The two tanks dates back to the Dakar Rally days, the tanks for the bikes were made by hand out of aluminum, 2 separate halves, for the simple reason that if one gets punctured (in a fall & starts leaking for example) the other tank was still good and the rider could continue the race. This is why there are two caps, the tanks are not connected. Both bikes hit the street with a massive difference in volume and type of road noise. Same route, speed, gear, conditions. Both bikes are past their "break-in" period & have around 2k to 4k on the odometer. Adventure bikes are primarily driven on the street, for most ADV bikes it's more than 80/20%, this bike is primarily for off-road but you'll still have to do some street riding to get to those off-road places, this video shows you how it is on the street. BMW changed 2 things with the engine in the new 1300GS, moved the transmission forward and under the engine and made the engine walls thinner to save on weight. But did this change make the noise getting to the rider more noticeable and can we measure this noise? BMW say it reduces the amount of dirt/mud/water from getting up underneath the bike by managing water back out the bottom of the mudguard. Let's test it and see what we can find out.
