ho, the Pokpung-ho, and Songun-915, the latter of which was equipped with a standard 125mm smoothbore cannon. Typically with each newer iteration of North Korean tank, a few incremental upgrades are all that are done with each, but the M2020 quickly broke this trend. On the surface the new tank looks like a rough combination of an M1 Abrams, the T-14 Armata, and Chinese VT-4 in some areas. This has led to some speculation that China or Russia provided some level of assistance in designing the tank, which would fall in line with trends of greater cooperation between North Korea and the other two countries. This comparison to Western tanks was highlighted with its choice of desert camo, which by all accounts is useless in the Korean peninsula, but similar to a majority of modern tanks it would be based on. The latest images of the M2020 post 2023 and into 2024 now show them sporting a darker greener look, which is more suited to North Korea’s geography. Additionally with the new paint came the addition of explosive reactive armor bricks on the turret, and what appears to be T-14-like ERA plating on the side, which was absent in the initial introduction in 2020. They’ve pulled off hundreds of air strikes into Syria and Iraq many of them unilateral and some of them in partnership with the US led coalition against ISIS. This map from airwars.org shows us a view of where the casualties are from these strikes. These attacks have a dual mission, the first was to destroy ISIS and the second was to target Kurdish forces. With this comes the risk of return fire because one of their 3rd generation F-4 phantom jets was shot down by the Syrian air force. 3 years later a 4th generation Turkish F-16 shot down a Russian Su-24M near their border with Syria that they claimed had violated their air space. In 2023 alone the Turkish air force executed 128 air strikes inside northern Syria. So Considering how active their air force is in the feild it’s clear why from a combat tactical point of view it’s important. We’ll also dive into why it’s important on a political and operational level too later. Safe to say there is a lot riding on the program. To safely deliver ordnance in the modern world that’s lousy with anit-air defense, you need a 5th generation aircraft. In the realm of military aviation, Turkey’s emergence as a player in indigenous fighter jet development has garnered significant international attention. Headlines covering the Kaan’s maiden flight included words and expressions like “impressive,” “history-shattering”, “a pivotal point”, and “a new titan takes into the skies”. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) designed the Kaan to reach all modern fighter performance benchmarks which includes: a maximum speed of Mach 1.8 to 2.2, a service ceiling of 55,000 ft, a range of 700 miles on internal fuel, and a tolerance for maneuvers exerting up to 9 Gs. What makes a fighter 5th gen as opposed to 4th gen? Low radar visibility, high agility and the ability to conduct network centric warfare. So far, only three countries have successfully developed a fifth-generation fighter: Russia, China and the US. Among them, only China and the US have managed to manufacture the fighters in significant numbers. So if Turkey becomes the fourth nation to develop a fifth-generation fighter, that’s no small feat.
